Like he knows he should save those people but doesn't feel a strong impulse to do so. Like it's loving Sephiroth, the guy can leap like 30 feet into the air, I'm pretty sure he could have done more than reach out an arm for the remaining soldier. I'm not saying that he was completely cold to it, but more just sort of confused and like "oh yeah I guess it'd be bad if they died and I should do something about this?" edit: I completely missed Tifa's house in the demo lol (and thus the minigame). Gonna do the early part again at some point to find it.

The only thing that clearly put me off in the demo was the visuals — it was hard to see what was going on sometimes the lighting made some of the environments unimpressive. Everything else was outstanding, though, and the music in particular really stood out as being on a different level. I almost wish I didn’t play the demo, because it’s going to be hard to play anything else.

As someone currently replaying Remake I have to say I wholeheartedly disagree with people saying the Rebirth demo's visuals look bad. They are very much a step up from Remake, from the environmental and secondary character's designs to the overall presentation.

Like Sephiroth wasn't always evil or anything, but he was always kind of estranged/detached from most other people (and what connection he felt with people like Angeal/Genesis was largely related to them also being "different" like himself). While there was definitely a lot of Jenova manipulation going on in the later events in Nibelheim, it was still built off of an existing feeling of estrangement from "normal people." I feel like this makes more sense than "guy who is normal (but just kind of awkward/shy) and cares about other people normally" just suddenly going full murder mode after learning he's the product of an experiment. Instead existing feelings of estrangement/detachment were transformed into something darker.

How much is said about Jenova's influence over Sephiroth anyway? I don't remember it being mentioned, but being open to her more murdery power when he was desperate could have been a contributing factor.

It is strongly implied that proximity to Jenova is what set him off. I always read it as 'the combo of the mutant im the pod and Jenova's name opened a crack in his mental defenses that Jenova promptly cracked like am egg'

In the original, he seemed to be almost completely under her control, or at least they were working toward a shared purpose, though he may be influencing her to make him a god (by wiping out all life) rather than just doing what she was sent for, which was to wipe out all life. In the EU stuff, he's in the driver's seat and she's just a force of nature he's manipulating. I like The Thing pretending to be a war hero a lot better than Smirking Unkillable Anime Prettyboy #3223676 with yet another superpower. It's such an interesting inversion of the trope it helped popularize, but alas EU stuff ruined everything by misinterpreting Sephiroth as a main character, and that appears to have carried over to the remakes. The original reveal that he's been dead the entire time and the "Sephiroth" we're seeing walk around is just a shapeshifting meat monster is really cool. Spoilered because I can't be assed to look up the thread's policy on spoiling a 30 year old game.
