Mirages climb through weather after takeoff

A-4s and MiG-29s prepare for departure:

Burnt departs as the other F-16s taxi:

Viggens (playing as surrogates for Argentine Super Étendards) departing

Royal Navy Sea Harriers in foreground, as the Mirage 2000s patrol in the background at altitude.

The first J-15 (Su-33) engages a pair of F-16s over Rio Gallegos. This J-15 defends left and low to evade an AMRAAM. The PLAN aviators end up trading two J-15s in exchange for 1x F-16C, a HAWK radar, and a NASAMs radar in this engagement.

As the J-15 breaks low, it is met by a HAWK missile from a SAM site, rising through the clouds and scoring a kill. (This HAWK battery would be punished minutes later by a JH-7 firing an anti-radiation missile into its search radar).

The CSAD MiG-29 flight scored two kills on J-15s, though lost one of their own to hostile fire.

Harriers struck multiple ground units with great success, though saw that their APKWS (short-range laser guided rocket based around the Hydra rocket) suffered in haze and moderate winds.

The A-4s, Ford Flight, go in, struggling to stay low enough to avoid the naval ships' SAMs but not so low that they collide with the ocean or dirt. One would die to a naval SAM, two hit the water, as three more push in.

J-11s scream in to intercept the Skyhawks. Their first couple of missiles go stupid almost immediately, losing lock in the clutter as they try to track the lead A-4 hugging the deck.

However, under the SAM umbrella of the PLAN ships, the J-11s are able to regroup and reattack from behind, splashing the three remaining A-4s (one pictured in distance). As opposed to the cocky J-15 pilots who rushed in, these J-11s who have been in combat with CSAD before are showing the discipline to maintain their patrol area and protect the fleet.

the Viggens / Super Étendards fire their anti-ship missiles from standoff range and break off.

Their missiles RB-15F anti-ship missiles cruise in before dropping to extremely low altitude for terminal guidance.

The PLAN escorts are largely ineffective with their SAMs versus these threats, though CIWS does bring down several of the anti-ship missiles.

How do you do, fellow ships?

This ship is catastrophically sunk.

e: One of the anti-ship missiles just side-stepping an escort to smash a transport.

Others are critically damaged, and the crews lower the life boats.

MiG-29 landing after mission.

TheViggens / Super Étendards head home, short one member, who had an unfortunate meeting with terrain while trying to avoid radar contact with PLAN ships and aircraft on egress.

As they continue to their final home station after a dangerous stop for fuel at Gallegos, a base already frantically flushing to avoid Chinese shelling, they finally catch sight of some sun.

Colt AAR

Hola folks it's Chevy 1-1 filling in for my brother over in Colt 1-1. He's asked me to relay the report since he's still on his way back from outside Rio Gallegos after getting shot down. He called me about halfway through a bottle of rum with a pair of local taxi drivers that have been part of a massive civilian effort underway moving people out of the way of what seems to be an inevitable new invasion front. Thankfully he was very close to friendly controlled areas but on the parachute ride down got to see a lot of enemy action. According to him and Air command Colt did ok.

Overall we were tasked to BARCAP and we did where we engaged with a 2-ship element of Su-33's. We killed both but not before lead got shot down. Colt 1-2 and 1-3 spent the remainder of the flight working with Rattler 1 (Burntcornmuffin) who was invaluable for assisting with situational awareness and helping Colt 1-2 who was having radio difficulties.

What we did well:

I thought communication in-flight was good, situational awareness was within about what's expected for the tools we have to work with in the Mig-29 there.
Responsiveness by the pilots was great, we went into the engagement and got shot at first, leading to 2 and 3 successfully evading the missile shots and immediately re-engaging and finishing the flight off.
Colt 1-1 didn't get shot at first and was able to splash one Su-33 at the start of the engagement. 1-1 was then killed unawares due to a long range IR shot from the other Su-33 who went radar off but Colt 1-3 was able to immediately find and kill the target.

What we could improve:

Situational awareness could be better, that is partly due to limitations of the plane sensors and RWR systems, but as lead 1-1 completely lost the 2nd Su-33 and was killed by surprise, I should do better there.
Fuel management is always hard in the Mig29 but it did end up leading to the forced landing of 1-2 along a highway in the middle of nowhere.

Notes:
We presume that a fuel truck and engineer team are en route to establish if Colt 1-2 can be flown out of the area. At worst we should be able to salvage the R77s and R73s from the airframe along with other spare parts.

Overall having the assist from Rattler 1 helped a great deal. I suggested to flight command that if F16 airframes become more limited, we should consider a hybrid formation of 1 F16 along with multiple Mig29s. This would allow for very good synergy of using the advanced F16 sensors and datalink while allowing our forces to use our large stock of R77 BVR missiles to support our Aim120 armed counterparts. Likewise we could consider using Mig29s ahead and below of F16s with their radars off, allowing Mig29s to engage from below with longer range IR missiles. This could help take some pressure off of ABM and allow individual hybrid elements to work against J-11s who might engage with an Illuminating F16 first ignoring the Mig29s nearby. Lots of things to consider there, but as supplies start running low, there is particularly good synergy between the F16/Mig29 pairing to be used if wanted.

All in all I'd say it was as successful as you could hope given the asymmetry in equipment. It was dicey af but we got some of them, and maybe even spooked them into not committing to the full amphib invasion(yet).

Route: Bogota, Colombia to Talcahuano, Chile (SKBO > SPJC > SCFA > SCIE)
Distance: 4,715 km / 2,545 nmi

Over the last couple weeks, there have been persistent low-level rumors of chaos and disorder within the nation of Chile. While international attention has remained focused on the conflict in the South Atlantic, there have been reports of unusual tremors felt as far south as Buenos Aires, high wave warnings along the Pacific coast, civic unrest, and even prison riots. Military commanders have tried to keep CSAD focused on their conflict, and suggested that these rumors boil down to nothing more than unusual weather and a civilian society unused to artillery explosions or the influx of refugees. But the stories persist…

Throughout these incidents, outgoing Chilean president Michelle Bachelet has insisted that these concerns are overblown, and that there have been no problems that Chile is incapable of dealing with. Still, there was a lockdown of national newspapers, and border authorities limited all traffic to military shipments. There is a war on, after all. International geologists registered their concerns regarding significant seismological readings on Feb. 27th originating near the Chilean area of Concepción, but without any access to the region it was difficult to know the depth and severity of the activity. However, on March 11th, 2010, two events occurred that completely changed public perception: First, Sebastián Piñera officially assumed office of the president, after his party of liberal conservatives defeated an incumbent socialist party considered too ideologically sympathetic to China. Second, a major VII Mercalli earthquake struck during his inauguration and rocked the halls of Congress. It was an aftershock.

