I'm extremely happy Poor Things, Godzilla, and Zone of Interest each won stuff last night flashy_mcflash posted:I'm not saying it's full-on horror I will say it's horror, and so are the other two I mentioned. Getting to see both of the latter two with theater sound systems gently caress

I rewatched House of the Devil before the Oscars yesterday. It's still probably my favorite Ti West movie (not saying it's the best), it's just one of those movies with an incredible vibe to it throughout the whole thing. Tom Noonan definitely helps elevate it, too. He's like if the Tall Man from Phantasm was kind of socially awkward and uncomfortable with everything going on around him.

Noonan's great as always, I just always thought that bit where she wakes up and tries to escape was a little too much. Innkeepers fell into that trap more.

I have a suspicion based on nothing in particular that Criterion might have the rights and will release it along with the Minus Color edition. In the end I don't really care who distributes it; I just want it!

That's definitely the weakest part (and my wife completely hates that part, she said it took her out of the entire movie for a bit) but I think the rest of the movie is so drat good and suspenseful that I'm willing to forgive it getting crazy go nuts over the top for a bit. I also enjoy it a lot more than The Innkeepers but that might just be my personal taste and how much I can relate to the main characters. I've been a poor college student who would have taken that job to try and make rent. I've had a lovely roommate that I just wanted to get away from. I've never worked a job like in the Innkeepers, though. So even though I really liked the characters, they didn't click the same way.

Knowing how much this thread likes The Raven: The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini is a fun horror-comedy where protagonist Boris Karloff, from beyond the grave, tries to defend his rightful heirs from dastardly lawyer Basil Rathbone. Also, Nancy Sinatra sings a bunch of songs because there is a beach blanket party going on in front of the old dark house for little apparent reason. It's on Prime. I discovered it from an article that was rather dismissive of Rathbone's later works.

Poor Things was going so hard for a Tim Burton vibe that it was hard to ignore that it's considerably less weird than Pee Wee's Big Adventure, a widely beloved children's movie

Women were also largely responsible for the film's casting, art design, costuming, the parts of the film that are its most exceptional. Plus Emma Stone herself. I just think dismissing it with "it was made by men" (not just here I've seen this a lot since last night) erases a huge number of people that made the film what it is
