I don't know about extremely dumb. It's entirely relatable. Like yeah, it's entirely true that this country is loving ruined & has been completely ransacked over the last 17/18 years in particular (though honestly the rot started in '79 & more people need to be willing to say that) to the point where the connection between the health of "the economy"™ & 99.5% of people's actual lives has been completely severed. But there's people who do get by on under £20k a year, with families. Doing 35 hours a week on national minimum wage gets you about £19k a year. So if you're earning that, while raising a kid & your partner works part-time while school is on because you can't afford childcare, so 6 hours a day or at weekends? I think you can see why someone wouldn't exactly waste a tear on someone earning 3 times that. Meanwhile an adult living alone without kids on the dole is expected to get by on £9,119.76 a year. People, barely, manage this. Not really sure how, but they do, they have to. And then Scott from Leicestershire is in the top 10% of earners & is claiming he pays too much tax. Cry me a loving river. Lillian from County Durham acknowledges we need public spending but oh, it can't come from those earning £70k a year! Fucksake man, (it's annoyingly hard to find historical income tax bands) in 1973 the highest band was 75% of earnings over £20k, with the basic rate being 30% on earnings below £5k. Which according to the BoE's inflation calculator works out at £50k & £200k respectively. By comparison the top rate for now is 45% on earnings over £125k. People earning £50k+ to £124,999 are paying 45% on those earnings over £50k. And yet aside from a few rock bands pissing off to tax havens in the Harold Wilson years, people survived these outrageous tax rates!

Yes, broadly speaking the problem is that the concentration of wealth in the UK is growing greater & greater, leaving the rest of us behind. The Marxian analysis of their only really being 2 classes when it comes to economics is truer than ever, the people who make poo poo & the exploiters, or the proletariat & bourgeoisie if you prefer 19th century terminology. But the thing is, these people earning £50k & up a year need to realise that they have more in common with the guy behind the till in Tesco than they with the CEO running their company too. The only one in that Guardian article who gives even a hint that he realises how hosed it must be for everyone else if he's struggling is Lee from Surrey. Because an awful lot of what we'll call culturally middle class have no loving interest in class solidarity, are the types of people who are fully signed up to not rocking the boat, of addressing the systemic rot in the system. That spent the 4 years from 2015 to 2019 fully believing that Jeremy Corbyn wanted to murder all the Jews & use their blood to fertilise his allotment or something equally deranged. That looked at a chance for doing something about the rampant inequality in our system (not even much, ultimately Corbyn was still willing to play within the confines of capitalism) & shrugged & decided they'd rather vote for Boris Johnson & chums. I can realise that laughing in their faces at their misfortune is counterproductive, but you can't stop me being angry at them. Like I'm a dumb loving minimum wage worker & I managed to work it out, how can't our university attending betters?

Poor people these days don't have much. Let us have this. I promise I won't be like that to their faces, honey attracts more flies than vinegar etc, but I've only so many of the world's smallest violins to play at once.

based on most statistics these people likely voted labour in 2019 but go off I guess

I think the posts of "if I was on £70k" are forgetting he's the soul breadwinner of a family of 4.

That families have the choice of both parents working but child care costing THOUSANDS of £ a month or one partner just not working at all, is an issue facing people all different classes and incomes (well except the super rich).

To be honest that is my main problem with the article. There's several valid issues due to recent government policy/inaction that affect everyday people of all incomes, potentially including that first family:
  • Saving mortgage deposits, and mortgages being unrealistic for much of the country
  • Lack of emergency funds
  • Student 'loan' system
  • Costs of childcare
  • Tax traps; effective tax rates above 60% for some families

However the article skips past most of that. The writer obviously started with a premise that tax rates are too high and worked backwards finding examples to justify simplistic (and possibly vote-winning) tax cuts. I'm sure they could have found someone earning £74k who was still stuck renting unable to save up a house deposit, or a higher-earning single parent unable to both work & access child benefit.

But instead their opening example is this because the goal of the article isn't to highlight any of the root causes of problems in the country or make people's lives better, it's to divert attention away from policies that might.

If you're losing the comfortable professionals then who is even left to support the interparty Tory consensus apart from landlords and pensioners?

UK wages are just absurdly low overall. Every now and then I wonder how it would look to move back home, and for me it would entail something like a 40-50% drop in salary, while the cost of living somewhere I'd actually find work is only about 10-15% lower (rent and transport likely cost more, food, household stuff and services cost less, utilities probably comparable). And I'd end up paying more tax, with much worse public services and working conditions.