In the hours that followed, the truth came out swiftly. Due to the interests of wartime national security, as well as protecting her own legacy, Bachelet had been covering up the effects of a massive IX Mercalli earthquake. Hundreds are dead, and more than 350,000 buildings were damaged. Tsunamis devastated coastal cities such as Talcahuano, and caused a complete breakdown of law and order. Vigilantism, looting, and prison breakouts had overtaken a number of the rural areas, catalyzed by the lack of military police that were already dedicated to the war effort. Unlike his predecessor, President Piñera declared a catastrophe and called for international assistance.

The Long Afternoon War has consumed a vast amount of resources and attention by the allied nations, but there are still a number of South American countries that have studiously remained unaligned and therefore relatively untouched. Chief amongst them is Colombia, which enjoys one of the largest economies and populations of the region and commands a strong strategic position due to the nearby Panama Canal. The country has a long history of treaties and pacts with its neighbors, such as Mercosur or the Union of South American Nations, and was once a founding member of the Council of South American Defense. Indeed it was recently considered one of the closest American partners in Latin America. As such its non-participation in the conflict has been highly contentious, though Colombian president Álvaro Uribe has defended the policy of nonalignment on the basis of confronting marxist FARC rebels. Still the uncovering of this humanitarian crisis in Chile has prompted a display of neighborly goodwill. Emergency supplies and aid workers are now being organized for delivery to the relief hotspots. In particular, mobile hospitals are being deployed - professional doctors and specialist medical equipment are in extremely short supply.

Colombian regional airlines like Aliansa and Air Colombia are unique on the global stage - they still operate the venerable Douglas DC-3s and DC-6s. Some of them are carefully maintained C-47 Skytrains that were originally developed for the Second World War! With a number of Chilean airports reporting service disruptions, the austere capabilities of these aircraft may prove invaluable for reaching the afflicted areas. Still, their relatively short range and cargo capacity are a testament to the hesitant commitment of the Colombian government. Perhaps this first airlift will also be accompanied by a much-needed political thaw.

TF 'Lanza' Mission - Operation Aplasta al Topo

Package Lead AAR

The operation went really well, I'd say. It appears the PLA took some efforts to conceal a large number of their tanks and logistics units in the rain and muck, and we couldn't find all of them. However, we did find their engineer and artillery support units out in the open and really hammered them and their paltry escorts.. but something seemed strange. There was supposed to be a full armored brigade in this position, but we found maybe a battalion's worth of units out in the open. I think something strange is afoot here, and recommend our counter-intelligence teams do a detailed investigation on any PLA spies or assets who could've tipped off the PLA that our rotary wing force was approaching. It's likely large elements camouflaged themselves in the rain and muck, or some quantity of them retreated down the highway under their SAM coverage...

What went well

Having the Hinds and Gazelle's pick off AA units before the Hueys and Hips engaged was a very effective approach, as they only received minor small arms fire on their rocket strafing passes. The Hips and Hueys can pack a lot of rockets and guns and still maintain good speed, so this appears to be a workable approach for the future. The Gazelle's nav computer helped keep us on track in the poor weather and strong wind's, and comms discipline this week was excellent. There was just enough information being passed around to keep everyone informed, and we had minimal losses. Kudos to all of our pilots, veterans and newbies alike! These weather conditions are extremely challenging and we all made it there and made it back without any lost sheep.

Where we can improve

Fuel planning for gunships in a CAS/BAI role is a bit different than planning for slicks doing utility and troop deployment work, and a few of our pilots were dangerously low on fuel on landing. Ensure you plan for extra fuel for loitering time, even if it means taking less munitions. We also found a mysterious pallet of AT-6's that actually had AT-9's in them for the Hinds, which they used to good effect, however with those missiles now expended, we exclusively have AT-6's available going forward. We don't expect any more from Russia given the current state of world politics, after all... Also, for rocket runs, we should ensure we stick to the established flight profile of a high speed pass followed by a wide turn back into the assigned hold/orbiting point via a safe route, as prolonged orbiting exposes our delicate Hueys to Manpads and gun/cannon fire. Wait for or request clearance from Bandido flight lead or mission package lead before assuming orbits for side gunners on targets, and during this ensure proper deconfliction is done (ie. hold fire on AI gunners) while people do straight through rocket passes to ensure no friendly fire occurs.

**TOP SECRET//NOFORN**

**INTELLIGENCE UPDATE**
---
**INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY:**

**Situation Overview:**
- People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has deployed a significant portion of its J-11 fighter aircraft, allocating half of its available assets to the front line.
- In recent engagements, PLAAF has suffered losses, with 4 J-15 aircraft downed. Notably, these aircraft operate from the CV-16 carrier, stationed approximately 500 nautical miles away.
- Tierra del Fuego, an area of strategic importance, is currently being patrolled by 4 J-11s from the PLAAF, indicating continued air presence in the region despite losses.
- PLAAF's J-11 fleet is significantly depleted, with only 4 out of the initial 6 aircraft remaining operational. Moreover, those still in service are reported to be in poor condition, with only 2 to 4 aircraft expected to be available within the next 24 hours.

**Marine Brigade Movement:**
- The 2nd Marine Brigade (2nd Marine BDE) is actively involved in the operation and is currently engaged in crossing the ferry terminal.
- The movement of the 2nd Marine BDE is facilitated by 4 Ropucha-class landing ships (LSTs), with additional support provided by two Type 054 frigates acting as escorts.

