JP really said "gently caress it, just keep releasing more Painkiller", what a contrast to the recent Iron Maiden borefests.

New Sonata Arctica is… not bad actually. They leaned hard into their early pm style, and California and Defiled Angel both sound like they could be on one of their first 4 albums. Reminds me a lot of Winterheart’s Guild.

Iron Maiden is all like run to the hills and Judas Priest is Rob Halford's other band besides Fight. I think I saw this on headbanger's ball in the early 90s before it got cancelled. Skjorte posted:No Prayer and Fear of the Dark are Maiden at their absolute worst, with Bruce turning in inexplicably bad performances considering how much better his subsequent solo output would go on to be. Somewhere In Time and Powerslave are Maiden's best. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is insane, love that classically trained metal. It sucks that the Blaze era didn't figure things out until Brave New World when Bruce came back. BNW nailed the "repeat chorus for the rest of the song" formula and it's cool seeing the two styles of Maiden mesh like that. We still got "Sign of the Cross" at least which is the best Blaze track even if that means his era is ridiculously frontloaded.

British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance are the two albums most of their big hits are from and a good starting point.

For me, best 70s Priest is Stained Class. Exciter is one of the best metal songs period. Sad Wings of Destiny has great songs as well. The album as a whole is pretty good but nothing compared to Stained Class, Killing Addiction / Hellbent or Sin After Sin. My favorite 80s Priest is Defenders of the Faith. Has the appeal of British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance with songs that are more aggressive. Painkiller is obviously top tier Priest and easily one of the best heavy metal albums of all time. The only Priest records I don't like that much are Ram It Down, Turbo and while Ripper Owens is a great vocalist, I didn't really care for those two albums he was on after Halford left.
