I tried to get my generally non-anime-watching wife interested in Dungeon Meshi by watching the English dub, but she bounced hard off Emily Rudd's Marcille. And I see her point. :( Rudd's a decent actor but her line reads here are super flat. Marcille should be ... more, somehow.

Also Senshi just sounds like Sungwon Cho's gruff voice, which is distracting in its own way.

I like Rudd's Marcille because it's a kind of voice you don't often hear in dubs and I appreciate that.

Sungwon Cho using a character voice archetype for a character archetype, say it ain't so.

It's hard to express in words but there's an, I dunno, "roundness" to her voice that I like? It's not trying impersonate the original VA the way that something like Kari Wahlgren's Haruko from the FLCL dub sounds note for note identical to the original.

I dunno, there's a certain type standard of voice that I tend to associate with anime dubbing.

Braven ep1
drat, the destruction on the base was really well done.
godamn, ID4 energy shields. We really need to find a way to counter these before they attack us for real, we're always screwed against energy shields.

Braven ep2

"Some trick the americans are playing, who but them could build something like this?"

what? its so unamerican in everyway! What is this girl thinking.
Meanwhile, Isami having some fun with water.

Isami and me. Chapter 1. rofl.
The gay jokes innuendo aside, I do wonder why the hell he knew his name in the first place.

lol @ when they're trying to talk to Braven, and mid-sentence he just form changes to plane mode and flies off. German girl is great.

Isami, get into the robot!

Braven ep3

aww yea. Mysterious alien girl found on beach.
granted, Isami was just in a grueling experience of the first robot sequence, then followed by intense torture, and then right into the 2nd robot sequence, but he sure is acting wimpy compared to his confident self in the first episode half. I want confident Isami again.

The girl who was Isami's radio support is funny.
The American and alien girl getting off to a good start, may they join together just like Isami and Braven.

It's certainly kinda rote and at least from the first episode, the anime doesn't enhance it unless you want to see the anime boobs animated. It didn't even really lean into its harem premise until relatively recently.

Yeah it's not really adding anything to the manga besides a special effect every time the MC kills somebody (which makes it clearer he's using his death ability but is unnecessary) and the guardian spirit is somehow more annoying in motion than in text so I'm probably going to drop it too.

His instant death ability operates without sound, trace, or action. Viewed from a threat projection viewpoint it's really kind of a problem! Manga-current spoilers follow: the protagonist is actually the universe's garbage collection routine, who for some paranormal reason incarnated in human shape, and spent most of his formative years learning how to be human at the local equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Control. He would just like to go back, please, and cannot understand why nobody believes that they will die when he kills them in the least dramatic manner possible.

They could have had fun with the effect a little, start it off as a static flash, eventually graduate to full screamer frames of a distorted scene with him painted over with a sucking void or an infinity of bodiless eyes, maybe stills of the dimly lit mantra-covered containment hallways back at the FBC. This doesn't strike me as a production team that's interested in that kind of departure from source, though, since the actual reveal of what he is gets delayed for a bit to build reader interest.

The fun of Instant Death is watching a series of grandiose fantasy plots ping-pong off of each other for a bit before getting anticlimacticly dumpstered by a sleepy main character. It's a fun comic, generally. The anime is... fine? It's fine. It's a pretty flat adaptation that doesn't bring a ton to the table compared to the comic itself. I'll probably keep watching it, myself, just to see how it pans out.

the cooking in dungeon meshi is the initial gimmick but it pretty quickly becomes more of a general fantasy adventure dungeon delving story. the cooking angle is used as a thematic beat to make a general point about human desire.