**Naval Situation:**
- Cargo ships and other LSTs have diverted from the Rio Gallegos area, leaving behind warships and their surface-to-air missile (SAM) defenses to maintain control over the region.
- Most LSTs previously deployed by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) are redirected to support the Punta Arenas lifeline, indicating a strategic shift in naval resources.
- The remaining LSTs have turned back towards Rio Grande, suggesting a reorganization of naval assets in response to operational needs.

**Conclusion:**
- The current situation in Rio Gallegos presents both challenges and opportunities for our forces. With PLAAF's air assets depleted and naval resources redirected, there is a window of opportunity to capitalize on weakened defenses.
- However, caution is advised as PLAAF maintains a presence in the region with remaining J-11 fighters. Additionally, the naval presence, though diminished, still poses a threat to our operations.
- Coordination and swift action will be crucial in exploiting the current situation to achieve our objectives in Operation Rio Gallegos.

TF 'Lanza' Mission - Operation Aplasta al Topo 2 - Electric Boogaloo

Great work last mission, pilots! We severely degraded their artillery and attached engineer battalion, so the only way they have through the minefield for the time being, is around it. I've received word that the PLA concealed a large amount of their force that we didn't end up seeing. Apparently the PLA may have some spies that passed on that our task force was heading their way, and ordered their massive supply convoys and the bulk of their tanks to the west under SAM cover.

Once we left the area, reports from the front lines indicate the PLA stood up their armored push for real. A massive column of tanks with their logistics train in tow proceeded along the highway, approached the ridgeline and started climbing it, before pushing North into the EA 11th Brigade. The 11th's commander saw the threat and shifted some of his units to the heights to block their progress, but the fighting is intense.

Mission Objectives

Our overall mission will be to blunt the PLA's armored assault by providing CAS for the 11th BDE and cutting into their extensive logistical tail. CAS will be provided by Dragones on the front lines, Orca will bring some elements of the anti-tank equipped heavy weapons teams from the Chilean battle group from the FARP to the center of the front line, and Delfín and Bandido will go hunting for their supply convoys along the highways with the Gazelle's picking off their AA units first again. Ford will be on station to provide SEAD for the package, their Shrikes are a bit limited but they can still suppress the PLA and eliminate higher threat level emitters that we simply can't engage. Prepare for a rough fight, and do not start the engagement until Ford has established SEAD.

Tasking/Flight Profile/Terrain Considerations

Ford will make best speed to their IP, and once the Helicopters are close begin conducting their SEAD operations. Ford will coordinate with Delfín (who have a better RWR) to keep an eye on the state and types of radar threats in the AO, and keep the focus on SEAD rather than DEAD. Ford will not advance beyond the FEBA as ALR for them is Low. KC-130 should be in the area if refueling is required

Bandido and Delfín will use mostly the same ingress as last mission, shifted to the West in the center of the wide valley instead of right along the ridge, as tanks and AA are likely to engage them from the heights. Delfín will screen for AA units and identify an ideal approach for Bandido, engage identified surface to air threats, and give Bandido the all clear for them to proceed their strafing runs. Delfín will watch from a distance and call out MANPAD launches, new RWR threats, and relay emitter types and approximate direction to Ford as Bandido light up the soft targets. ALR is High for Bandido, and Low for Delfín

Orca will load up as many AT teams as they can while still carrying 2-4 rocket pods at the FARP. Dragones and Orca will be shifting their IP East onto the center of the heights, and will look for friendly units to mark the front line. Dragones will proceed directly to the FEBA and start engaging surface to air threats before switching to armored vehicles. Try to extract the most value out of each AT-6 shot, whether that means shooting tanks from behind or choosing lighter-armored targets that will be a guaranteed one-shot kill. ALR is high. Orca will identify a suitable LZ ~1-2 km from the FLOT, their flight lead will drop a full line of smoke to obscure the LZ, and the flight will then proceed to land and disembark their troops. Once the troops are deployed, Orca will provide CAS with rockets on any softer targets identified by Dragones. ALR for Orca is Medium, ie. do not engage on a suicide rocket run.

South American Combined Armada

Thank you Montgomery,

The readiness of your troops to help shoulder this war does them credit admiral, and we very much appreciate it. The willingness of Britain to support Argentina and the rest of the Council of South American Defense in our hour of need will go down in history.

In consultation with CACC Air Commander Gen. Castillo, and subject to the overall authority of CSAD Supreme Commander Gen. Carlos, it has been determined that your Royal Navy squadron would best attach to the Naval Aviation Command of the South American Combined Armada (SACA), under my leadership. I can assure you that they will find themselves right at home alongside our sailors and naval aviators. In the event of a larger commitment of British military forces, we should of course revisit this arrangement and establish an independent area of operational responsibility.

In the meantime, we will begin preparing Rio Gallegos for the imminent arrival of the gallant 801st aviators and their BAe GR.9 Harriers. It will be a bit close quarters, as dozens of F-5 Tiger IIs are already stationed there as part of 1st Fighter Squadron, as well as a number of C-130s from the 2nd Troop Transport Group; but surely your aviators must be used to close quarters as carrier pilots, and it will be a temporary inconvenience. Yet I agree that establishing a separate airbase for your troops would be a wise decision - for is it not said that good fences make good neighbors? Once your Flying Captain has arrived and the squadron has settled itself, we can begin cooperating on the siting and rapid construction of FARP Bella Vista. I'd suggest that they conduct a leader's recon as soon as they are able to do so.

Welcome once again admiral, we need your fighting spirit along with your courageous armed forces,

Adm. Sampaio

You will, without a doubt, be heartened to learn that the UKCSG is ship-shape and Bristol fashion; I expect we'll be approaching the AO by March 19th.

To delineate the composition of our task group:

  • HMS Invincible
  • HNoMS Helge Ingstad (F313) [augmented with 2xCIWS]
  • HMS Somerset F82
  • HMS Grafton F80
  • HMS Kent F78
  • HMS Portland F79

While I trust you are well acquainted with the prowess of the 'Vince, I feel compelled to draw your esteemed attention to the Helge Ingstad. She boasts the latest Aegis combat system, and the Norwegian Captain has rather colourfully expressed his intentions regarding the Chinese fleet in terms not fit for logging nor restating in the presence of a lady. Rest assured, the bite can quite match the bark in this instance.

