Yeah, it's really noticeable with Cloud that all of his synergy skills work great at filling up other characters' ATBs. The giant cleave attack or bullet smash attacks are great for that, but for some other characters their synergy skills aren't spammable in the same way since they have a different function (like Tifa and Yuffie).

Yeah I've stayed away from things like Auto-Weapon Ability because generally I want to be in control of when and how ATB is spent, especially in the absence of something like the gambit system to offer passive direction to the AI. I'm sure they're reasonably smart about things but I'd still prefer to just control that kind of resource expenditure on my own.

I posted this about before but based on my short experiment the AI seemed a little too passive and this a problem when you want those synergy abilities asap.

I think this is because the AI is programmed to use abilities in optimal situations but it can only use 4 shortcuts so that leaves out a lot of good abilities.

Auto unique however is very good on most characters because triangle skills dont cost ATB and they AI will use them as much as possible

It's great for Tifa but with Barret I found it ran into the problem of him blowing Overcharge while he had full ATB and since Overcharge is so great at building ATB that's a huge waste.

Having someone with auto-cast heal materia is very good and saved my bacon a lot because I am bad at paying attention to my health bars

And Tifa having auto-ability so she'll boost her chi levels is great

But yeah you should generally be cycling through characters

Speaking of abilities, something I've just started using and went "wait why have I not been doing this" is Haste, haste is so drat good in this game.

Sockser posted:

I'm real lame with it; Every person has Healing material in my party, and I have Auto-Cast Healing on my non-active characters at all times. I almost never have to heal manually, if at all. It does feel kind of cheap though; I just don't really feel like managing the healing, which is funny because I exclusively play support and healing characters in World of Warcraft.

Did the Arbiters/whispers save Biggs? We've only seen Biggs in the "other timeline," which seems to imply he's still dead in our timeline.

My interpretation is that the whispers were just trying to enforce the original sequence of events. Why they would do that isn't entirely clear to me - I guess you could argue that Jenova (manipulating the pre-Rebirth whispers according to my speculation) is playing a long game that requires the events of OG FF7, and IIRC bits of Jenova are still hanging around after Advent Children.

They're shown to fly around him and his surroundings shift from a battle to nothing going on. Actually, it's kind of weird that in Remake all the whispers are just hovering above all of the Avalanche members (and Wedge in Rebirth) before they scatter as you get close. I wonder if that means something.

Yes, they traded an interesting, complex, multi-actor, multi-motivation story about rebelling against higher political, institutional, ultimately human powers that have treated people like worthless tools since time immemorial for just another boringstory about rebelling against a higher singular power that has treated people like worthless tools since time immemorial (while wearing goth eyeliner).

I'm being a little glib but everything they build up in the beginning is cheapened by the final act. Everything, even the politics, comes down to one guy, who acts like a cliche and literally invokes the first game, who pulled all the strings and controlled everything you thought was a complex interaction of good and flawed people, and whose death sets it all right. It is a story about a protracted moral atrocity whose true horror comes from it being inflicted on humans by other humans, discarding the respect of their shared humanity, rather than by uncaring forces of nature or chance, but which instead reimagines it as coming from god, who never cared in the first place, and tells us all those people were actually good and normal until god brainwashed them, and that they are not responsible for the system they inhabit because it was all built for them by god. It is a story that spends a lot of time setting up complicated arrangements and explaining them and making sure we have the tools to understand how it works and how it changes between chapters, and then throws it all in the garbage.

Does this game expect you to have a full materia load out for everyone at once? Just curious because it's always switching the active members around.

That is confusing me because the game seems to want you to control one main character and then give the other two active but uncontrolled characters all of the materia they need to do their loving jobs

Like auto cast, auto unique ability, etc etc

So yeah are you supposed to fill everyone out with materia or switch it based on the active people? Also why do I need to give my guys materia just so they'll loving do basic things, it's so weird

The auto materias are good for most fights but in the end I fought best when playing it how I did in Remake: swapping characters whenever I was hit, in a long animation or recovery animation. Auto materia helps thing's like Tifa and Barret not need to be babysit too much but I never found the AI to work well with a full auto setup

I did setup everyone with a full materia setup because it's easy enough to identify which materia benefits what character the most

Honestly I feel like it's inevitable that they'll end up remaking most of the series - 5, 6, and 8 would be incredible, 9 probably needs it the least since the art direction still holds up and wouldn't really suit the hyper-realistic approach anyway - though that fan project to remake it is gorgeous and retains the art style well enough, so it could definitely be done.

There are two Gold Saucer segments if you remember from the original, the official date-date happens when you go back the second time. I don't think you get an active pick, I'm not there yet either, but you still have time if you want to change some of the relationship levels.

The Nibel region is such a relief after Cosmo Canyon. It's just kind of breezy and short, the enemies aren't a huge pain in the rear end and it's easy to knock out objectives quickly. I love its version of the world map music too.

I'm getting ready to roll into Chapter 12, I think. Feels like the game is building towards a big climax and I'm definitely here for it. For all the random tiny complaints I have about the game, the overall package is pretty stellar and genuinely impressive in places. The wait for the next game will probably be unbearable.

dodging his attacks or landing special moves on him will psyche him up, tanking hits and playing defense will disappoint him and make him end the fight early. basically just keep tearing into him, with yuffie or barret on hand so that you can hit him with specials without worrying about Reprisal

This is a guess, but it feels like both dodging his attacks and also doing enough damage are required. It feels very DPS check-y.

The assess text is misleading, debuffs on their own don’t affect whether he uses Zantetsuken or not. The only thing that actually matters is that you deal lots of damage to Odin and avoid as much damage as possible (people have peeked at the code to confirm this)
debuffs still help in that they can increase the amount of damage you deal and decrease how much you take but that’s it.

Anecdotally on my three attempts, blocking stuff the first two times led him to doing his enrage (the second time I tried to cheese it with Phoenix reraise on multiple party members).

The third time, I tried to actively avoid the hits entirely by pre emptively moving and that made him get into pressured state pretty quickly.
