Yeah, reagan hiked retirement age in the 1980s for people who were then in their 20s.

Which is one of the reasons it's irritating to read greedy-geezer tropes when we were as politically powerless back then as younguns are today.

Just raise the retirement age for people 55-65 anyway. Their votes don't matter either. Both candidates in whatever given race that is will be on board with the retirement age hike and you'll be directed instead to just run for office yourself.

votes and elections don't matter but kayfabe requires pretending that The People are the ones holding power, and the bogus democratic process chooses a legitimate government.

it's an accountability sink so the two-party oligarchy can blame all of their decisions on voters

If the economy is so big and strong and good and everyone is making more money than inflation has raised prices then why does the president need to ask for this?

Seems a little difficult to reconcile the talking point of “everyone is just imagining that they have way less money and can’t afford anything” with the president meekly asking businesses to stop price gouging everyone because cracks are starting to show.

All of the gambling ads and panel chatter in the NHL is gross, but the one that takes the cake for me is one that emphasizes that you "Bet Local".

From the New York Times some absolute bullshit headline to cover for IBM gutting their retirement plans. Someone much smarter than me (or more invested in doing research) can offer more details, but from a friend who works there, IBM is basically turning their retirement plans into an IOU, which workers can cash out when they leave the company or retire. It’s all for accounting purposes so they don’t have to pay into retirement accounts managed by the worker, and the other piece of this is that workers will make smaller returns on their “money”.

Calling this a pension is a big reach, even for the lying New York Times.

I'll say compared to all of this money going to multinational corporations, the Ontario government having a monopoly on liquor and gambling was a good thing. It was beyond stupid to give up the gambling monopoly.

Just because you'll never own a house, have quality health care, be able to retire, or buy food that isn't on sale doesn't mean your finances are bad.

How long could your average, or I guess more accurately median person last if they lost their job tomorrow. I imagine the best case for some people is “as long as unemployment bennies last”, but for a lot of people even unemployment probably can’t even cover their monthly stuff and it’s gonna be as long as their savings can hold, which is not long.

between that and the idea of retirement being functionally non existent I think it totally jives that the bulk of people are anxious about their finances even if they’re technically fine this very second.

This isn’t really even factoring a medical fiasco or other surprise major expenses/time off work that could pop up at any point in time.

Yeah it’s stupid as hell because even if you have money in your bank account and a job right now you are subject to the whims of an uncaring universe with no safety net. Of course that means you are nervous about your financial situation unless you have enough money to retire today with room to spare.

Like, FIRE people are freaks but I get the mindset.
