Is there even a central plot in Sinfest anymore? It just seems to jump from reference to reference and depicting the bad guys as people/groups he hates. Because if there was a central plot, that would mean all of these references exist in the same world, which would just raise even further questions.

Going off mates in the ADF, the absolute most that has ever happened was a handful of people that bought the Liberal propaganda, that Labor would let all the boats come in if they were elected. So something like 2 boats came over shortly after Labor won the 2022, and were stopped in Australian waters by the RAN because, you know, Labor were the ones who started Sovereign Borders and off-shore detention for refugees in the first place, so why would they stop? Otherwise, assume it's a scare campaign from the 'brown people bad' parties of LNP, One Nation, and that one with the guy who tried copying Trump. Like when they announced a boat arrived ON ELECTION DAY, and mass texted people to vote Liberal to stop this from happening (ignoring that the Libs were in power at the time still...) https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-27/scott-morrison-instructed-border-force-election-day-boat/101101464

The obvious next move would be to do the whole Schopenhauer/Wagner shtick of claiming that he's 'just' the Jewish god and therefore inherently flawed, but I think the current version of the American alt-right that Tats takes all of his cues from is far too culturally Protestant to go along with that. That giant Jewish robot literally invading heaven and killing God is still a possibility in his garbage brain world though.

That depends. How much are you drinking as you read? Guavanaut posted:Yeah British 1930s philosemitism is very weird and uncomfortable in a "could you not" sort of way, but it did arise as a reaction against the English, French, and German antisemitism of the earlier decades, and any of Tolkien's "hey I invented a whole Hebrew/Aramaic language for the dwarves isn't that cool?" stuff is vastly preferable to anything that Tats is doing, which is just turning whatever pop culture he last saw a poster of into a bad copy of antidreyfusard propaganda. Tolkien in particular went out of his way to talk about how awesome he thought Jewish people were on a number of occasions. (I remember another letter where he talked about how hanging out with his Jewish friend was like a glimpse of an unfallen world.) But he also made the cultural flaw of the dwarves greed and specifically hoarding of wealth. (At least Gimli never really fell into that.) People are complicated, and bias and prejudices can arise from a number of sources, some without being acknowledged or understood even by the people holding them. And then you have Ishida just writing a strip where he straight-up says Jews run the world and murder whoever they like. Mordaedil posted:I don't see much evidence of this. There are no limbs poking out from the wrong areas, miscolored eyes, extra fingers or inconsistency between the frames that you'd find with AI art and I have no clue what model this would even be using. I got a little curious about this, so I tried a couple of things in freely-available AI image generators. Prompt: "A cartoonist realizing that he's wrong in the style of Tatsuya Ishida." DALL-E 3 via Bing. Prompt: "A cartoonist quitting his job in the style of Tatsuya Ishida." DALL-E 3 via Bing. Prompt: "A cartoonist realizing how terrible he is in the style of Tatsuya Ishida." DALL-E 2. (Midjourney's free trial seems to be offline at the moment, so I can't try that one.) I wouldn't be surprised if Ishida was taking shortcuts of some kind with his art as he gets older, but I doubt it's just full-on AI generation.

If it was AI generated he'd feed it his entire strip library to teach it the style, as I roughly understand things. I don't think it is though. Some people hit that stride where they can art in their style at high speed, especially if it's part of their day to day income. Sinfest is 23 years old, he's likely got a robotic process about it and likely a sizeable backlog of strips. Oh yes, that's right. This is racism and pop culture mindrot so deeply entrenched that it has brewed for months at a time! Then again Sinfest has such a lovely, spotty narrative that he can freely insert dank memes and headlines as they happen with a fresh drawn bit of trash.

The link between dragons, dwarves, and gold lust goes back to Fafnir in Norse mythology. Of course, dwarves in mythology were earth spirits, not a people. Tolkien decided to make dwarves an deliverate analog to Jewish people at some point during the writing (exiles from their homeland, a population dominated by craftsmen). It's possible he combined these two separate inspirations without considering what they looked like together, but I can't believe it wouldn't occur to him given how prominent antijewish propaganda was at the time.