Naturally, upon our arrival, the UKCSG will operate under the discretion of the Admiralty.

For now hoever, the 801st shall continue their operations inland and you may continue to deploy them as you deem appropriate.

With the warmest regards,

Montgomery Flibberflab

AIR GOON ORGANIZATIONAL PROMISE

How long will this campaign continue? Perhaps you've thought about jumping in, but buying South Atlantic seems steep at 50 dollars since the map is hardly used elsewhere?

Fixed-wing centered, South American crewed air operations will continue at least until July of 2024, so towards the end of this summer. After that, there is a huge chance that various helicopter operations, or perhaps US-UK centric operations against the Falklands continue.
The Council of South American Defense has one goal: eviction of the PLA presence on South American continent. How that plays into the larger war matters to their allies, but much less to CSAD. They wish to retain sovereignty over their continent.

Eventually, when it releases and this campaign is well put to sleep, my goal is to go to the incoming Kola Peninsula-map of DCS, to explore Finland and Sweden fighting against Russia.

However, as we wait for that, come join the fight for South American independence, and rest assured that there's promised weekly content for at least half a year ahead!

My apologies for a late review.

The Army can choose to place a SABER radar somewhere on the map. It will partake in the Link 16 network and feed tracks to AWACS without bringing AWACS itself closer.
The PLANAF and PLAAF planes might fire an ARM at it, however.

I need a map of its location, and a map marker for it, and you can expect it in the game world.

I looked over the loadsheet once more. I wasn't sure how we were going to get 25 passengers into a plane with no passenger seats until I saw the ground crew bringing a few rows of seats to the plane and installing them after the cargo containers were loaded. The poo poo you can get away with in wartime, I thought.

We taxied from the military ramp at Brasilia and got pelted with rain from the passing storm cell. By the time we were holding short, the storm had passed

We got the plane airborne, and started our climb to FL360.

An hour later we landed at Sao Paulo, where we were scheduled to take on 3 more passengers and the radar unit someone forgot a couple weeks ago.

After a break for lunch, we were taxiing again, and once airborne, were weren't going to be on the ground again for almost 5 hours.

As we approached El Calafate, we took in the scenery of Lago Argentino

We were a bit oversized for the airport's facilities, but still managed to get the cargo, self-loading and otherwise, delivered.

Some flights that need doing from the civil aviation crowd. These flights partially take place in the past just to make timeline work out better, but in any case, they're putting together a team, but need some civil aviators to go collect the expertise. (I don't have MSFS and don't know what DLC people do or don't have, so if you need to go to a nearby airport that's actually simulated or pick a specific plane, go for it).

1. A bunch of suits and some need a ride from Ronald Reagan Washington National airport to Brunswick Executive Airport. Aircraft: Corporate Jet.
2. There is a man fishing at Alturas Lake, Idaho. Go get him, starting from Boise Airport. He's semi-retired, but no one knows old radar systems like this guy. Aircraft: Bush plane or seaplane.
3. Heavy Cargo lift required to transport parts and hazardous materials from Rota, Spain to Bangor, Maine. Aircraft: Bulk cargo.
4. A collection of semi-retirees and a bagman require transport from Miami, FL to Mayport, Florida. Aircraft: Executive prop, corporate jet, or seaplane. Bonus if you make it scenic instead of flying across central Florida.
5. Leonard Glenn Francis requires a ride from Subic Bay to Muara Naval Base in neutral Brunei. He also requires a second leg to Jakarta, after which he can likely attain regular commercial transport. Aircraft: Dealer's choice.

You get a lot of weird requests as part of a small bush plane service in the Rockies, especially when there's a world war on. A short hop from Boise to Alturas Lake to pick up some guy fishing and bring him back barely ranked.

I hopped in our company's handy old DHC-2 seaplane, got a quick taxi clearance, and proceeded to climb as best the old girl could into what was definitely VFR conditions.

It did clear up soon enough, and it was smooth flying over snow covered mountains towards the lake

Soon enough the lake came into view. And was very clearly, frozen solid.

Who needs skis, a seaplane can land on ice just fine!

HELO OPS MISSION AAR

Hola everyone it's Chevy 1-1 "Breaky" reporting in for another brother downed behind enemy lines. This has been a hard year, hard for my cousins in Argentina and Chile especially. Solidarity from Peru brothers, we are right next to you.

I was told that my brother (Dragones 1-1) was downed by an enemy SA-8 battery early in the mission. His CPG made it back to friendly lines, some 7km from where he was shot down. He could not confirm his pilots status, but could not confirm that he was dead. We hold out hope.

Our intel from him and surviving pilots is below:

Summary

As best we can put together, all flights arrived without incident to the front line above the southern ridge. Ford flight just minutes before had engaged several illuminating radar contacts. Communication and formation at ALL points within the flight was maintained and overall a high degree of situational awareness was maintained by all. Delfin was tasked with pathfinding and engaging early AAA, MANPAD, SHORAD targets with highest priority. Dragones was immediately behind them and further East, with the same priority. Orca was tasked to follow Dragones and drop troops just behind the friendly front and after laying a smokescreen. Bandido was to follow Delfin once all SHORAD was cleared and prosecute whatever ground vehicles they could handle.

Upon arrival to the front on top of the ridge, no SHORAD was found and only primarily tank columns. Visible on the S road from the ridgeline was a huge (50+ unit) convoy stretching across the horizon. This wide distribution of targets made it exceedingly difficult for user and AI sensors to find SHORAD units within a useful timeframe. After FORDs initial SEAD strikes (which were indeterminate) Dragones passed initial Tank only columns and pushed to the top of the southern ridge. As they did so a pair of enemy Mi-8's boldly pushed right through our lines. Dragones turned to engage the oblivious red Hips and 1-1 was immediately shot down by an undetected SA-8 missile launcher. Unfortunately no one was able to determine where the shot came from and shortly after Dragones 1-2 was shot down by the same launcher. Further interviews with mission crew may indicate a better target area, **OOC: There should be tons of visual recon on where this was now**.

