The entire Mazda line of cars in that era looked pretty good. My parents had a beat-to-hell $500 BD that lasted far longer than it should have. Totaled after a parking lot fender-bender, due to rust, after three years and 20,000 miles of mostly trouble free duty. The heater never worked, the tail lights worked half the time, and it dropped fourth gear after one year. If you could stand the cold, the dark, and the noise, it worked perfectly fine. For $500. My dad figured that the previous owners so hated how it looked that the thing was a winter beater from new.

I hard-quit Animorphs with the first mention of someone named 'Tobias'. Every Tobias in my childhood was the most weird rear end in a top hat ever. And he would bite you.

Was the Mustang 2 actually worse than the other malaise era pony cars? The biggest flaw with the Mustang 2 is mistaking the auto trader listings for a fahv hunert horsepowah first gen mustang before realizing the disappointing net horsepower numbers.

no, it's mostly a people being pissed off that a malaise car got the mustang name and a bit of the "New Coke" thing too. the chassis and suspension were actually pretty good and the front suspension components frequently got stolen later in life and used in race cars. it's why you never saw them even fairly quickly after they were phased out

I'm still waiting for NHTSA crash-test results for the Cyberfuck. All I've seen is the in-house crash test that was terrible.

Isn't it a certain volume of cars sold for a full NHTSA test series? I've never seen a Pagani crash test, and I don't think they'd do super well, with them being so low and light

I would agree with the "New Coke" argument if they had done something significant like changed it to a front wheel drive car or added a lot more seating/weight etc. The Mach-E shouldn't have the Mustang name because it's part SUV, but is there much else different about a Mustang 2 besides horsepower ratings? Regarding the front suspension, isn't it the same suspension used on the Ford Pinto? Similarly, correct me if I am wrong, but the Pinto could have a been just as safe as any other malaise era compact car if Ford bean counters had not decided that settling lawsuits was slightly cheaper than the fixing the design flaw.

Yes. And if it's found out later that it didn't actually pass, every single one will have to be recalled and fixed. There's a pretty good incentive to be honest about it.

The NHTSA does not have the budget or resources to do all the testing themselves.

They started with a pinto and then replaced everything but the trunk floor pan for the mustang II apparently. I don't believe that entirely but apparently it only shared the trunk floor pan by the time they were done with the design.

I definitely remember seeing a poo poo load more rusted out 70s era Camaros and fewer but still more Firebirds and Transams back in the 80s and early 90s than I did Mustang IIs, but I figure at least part of that was they only sold those Mustangs for 4 or 5 model years vs the entire decade for the F bodies. In fact, I don't think I ever remember seeing a Mustang II back then until I saw the guy from Degrassi had one, that might be when I started noticing them. But like 3 out of 5 freakers in the 80s and early 90s seemed to have a poo poo era Camaro jacked up in the back, with rusted out rocker panels and a hole in the exhaust.

And traction bars. They all had traction bars. Don't know if that was a factory thing, but if it wasn't they all had them.

the main thing, at least for me, is that it's ugly as poo poo. compare to a late 2nd gen f-body, for example. while they're not pretty, they still look like camaros and firebirds. the mustangii is wonky but not in a charming way.

some might say it's because they tried shrinking it and modernizing the chassis, but imo that's orthogonal to the styling choices. for an example of how to do it right, near and dear to my heart, look at a 79 AMX (spirit) vs a 71-74 AMX (javelin). basically a whole new car wearing the name-badge of the previous champ, and smaller and 80s-ier to boot, just like the mustangii. but critically, it doesnt have a bunch of unnecessary body lines all over the place, or a terrible grille/bumper situation up front.

e: just realized that my idea of "do[ing] it right" is basically the fox body. i guess they had to get the mustangii out of their system before they could design something halfway decent. or maybe the poor reception of the mustangii was the wake-up call to un-gently caress things with the fox?
