Khan has been pretty melty but has also done some good things. Better him mayor of London than the other candidates with a chance of winning.

Guavanaut posted:Yeah I'd be cautious about salts like calcium chloride in that case just because of the presence of rubber seals, although I suppose if you've ever driven on salted roads you'll have plenty all over the vehicle anyway, so a concentrated solution of calc chloride and lukewarm water would work and isn't any worse than what's all over the roads. If it's just for the windshield surely just using a lot of water of any temperature should work? Unless the temperature stresses cause the windshield to crack or something.

Yeah using salted water (especially calcium salts) is better than using hot water that can cause temperature stress, but can rot the seals. Isopropyl and water is a fast way, but dumping a lot of cool water also works, it just refreezes depending on outside temperature. Always using the washer with antifreeze in straight after is probably the best advice regardless of what you're rubbing all over your car glass. The danger of just water is it will re-freeze while driving and your windscreen effectively clouds up on you.

My least favorite thing is when it's so cold out your undiluted, "-18c safe" washer fluid is just warm enough to splatter your windshield, but it freezes on contact with your windshield and covers it with a rank sheet of poison

Yeah my understanding was Sadiq capitulated to Tories a lot and had a big role in shafting TfL/not bailing them out, but it seems the situation was more complicated. I don't like his £151m to the Met Police paid for by a £40 council tax increase + the stop and search stuff previously mentioned - but that might be it in terms of policy. He's also against txing big tech but tbh I don't know if anyone with a chance of getting elected would be different.

Hot water can crack a windscreen, yeah. When I worked in insurance claims handling we’d be inundated with calls for windscreen claims where people had emptied a kettle over it trying to de-ice them every winter.

Sadiq is hardly the socialist firebrand we all want, need and deserve but he’s probably the best politician with any actual power in the UK right now which is extremely depressing.

He's also against txing big tech but tbh I don't know if anyone with a chance of getting elected would be different. TfL were in a pretty bad financial situation coming out of covid and the Tories basically said "cut the services you offer, or we won't bail you out". Given that London doesn't function without public transport, Khan didn't really have a choice. It was absolutely a political play by the Tories, though, hoping that they could point to a reduction in services when the next mayoral election came around and say "see, the muslim communist can't even do that right". (And then the Tories chose yet another headbanger as their mayoral candidate, making the whole thing rather moot.) He could have tried to call their bluff, but I'm pretty sure the Tories would have let London grind to a halt and just blamed Khan for the whole thing, given the whole thing was just a way to make him look bad.

IIRC, the other thing Khan has been pretty crap on is housing (both in terms of general housebuilding and in terms of social housing provision). As others have mentioned, though, he's just a somewhat disappointing centrist rather than one of the far-right weirdos higher up in New New Labour. Not unlike Andy Burnham.

A friend of mine who runs a local foodbank was part of a committee that lobbied against this change. They visited Westminster in person last year and explained clearly and in great detail how this change would cause greater hardship and hunger. So the government know the damage this will cause, and I guess performative cruelty is the main focus

I think the difference is that's people pouring boiling water onto freezing cold windshields. In that case the change in temperature is so rapid it can cause the windshield to crack. I just use tap water (like lukewarm water) and that's enough to melt the ice. It will refreeze if its cold enough but if you put your wipers on, it'll stop it from icing over.
