Übel's logic on how her cutting magic works is perfectly logical to me. To me the others saying she's insane tells me that they don't understand magic as well as she does in a pure way.

Magic is all about visualizations, if you can believe in something hard enough, it comes true. Simple stuff is best because it's stronger the more completely you visualize the thing. A spell that simply cuts could be the strongest magic of all, no wonder it cuts through anything she can picture it cutting through.

That poor cloak guy though, I guess that's what you get for neglecting your basic defenses.

I mean, he didn't neglect his basic defenses; that's the thing. He was literally a master specialist at basic defenses.

I think the implication here is that just being ignorant isn't good enough. It's meaningless to be able to visualize yourself as cutting through the impenetrable cloak if you don't actually know enough magic to understand why it's impenetrable. In order to do what Ubel did, you have to actually understand how the defensive spells woven into the cloth function and still be able to visualize yourself slicing through it, and that's why most people can't hack it.

It's funny that everybody's like "you can't do that" when they're talking about magic like they aren't already doing poo poo that inherently defies logic.

Mages should be required to take creative writing classes or something.

Denken said it well, she intellectually understands it, but goes through her intuition instead, which is just not how normal minds work. As Sense said it’s basically a super power.

Ubel also has her empathetic magic copying which is something that also doesn’t follow the normal way for mages.

I prefer the manga translation which uses inhuman instead of super power. Highlights that she's basically a human-demon or anti-demon. However you want to think of it.

A friend told me a story about being 3 or 4 years old and getting up in the morning to make herself eggs. Her mom came down halfway through and told her she can't do that. She remembers distinctly thinking, "Well, I was doing it, so you're wrong."

My friend woulda been a good mage.

If my kid was actually halfway through making eggs, I'd just teach how to do it safely, tell them to ask for an adult to watch whenever they do and then have them make some for me too to demonstrate they understood.

I think my favorite thing is that out of every single thing that ever happened to her, mimics are the one thing that causes Frieren to lose her cool.

Even though the lightshow was fantastic, I'm still kind of sad that they didn't use a Mimic to trap the fake Frieren, especially when there was conversation from Fern wondering if the clones had the same behavioral weaknesses.

Ubel is playing chess while other mages are playing checkers. Or I guess since her thing kinda works on a more simple logic, she's actually the one playing checkers while other mages overthink and play chess.

I've always likened Ubel as someone that instinctively understands cooking. Like if she spends enough time around someone making a pilaf, she knows enough about cooking as a concept to then make a decent one herself.

This is contrasted to other mages who would learn cooking by reading/following recipes.

I immediately thought “Richter would ace this he’d just flip over the earth he’s standing on” and realized that was probably the entire point of the test. Robe guy was probably all self satisfied thinking about how he’d created such a clever puzzle only those with truly first class intellects will solve right before he was cut in half.
