I've been thinking about trying to find common ground on the ai art thing as we've established you can't entirely cream the genie back in his box. What about if we made it so the ai had to physically produce the artwork? Like it had to use those old primary school turtles with paint brushes shoved up them? Or just leave it up to it to highjack whatever means of physical production it could find I guess and get creative (which I believe it capable of) as to what that might be. That removes the worry about things happening too quickly and proliferating. I mean in theory the ai can still paint faster than a human. I think there's a scene in short circuit where Johnny 5 does this. But also the ai never sleeps. But it does level the playing field a little.

Generative AI dislikers can take heart in the fact that the current technology is a dead end. To badly approximate one thing that humans can do - forming coherent sentences - requires the cutting edge models to "read" an appreciable portion of the entire English language corpus. Humans can learn to do the same task, alongside a thousand others, from a tiny fraction of the examples. You can make similar arguments based on the power consumption and processing requirements of training these systems compared to the kilo of meat running on 20W that humans use, but I think the difference in learning methods - absorbing the entire Internet vs following along the Ladybird Read It Yourself series - is the strongest evidence that the current approach is doomed.

You make it a legal requirement for anything fed into an AI to have permission and attribution, that's literally all we need right at this exact moment. Anyone feeding their own work in is covered, people can easily contribute their own work to a specific AI, and the general use models that scraped the entire internet then started poisoning everything with garbage immediately die.

Also really bothers me how this holiday only explicitly mentions the Jews killed, as if the millions of other victims don’t count. I hate that in this current political climate it feels as if you have to be skeptical of every invocation of the Holocaust, because a hell of a lot of them are made in bad faith.

I've never smoked so I don't have the compulsion to puff away on a vape but someone introduced me to nicotine pouches a couple years back and gently caress me I am absolutely addicted to Velos. Not sure how harmful nicotine by itself is. I know cigs are bad for obvious reasons and vapes are also (less) bad because popcorn lung but the purely synthetic zero tobacco oral stuff? No idea. Mouth cancer risk maybe? Cardiovascular effects? I have no clue and the internet seems unsure too, which makes sense given how recently they've appeared and the lack of data. They're sure morish though which I assume means they can't be great for you.

I figure if I make it to my 80s I might as well take up cigar smoking because I'll not exactly be dying young at that point.

The pouches can give you the ol’ mouth and throat cancer if I remember right. They’re nice like Thought 8 pints deep on a Saturday evening nothings better than sucking down a Marlboro red

I'd have the odd cheeky cig when I was being cool and drunk in my 20s, now the idea makes me feel mouth-sick. Gross habit and you should feel bad about it imo

Like, i get it, my folks had to paint the living room walls every few years as they'd get discoloured from smoking but it does seem cruel folk can't smoke in their home anymore

Gross habit and you should feel bad about it imo Be careful of cheeky smokes! In my twenties I probably puffed on about 10 cigs in 10 years. My non-smoker boyfriend and I used to buy a packet of 10, try and smoke (to look 'cool' I guess), didn't inhale, had a coughing fit every time. So that is the sum total of my smoking. Went to get holiday travel insurance about 3 years ago using a "specialist" given my ongoing leg problem, quizzed about all the various smoking, drinking etc so told the guy exactly what I just wrote here. Given that I am now in my 60s, and haven't even attempted to smoke since my 20s and barely did then, they have me down as an "ex-smoker". I mean, yes, technically, but makes my premium bigger. So just a bit of an experiment in my 20s affects me financially in my 60s. "Everyone" says "why did you bother telling them?" Well because insurance cos will do anything to wriggle out of paying so I don't want them not paying out a claim for 2 weeks in hospital with a broken leg on the basis that 40 years ago I half-smoked 10 cigs.

That does seem like the sort of thing you should just lie about as I don't imagine the insurance companies have deep cover agents taking incriminating photos of you 40 years ago smoking.

I would suggest that marrying an old tory is an indicator of already being a raging arsehole but it probably also exacerbates the condition. No idea about devon specifically.

Yeah I’ve seen perfectly nice people who don’t really care about politics get with tories who do and very rapidly become awful little hitlers. They usually end up worse than the person that influenced them I’m sorry to say. Good luck with your mum and her arsehole hubby