Okay, so this is something that has come up twice now from people talking about the Guardian Article.

Saying "just downsize your car or get a cheap second hand car" is a justifiable position, when you are just a singleton who looks after yourself and maybe a pet.

When you have kids, literally everything terrifies you on some level that it will in some way kill your kids.
That sliced chicken that is one day past it's best before date? I'll be fine to eat that.
But give it to your kid? Hell no, they could get sick.

This also applies to cars. When you have kids, you want a safe car. That means you are reluctant to get a car that's too cheap, for fear it's a death trap. Then you have to look at a larger car that can hold you kids. And you want a car that is safer for the kids to be in.

It's one of the reasons there are so many SUV's out there.

Just saying "just downsize in cars" isn't necessary helpful as you are probably comparing your personal situation to his. Much like what the elderly are doing when they say stuff like "just save and get a house. That's what I did in the 70's! Why can't you?"

And the safety poo poo bugs me too, we run the cars we can afford even if we have kids. Ban SUVs instead and make large cars too expensive for most to own, that'd be safer for all the people not affording new SUVs and who don't want to participate in this loving arms race of cars. loving new cars. This is exactly where we're at. There is a reason so much is being done around childcare. It's because the last remnants of the Tory vote under 50 are struggling and that is a major cost for that demographic.

The age crossover for likelihood of Labour vs Tory voting is now 68 (!!! and also lol).

Edit: Can I add as well how openly sexist our system still is. The reason 75k bloke's wife doesn't work is likely because there is simply no point. She can't out earn the childcare costs. She'll have to go back to work later but the decision to have kids will likely hugely impact her career.

Yeah SUVs are a bit like handguns in that if you buy one to protect your kids the thing that just got much more likely to harm them is the thing you just bought. There's too many tragic things that can go wrong when you can't see a 3 foot tall profile in front of you.

She said: “There is literally no money in renting out property now. Most landlords are covering all the costs involved, including any mortgage and the cost of all repairs.

“Many are operating at a loss. The system for taxable income on buy-to-let homes needs to change. Many landlords are keeping people in homes and keeping the rental market going, often in very difficult circumstances. They need more support. Landlords should be incentivised to stay in the market. Incentives for landlords would also help alleviate the shortfall in rental properties in popular areas.”

I barely break even at the end of the month, I don't have savings or a first pension, and more importantly going out and luxuries come out of the 'any spare money' part of our budget.

It's people complaining "I don't have much to spare after necessities and luxuries," when there's people with more of an "I can't afford necessities, let alone luxuries" vibe out there.

I'm a big believer that socialism shouldn't mean people can't have nice things, but as Guava pointed out some people have a very warped definition of what 'nice things' are.

It's particularly galling when it's MPs and middle managers complaining about their £80k salary when there are people treading water working under them on £20-30k. Like if you can't afford poo poo, how the hell do you think your employees are dealing with everything?

Apparently before they brought tomatoes back from the new world, ketchup was made with mushrooms, and as there are some mushrooms you can only eat once without ketchuping them, and tomatoes looked as though they ought to be as toxic as the more well known British nightshades, the only culinary thing in Britain that was done with them for quite a while was turning them into a sauce with vinegar.

Mushroom ketchup is good on pies though.

LIVARPOOL!

Klopp's 13pts clear thanks to video ref

Been a few articles and tweets over the last couple of days about the prospect of a May 2nd general election (same time as the Locals). Sunak would have to announce this at the end of the month, possibly the 22nd or the 25th, to dissolve Parliament in time.

Normal convention would say that the ruling party destined to be obliterated at the polls should hold onto power for as long as possible. However, the argument against this convention is:

* The polls are going to get much, much worse for Sunak
* The number of illegal immigrants (or more accurately asylum seekers arriving here entirely legally) is going to stay high and potentially get higher, which does not help Sunak's "I stopped the boats!" message
* The economy is likely to continue to tank
* A very poor showing at the local elections may lead Sunak to be ousted before the election happens, therefore he has a vested interest at calling it now so at least he can say he's in charge

We've talked in the thread before about how it's been fairly common knowledge that this will happen. Tory sources are obviously denying it and saying they're in no rush at all, Labour ministers are going on morning shows and placing bets (only a tenner) that it will. I'm not sure what the Lords timetable on the Rwanda bill is, but if they send that back (unless they already have? it wasn't clear from the reporting) I expect that would factor into Rishi's plans. Being able to fight his election on stopping the boats before the numbers get worse for him is at least... something.