From here things fell apart quickly. The loss of Dragones alone was bad but Delfin quickly met with incident when a precision strike of MBT launches of ATGMs towards our Gazelles was far more accurate at range than we ever expected. This immediately killed Delfin lead less than 2 minutes after Dragones. With most of our best sensors in disarray and our primary strikers down we decided to see if we could salvage anything from this action by one offensive foray by Bandito before withdrawing.

Shortly before this Orca flight, without fanfare or incident, completely fulfilled their mission, they dropped smoke at the front lines and laid down a full platoon (OOC: amount?) of anti-tank infantry, directly able to engage tank groups at the front behind a line of smoke. This was the lone bright spot of the mission, and we salute the professionalism of our Hip pilots, as always. However, Orca 1-2 Prawned was immediately "detained" after landing at base and bystanders have heard the term "blue on blue" mentioned in hush tones.

Bandito admirably charged in south of the ridge but was swiftly rebuffed by AAA fire from several parts of the convoy E-W along the highway. Two UH-1s were damaged and it was unclear if they made forced landings or were lost outright. At this point lead called everyone to abort mission and RTB. The remainder of the flight was performed in good formation and without incident.

In total, we lost: 2 Mi-24s, 2 UH-1's and 2 Gazelles. We destroyed: several blue units and possibly a few AK soldiers. We did deploy a full complement of anti-tank soldiers behind excellent cover.

The good:

- Unit coordination, communication and formations were excellent throughout. We wasted no time forming up and getting on mission. Radio discipline was great along with coordination.
- Flight lead decision making was good. Everyone properly initiated their mission in the right time and place.
- While unfruitful Bandido without reservation charged into a can't win attack run against an enemy convoy. While we did not achieve what we wanted, valuable intel was gained by the survivors.
- A large anti-tank infantry force was delivered directly to the front just in time to engage an enemy armored assault.
- FORD made multiple SEAD runs, and were only limited by the ordinance they carried.

The bad:

- Honestly, I think we got very unlucky right at the beginning, which more or less doomed the operation. One or two changes for the better might have pushed it the other way but even then difficulty was hard.
- Situational awareness by the lead (Dragones 1-1 / me, was poor. When I was hit with an SA-8 launch, myself and my crew should have at least been able to relay the heading from which it was fired. If we had relayed this info, or had it beforehand, it might have led to a much better outcome.
- While less likely, we could have salvaged the mission by immediately withdrawing at this point, allowing FORD to re-engage and Delfin to then identify and coordinate a strike on the SA-8 site.
- The ATGM threat against our helicopters was sorely underestimated by all planners, leads and pilots in this operation. We MUST better consider this threat in future helicopter operations.

Comments:

- I hope the SA-8 can be dealt with in an ARMA or part of a fixed wing OP. Given the crack anti-tank troops and the now realized position of the SA-8 radar and the minefield, this could be... fun.
- I think if the SA-8 had been better expected by lead then we might aborted if Ford did not get an Osa kill. If we had more intel, this might have gone a different way, especially if that allowed FORD a more direct attack path.
- Every lead did a good job and made this easy for me on my 1st mission lead. I think I did "OK" and pulled back our forces before it was a total loss, but I am sure there is room to improve given how little we accomplished today.
- Fuuuuuck this one was hard / sucked for everyone, glad everyone on had a good attitude and no one raged out. Better luck next time and thanks all for seeing it through.

Lima 2 stayed most of the time separated from Lima 1, but close enough to assist. One time almost got overwhelmed under PLAN Marine ambush when the Chinese squad had a machinegunner on a small ridgeline and just absolutely plastered fire into us.

One Mi-8 destroyed as it was landing near us, and around 10-15 enemy KIA caused by our team.

All members made it towards east safely with sufficient ammo, light injuries.

Priority: Immediate Attention Required

Background:

Esteemed Colleagues,

In light of our impending deployment to the South Atlantic conflict zone, it has come to my attention that our esteemed crew chiefs have undertaken the noble task of cataloging our arsenal. Upon their diligent scrutiny, it was initially deemed that the 12 Apache Gunships housed within the Invincible were beyond salvage. However, subsequent reassessment by our dedicated crew suggests that restoration to operational status is indeed feasible, albeit requiring an infusion of substantial spares.

I am pleased to report that our Chief Engineer has been in correspondance with the venerable Logistics Officer Walter Warehouse of Wattisham Airfield, who has demonstrated commendable diligence in procuring the requisite itinerary and stands poised to expedite dispatch to RAF Mildenhall at a moment's notice. I am lead to believe an A330 Atlas befitting our needs may be attainable and I trust a top notch aircrew can be mustered.

Regrettably, my geographical remoteness precludes personal oversight of the forthcoming arrangements. Thus, I implore your valued assistance in finalising the intricate flight logistics from Mildenhall to the theater of operations. This endeavor necessitates delicate coordination with our esteemed CSAD allies to determine a suitable landing locale for the incoming flight.

I must impress upon you the utmost confidentiality surrounding this operation. The revelation of our Gunships to our allies remains pending, as their purported loss was hitherto assumed. It is imperative that we manage the expectations and morale of our local forces with the utmost discretion.

I beseech you to treat this matter with the gravity it deserves and expedite its execution with all due haste.

Getting ready to depart DC. I was hoping for the nice run north and a good view over the city, but no such luck today with a southerly wind. Hopefully these suits are ok, there’s no firewall between the cockpit and where they sit. God, I hope one of them doesn’t want to sit up front. Unless she’s cute I guess.

Holding short, had to wait for a Southwest flight to land, god...imagine free for all seating, what a nightmare. No thank you.

Andrews, why the hell didn’t we take off from there? This is supposed to be some secret squirrel military poo poo right?

Speaking of secret squirrel military poo poo, Aberdeen. Got vectored around in case parts of some test gun catch me all the way up here at 15 thousand and climbing. Better safe I guess...

