I like that the album cover looks like a mid 90s Houston rap album

i can see why people would dig it, but it's not my style of metal at all. also jesus does he really need to flip off the camera *every* time he says "gently caress off" in a song where it's part of the title and he says it like 30 times?

I like synthwave a lot, but I can't stand The Midnight. Too saccharine, and I hate the wimpy vocals.

I know I'm a month late on year-end poo poo, but the last two months my playlist has been dominated by some really sick black metal from 2023. Lucifixion - Trisect Joys of Pierced Hearts Helleruin - Devils, Death and Dark Arts Anti-God Hand - Blight Year

I think I'm gonna retroactively amend my list and name Diamonds Hadder - Beyond the Breakers as my AOTY 2023. This dude has an absolutely fantastic, classic trad metal voice, and the music is loving inspired and grandiose in just the right way, and just has this... idk, authenticity? to it. One of the best trad metal albums I've heard in I dunno how many years. The guy's also giving it away for free on his website: https://www.diamondshadder.com/music ("Get Album" just above the top left corner of the cover picture). Oddly, it has a totally different track order than the version that's on Spotify. I guess this is the intended order and was changed for the streaming version for... reasons? I dunno. Either way, do yourselves a favour and check it out if you like epic trad.

Hannes Grossmann - Echoes of Eternity - tech death (former Necrophagist/Obscura drummer) Kaathe - Abyssal (Instrumental) - tech/prog/chiptune(?) - inst. rerelease of the 2023 banger Deathropy - Deathropy - Finnish melodeath Aldern - Concoction of Madness - progressive melodeath Voidfallen - Tread With The Ghosts melodeath + symphonic/prog elements Pursuit in Vanity - Give it Your Mind progressive melodeathcore one-man-band Vipassi - Lightless - progressive death These are the ones that grabbed my attention this week, but I haven't given any of them more than a cursory listen. I know somebody mentioned Vipassi upthread but I wanted to give them another shoutout because they're awesome and this album sounds like it fucks pretty hard.

Not enough for them to ditch their intolerable loving choruses, but still, Foregone is their least terrible output in like a decade and a half. Thank gently caress for these guys and Halo Effect, though.

Vintersorg posted:Sounds like Slayer. yeah this was apparently a leftover from the repentless sessions. i don't think slayer's recent stuff is all that great and this sounds like more of that. it was rumored that the kk solo project was going to have phil anselmo on vocals and gary holt on guitars but it ended up being mark osegueda and phil demmel. kerry's pretty candid about why in this article. https://blabbermouth.net/news/kerry-king-announces-lineup-of-solo-band-shares-first-single-idle-hands tl;dr he went with demmel over holt because he was worried about people calling it baby slayer or slayer light, and his management really wanted anselmo to do vocals but it fell through after the pantera revival happened.

On a scale from 14 to 88, how wary should I be about any black metal I come across on Spotify that's in Russian? The guy from Olhava has a playlist lovingly called "this is woodgaze" and I'm really enjoying it but can't shake that feeling.

The guy from Olhava has a playlist lovingly called "this is woodgaze" and I'm really enjoying it but can't shake that feeling. If a search finds nothing problematic, it's not worth worrying about. Absolute moral cleanliness is not attainable - objectionable people will make music that you hear sometime, even if it's like Ace of Bass or some pop you got from the radio. I'm troubled by this attitude of all one country's music being Nazi-adjacent (be it Russia, or earlier someone mentioned this for France, and Poland is another common target). By all means run google translate or whatever over languages you don't speak, but tarring an entire country both misses that fascism can arise anywhere and denies space for its opposition. Anyway. As far as I know, Olhava, Рожь/Rye, and Trna are reasonable and oppose the invasion of Ukraine and make good tunes.
