I think this has finally been the tipping point for me in breaking my annoying semi-interest in wrestling. It's like, I always wondered - why is it so boring and bad and stupid most of the time? and you think well it's full of right winger sleazebags but there are good people within the mix who are just trying to entertain despite that and now I feel like nah, there are simply zero good people involved in an entertainment form is which makes its money from people too young or stupid to realise that it's all not only fake, but gross. every major star is a complete poo poo and the people in charge of the company are basically evil, and anybody who doesn't seem poo poo we just don't know about OR is actually dumb/desperate enough to actually care about this, they're just another form of mark. I suppose I thought, maybe there's a way to clean up/elevate this stupid concept and it isn't just fundamentally bad, so it was a guilty pleasure at times, but now I think it's just fundamentally bad. And it's solidified a lesson I kinda learned with Louis CK and Rick and Morty where if there are huge blaring red flags getting mixed in with whatever the fun thing about the entertainment is, then something even more rotten is going to be underneath the things you are trying to ignore. So in the future when I see those, I won't overlook them. I'll just dip out.

Stunts like this always make me feel like WWE hasn't produced a proper star in like 20 years. Like, you have to rely on dragging these people out into the ring for some kind of hype because you have so little faith in your current roster/your current roster is genuinely that uninteresting? Really makes me wanna check out your show.

The bigger problem is that wwe kind does have newer stars with their audience, it's literally just they don't have any idea how to use them because the focus can only ever be on one person at a time. Like crowds love cody, lashley, McIntyre, KO, Sami, hell even Jey Uso and Gunther coming up, but everything has to be sacrificed to the throne of Roman while everything else is after thought. Even the women is the same only Rhea Ripley is used and no one cares about booking Bayley, Bianca, Becky or the other women's champ right

Cody Rhodes is a huge dork and lmao at getting owned by the rock. Rock was also brought back for one more match and beat Cena ten years ago. Then he came back for one more match again the next year to pass the torch to Cena at the tail end of Cena's full-time run. Then a couple years later he came back to squash the entire Wyatt Family, a very good and popular heel stable at the time. gently caress the rock.

IN A VACUUM, the sheer degree of memory holing that Vince will need, and Brock (and Hogan in retrospect), is not THEORETICALLY as extreme as the one Benoit suffered, for two reasons 1) As horrible and disgusting as Vince's crimes are, and Brock's, and everyone else's, rape and being debased and trafficked is something that one can recover from. You can't recover from being murdered. But mainly... 2) Benoit's crime was in many ways uniquely attributed to wrestling as a business and an existence; a man turned his brain into pudding doing stupid things like essentially faceplanting himself into hard floors and human bodies for decades and the damage finally ramped up so much that the man decided the best solution for his problems was to kill his whole family, then himself. Hogan made racist comments? There's racists everywhere. Vince is an absolute sex pest monster? His breed is also everywhere there are powerful men, it's not unique to wrestling. But Benoit's crime? It's indelibly tied to everything wrestling is, even in ways football and boxing, which can cause the same issues, isn't, because those are legit and people are actively trying to AVOID getting hit in the head. Hence, the sheer overwhelming effort to memory hole Benoit. His crime exposed the business' rotten guts, in a way the steroid trials never did, and that is, well...very bad for business. So they went super, ultra hard. Unlike Hogan, who eventually got 'forgiven', I doubt this will happen with Vince and co. I suspect it will be a case of 'we just will not promote them, and will place warnings at the start of anything that features them prominently'.