You can almost see New York City from here. Gross.

Westover, in Massachusetts...a pale shade of it’s former glory, surprised they haven’t turned it into “affordable” housing, all the craze these days.

Nothing beats sunsets in the sky, nothing.

Airport in sight, through the clouds, just gotta get below this poo poo and it should be a smooth ride.

A shallower approach than I would like, but at least it’s not through the clouds.

Safely deposited the suits, they ran into a waiting pair of black SUVs and I have to find some hick to sip fuel from.

LIMA 1 AAR

Teams deployed in good order and advanced north-north-east towards a known LZ and a sea landing zone. Original intent was to make for the LZ, cause mischief, and exfil. While advancing in we were caught at close range by a PLA and barely pulled through. The woods were very thick and this caused serious issues identifying the PLA patrols. This was to plague us for the rest of the mission.

As we re-grouped a PLA fast mover, possibly a Flanker type, went down. Both teams made for the crash site and engaged both pilots and some engineers. INTEL WAS SECURED. At this point we decided we'd stirred up the pot enough and started moving east towards exfil. This was a tough exercise with sporadic contact as the PLA teams sent in both MI-8's and paratroopers to pin us down. We suffered wounded, but by the end of the mission were able to extract.

Intel was secured, two pilot bodies were thoroughly ransacked, and CPL Breaky departed with a backpack filled with PLA radios and GPS's. If it wasn't nailed down, it went in his pack.

Thanks to everyone for working together on the op, it was tough but enjoyable. Big thanks to Elendil for being the eye in the sky, it's a lot of fun.

TO: General Carlos, CSAD
FROM: Ministry of Defence, Chile

General, as you know, the effects of the earthquake were devastating. Chile is still reeling, and we are outstretched in the recovery efforts. Chile requests the help of the CSAD efforts, and while you are assigned as the supreme commander, you have the authority to both coordinate flights, and release capability for them. We have several flights that we are currently unable to fill due to lack of experienced pilots and functioning airplanes.

As such, we request that you, as quickly as possible, provide us with a rudimentary plan in how you intend to supply these following areas.

quote:

Site Alpha:
Guadaba, Los Sauces, Araucania. This place has a large refugee camp from displaced people, and requires over 20,000 pounds of water and food and vital medicine.

quote:

Site Bravo:
Lonquimay, Araucania. This larger town requires 50,000lbs of food, water, and vital medicine and radio communication equipment, plus a ten person team of physicians and dentists.

quote:

Site Charlie:
Panguipulli, Los Ríos. Another displaced persons camp. This requires a team of 60, comprising of various engineers, doctors, and health staff.

All above sites are considered largely isolated due to mudslides and the heavy rain, making ground delivery extremely challenging and unreliable.

We require from you a plan of how to supply them, what is the closest airport to get to, and what planes you intend to use. The least amount of airplanes, and the smallest, you can use, the better.

ALL SUPPLIES for this are located at: Aeropuerto Zapala, Neuquén Province, Argentina.

Looking forward to your response.

Admiral Ileana Maria Sampaio
South American Combined Armada

Naval Orders - 16 MAR 10

AO Dart (Chilean Sea)

The ARA Veinticinco de Mayo has had their navigational radar repaired, and has received much-needed A-4E Skyhawk reinforcements for Ford Squadron. She is ready to sail, and the Chilean fleet is ready to sail with her. They will travel south from Puerto Montt and join the Ecuadorian Fleet in the Patagonian fjords, an 18-hour journey that has them due to arrive the morning of 17MAR10. Once the fleet has arrived and regrouped, they will provide a much-needed respite from the chaos and congestion now being experienced in Puerto Natales, Rio Turbio, and even El Calafate. The reinforced naval group will need to maintain regular combat action patrols to defend against the Chinese bombers that had previously been harassing the Chilean fleet, but represents an opportunity to shut down the Magdalena Supply Route and starve the Punta Arenas offensive of much-needed war material.

The CNS O'Higgins and CNS Carrera "Wolfpack" Combined Action Group (CAG) have successfully penetrated deep behind the enemy sensor net, and have tracked the remains of the 2nd PLAN fleet. Many of those ships appear to have rapidly retreated from the area, supporting the Rio Gallegos offensive in lieu of defending their Magdalena supply route. In their place has been large numbers of anti-surface warfare aircraft deploying thousands of sonar buoys, as well as evidence of minelayers attempting to block off the harbor areas. This is a significant escalation that may take decades for CSAD to reverse, and if the PLAN is systematically mining Cape Horn it will cause catastrophic effects to global shipping. It is unclear how long this high operational tempo can be sustained, and there is evidence that Chinese mines have already destroyed a cargo ship as well as a minelayer. SACA will continue observing these activities and relay appropriate intel to our concerned NATO partners.

In the meantime, the Wolfpack has begun tracking one of the few PLAN destroyers that appear to remain in the region. It was found anchoring south of Tierra del Fuego, isolated and not transmitting via radio. Suspecting a trap, Cpt. Larrain of the O'Higgins elected to cautiously probe the area for nearby reinforcements. None appear to have been sighted, and the Chilean submarines remain undetected. Now that they can ambush from an unexpected direction, it is time to strike. With much of the 2nd PLAN either sunk or diverted to AO Stone, it is possible that this ship represents the flagship of the diminished 2nd PLAN. Take her down.

AO Stone (Argentine Sea)

The situation off the coast of Argentina is unfortunately much worse than in the west. Multiple air strikes against the 1st PLAN have been fended off by the copious amounts of Chinese air superiority fighters and SAM systems. There have been reports of stealth aircraft and ECW systems supporting the Chinese offensive and preventing any coherent defense. Many pilots have died attempting to defend against the invasion, but the situation appears untenable. They have delivered large numbers of troops into the Rio Gallegos area, and their fleets are now virtually uncontested. The aviation forces have been forced to flee several of our airbases, and our ground troops are contending with heavy bombardment. Our fleets are simply no match for this display of naval power, and must retreat to the north. The Argentine and Brazilian fleets, as well as the accompanying escorts and support ships, are to immediately make their way towards Comodoro Rivadavia and the British fleet. Combined with their more advanced ships and fighters, our forces may stand a better chance at surviving the onslaught. Still, with additional Chinese forces pouring into the theater including the 4th PLAN Liaoning carrier fleet, we will need every possible advantage. The Combined Armada once again requests the deployment of much-needed naval reinforcements that are better capable of fending off these long-range anti-ship missiles.

In the meantime, the brave sailors aboard the Brazilian submarine Tupi and the Argentinean submarine ARA San Juan must be called into action. Captain "Alch" of the ARA San Juan is ordered to conduct strikes against the landing ship groups that are in the vicinity of Rio Grande. They are defended by a number of frigates and likely ASW helicopters, but the sheer number of LSTs involved in the operation means that the escorts are likely stretched thin. Take the opportunity to thin the herd. Similarly, Captain Maurício Conceição Sá of the Tupi is ordered to proceed southwest. Their role is to screen the naval retreat and punish any PLAN ships that attempt to push forward and get into range of either those ships or the coastal port cities. There's a number of large frigates, destroyers, and even a cruiser operating in the region. However, they lack the supporting air assets and smaller escorts that provide the defense in depth that has stymied our efforts thus far. They have significant combat power, but like the Titanic they're not too big to sink.

The aviation forces have been forced to flee several of our airbases, Our fleets are simply no match for this display of naval power, and must retreat to the north.

The above path takes the Brazilian and Argentine fleets to a random encounter near the coast, and they detect a submarine during the night by pure happenstance as the submarine is using a RWR-mast. The detection is performed by Brazilian Navy Seahawks.

The submarine track is now lost, but the helicopters are being armed with sonobuyous and torpedos, and they will depart to hunt for the submarine again, from the deck of the NAel Minas Gerais, the Colossus-class carrier.

This encounter will be an experimental DCS mission, using the Seahawk-mod in DCS, and the modded Torpedos and buyos. They work decently, but require some learning and fiddling. The time for the mission will likely be either a weekday evening, or this coming sunday. Those interested in flying the Seahawk mod in it will need to practice some of it, and then discuss with me when the mission can be run!
No other player will be required to install the mod, as it'll be on a branch of the main .miz build.

Here's a DCS video of the anti-submarine action on the mod chopper.

Naval Aviation Orders - 17 MAR 10

Recent combat operations have been very difficult, and the chaotic retreat in the face of overwhelming Chinese numbers has been disheartening. It is clear that our weeks of successful offensives have largely been reset due to this additional threat. The Admiralty is reacting with a re-orientation along the east/west axis, and will be pursuing more limited goals while allied forces regroup and adapt. Defending the few holdings that we still have will be critical to maintaining morale and avoiding a general retreat to the north.

For some good news, the repaired and reinforced ARA Veinticinco de Mayo has sailed south from Puerto Montt and once again re-engaged in combat operations. She will be arriving in the Bay of Alacalufes shortly and combining the power of the Chilean and Ecuadorian fleets. This much-needed reinforcement should help to shore up our western defenses and maintain the threat against the PLA's Punta Arenas offensive.

AO Bolt (Punta Arenas)

Ford Squadron has taken a number of casualties recently in an effort to fend off the tides of Chinese naval might, but it is becoming clear that other solutions will need to be found. Expert piloting and sheer tenacity go a long ways, but the lack of precision guided weaponry or radar-warning receivers is proving to be a deadly combination for these 1960's-era Skyhawks. Rather than continuing to throw lives away against such a massed force, Ford will return to the littoral strikes that they have proven to be excellent at.

This week's target will be the Skyring Sound. The Royal Navy Harriers from Enfield Squadron have worked over the region fairly well, and believed that they had largely cleared out the bay, but there are still reports of ships and marine raiders operating in the region. Your task will be patrolling the sound, identifying any remaining hostiles, and taking them out if possible. Control of the Seno Skyring is critical for protecting Puerto Natales and the nearby FARP Dinibor. The primary targets are as follows:

S1: Small groups of PLAN riverine raiders were previously reported to have been airdropped over the dry gap and attacking up the shallow Rio Primero. Chilean Naval and Coast Guard vessels are defending in the vicinity of WP Diego. Travel along the river and ensure that they remain unchallenged.

S2: Enfield previously delivered a series of attacks against transport vessels and their naval escorts attempting to build a foothold here at the edge of the fjords. They sunk a number of the ships here, but the nearby Lientur Special Operations Company has not yet reported in an all clear. Investigate the current situation and destroy any survivors.

S3: PLAN Marine raiders have been slowly advancing to the northwest, and expanding the scope of the front. If fuel and ordnance permit, then striking those forces should hopefully be enough to put them to flight.

AO Arrow (Rio Gallegos)

Enfield Squadron has been quite effective in slowing the offensive in Punta Arenas, though poor weather conditions have limited the effect of their weaponry. Forecasters predict that this may be ending. The PLAGF 7th Armored BDE is currently making a move against our Rio Gallegos defenders, and we will need your assistance in slowing them down. Taking out the tanks directly will be a difficult job, though the anti-tank forces in the Army are best equipped to do it. Striking against their headquarters, support, engineer, and artillery companies will reduce the enabling forces of the 7th BDE, and give the Army time to get to work.

T1: The 7th BDE support forces are arrayed in something of a line to the southeast. Striking along that axis may provide the best opportunity for successful hits. The Combat Service Support battalion and HQ company are to be considered priority targets.

T2: The heavy armored tanks are driving forward in this region, and appear to have detached from any supporting forces. Blunting that offensive would be a worthwhile mission if conditions permit.

Ford Mission
Search & Destroy

Its like a vacation; where we kill people.

Its been a rough few weeks and it looks like command is giving us a break. Our next sortie should be a relatively routine patrol around the Skyring Sound south of Puerto Natales. The PLAN has be roughed up rather nicely by our Harrier friends but there are still some enemy elements crawling around the area. We are to find them and make them go away.

Flight Plan

Loadout
  • 6x Zuni Pods, 300gal Centerline Tank
  • 30 Chaff, 30 Flares
  • 100% Fuel

Comms
  • Own: 131.5Mhz, 10X/73X
  • Buzzard: 262.00Mhz
  • Home: Puerto Natales (SCNT), 260.00Mhz, VORTAC: 115.90/26X
  • Divert Airfield: Rio Turbio
  • Tanker: N/A

Steerpoints
pre:
	1: DIEGO, S 52° 14' W 72° 32', 10000' @ 300kts
	2: S&D, S 52° 35' W 72° 47', 10000' @ 300kts
	3: S&D, S 52° 32' W 71° 58', 10000' @ 300kts
	4: HOMEPLATE, S 51° 40' W 72° 31', 1000' @ 250kts
Flight Plan
  • Depart Puerto Natales and rendezvous at the mouth of the river south of the airfield.
  • Patrol down river to DIEGO and waypoint 2 attacking identified hostiles.
  • Fuel and weapons permitting, continue patrol past horseshoe island searching for other hostile forces.
  • Return to Puerto Natales.

Notes

  • Puerto Natales is a small field with a lot of jets based at it. We will tune the air tower after start and follow ATC instructions.
  • There is a high possibility of friendly units in close proximity to enemy forces. Identify targets prior to attack.

Chevy Flight Plan
Assets: 2x Su-25T
Flight Frequency: 152.00MHz
ABM Frequency: 262.00MHz
Air Base: Puerto Natales
Loadout: 2xECM, 2xKh25MPU, 2xKh-58U, 4xS-8KOM 1x Phantasmagoria

Intent: Disrupt the PLA Marines crossing at the ferry terminal.

Note: If using the return nav mode Puerto Natales is #12, Rio Gallegos is #4.

We will fly direct from Puerto Natales to PLATE (WP2), aiming for a rapid climb to 6000m. We will orbit PLATE (WP2) until MATADOR is called, then proceed towards WP3. If MATADOR is called we get there we will continue to PLATE and then turn towards WP3. Once departing PLATE we will activate ECM pods, IR dazzlers, and ELINT pods. SA-11s will be priority targets, followed by HQ-7s. Once ARMs are exhausted and assuming no major SAMs are emitting (HQ-7 radars are tolerable) we will search for enemy positions from WP3 Southeast to the ferry terminal and engage them with rockets. Egress is back towards PLATE (WP2) and then to Puerto Natales (WP1, RTN 12). Divert is Rio Gallegos (RTN 4).

The positions of the Type 54 frigates escorting the landing force may complicate SEAD by being on the far side of our targets. Watch for radars unidentified by our ELINT pods and avoid those. It's about 78km from PLATE to the ferry terminal so they're likely to be in range of our Kh-58s as soon as we make the turn. Anything closer is our priority. They may also launch on us as we approach WP3, so exercise caution. If there are no enemy units we can reach without drawing fire from the frigates, we turn for home. Aternately, there may be targets to the West of our target area. We could coordinate with ABM/flights tasked with hitting those and clean up after them (not ideal, but at least we won't be dragging our rockets back home).

Abort conditions:
CAP is down.
We see SAM radars more dangerous than HQ-7s in the area and are out of ARMs.

JOKER at 25% on the fuel gauge, BINGO at 15%.

Expected Threats: Probably SA-11 and HQ-7 SAMs in the area. MANPADS and AAA are liable to be mixed in with enemy ground units, so keep time below 4000m to a minimum and use your flares. We will be in the vicinity of enemy Ropucha-class landing ships and their Type 54 frigate escorts, so don't get too close to the strait itself.

Flt. Lt. Wolfgang Flibberflab
801 Squadron Lead

Listen up my pedigree chums, Lt. Cdr. Fletcher's on some dubiously unmerited 'shore leave' so you're stuck with me on this occasion.

Point of order before we progress, looks like our previous callsign was causing some confusion in the command circles. We wouldn't want to make their lives any more difficult, I heard they ran out of double ply bog roll in their lavvy and rumour has it their biscuit budget has been slashed this year. As such, Vincent will now universally be known as Enfield.

On with business. The Argie Admiral's has us prosecuting more Support services and HQ's, we run the risk of becoming type cast! but we've done it before and done it well so lets make this happen. I expect another clean run, I don't want to be the one explaining to ol' Monty why he's missing airframes, you should see what happened to the last person who took him that message.

The Admiral has proposed a somewhat Yonic looking flight plan for us, it'd be ungentlemanly to refuse.

OBJECTIVE
* Primary target is Combat Support Services battalion and HQ company.
* Secondary/TOO is formation of heavy armoured tanks.

WEATHER
Conditions should be somewhat improved from recent days, hopefully staying dry with cloud base around 8,000ft. Unremarkable wind conditions. Hopefully a bit less bloody sodden at Sophie.

INTEL
"The PLAGF 7th Armoured BDE is currently making a move against our Rio Gallegos defenders, and we will need your assistance in slowing them down. Taking out the tanks directly will be a difficult job, though the anti-tank forces in the Army are best equipped to do it. Striking against their headquarters, support, engineer, and artillery companies will reduce the enabling forces of the 7th BDE, and give the Army time to get to work."

EXECUTION
Approach the objective and survey the targets, no doubt we'll have some air defence to deal with so we'll prioritise those and pick them off with Mavs.

Once the CSS is no more, we'll take stock of remaining fuel and weapons and decide whether or not to prosecute secondaries.

There are blue ground forces in theatre; check and recheck before engaging.

Wp's as follows
  • WP0: FARP Sophie (home plate)
  • WP1: T1 - CSS Batallion/HQ targets
  • WP2: T2 - Enemy armour
  • WP3: FARP Sophie

ARMAMENT
Pilots discretion on this on this one, though I recommend we each have an LMAV or two so we can reach out to any SHORAD near the objective. Otherwise, a mix of bombs and APKWS as you see fit.

NOTES
Laser codes as follows,
  • Enfield 1-1: 1671
  • Enfield 1-2: 1672
  • Enfield 1-3: 1673
  • Enfield 1-4: 1674
