Nah, rent is bullshit because it's literal theft by extortion. Even if it cost much less and never increased, you would still be paying for someone else to own something. If you go into a shop and pay for something and then someone else picks it up and walks out with it, that's theft. But if you pay for someone else's house and then they keep it and throw you out, that's rent. It's bullshit.

If you can buy.

This is what I always wonder when people talk about their cats trying to sit on their keyboard or whatever else. Just don't let it? They're much smaller than you. You can easily push them around. I've owned cats and yeah, they tried to do stuff that annoyed me and I just didn't let them so they gave up and stopped trying because it didn't work.

There's really nothing wrong with the concept of renting a place - if something breaks you call the landlord and they fix it. You generally don't have to do any yardwork or maintenance. And if you need/want to move you don't have to deal with getting rid of your existing place. But like a lot of things, it gets hosed up by greed and a lack of regulations so people end up paying out the rear end for a shithole.

I lucked the gently caress out with my house. Bought in 2003 just before everything went apeshit and paid 90k. The house itself isn't huge, 800sf but it's perfect for a single person. The yard is big, it has hardwood floors and a fireplace, all the things that were on my dream list. Originally the interest rate was 5%, which was a tad higher than the going rate at the time because I went through a local nonprofit that does stuff for first time homebuyers. It cost me $500 to move in. I refi'd in late 2021 right before everything went to poo poo again, got some cash out so I can do some yard improvements and that interest rate is 2%; again right before everything went to poo poo and shot up to 7. I feel super bad for anyone trying to buy a home for the first time now, my place appraised for 450 loving K when I refi'd. Benefits me sure but who the gently caress could afford that on a normal person's salary? You'd have to be DINK and earning way above median wage around here.

I don't know where you live but that's definitely not the case here. You have to maintain the yard to the standard it was when you moved in. If you're lucky, it's a complete mess and you can do what you like. If you're unlucky, it's actually nice and will cost you time and money on top of your rent.

But it has happened. Lots of places DID have regulation and rent control. Most of Europe still has it ( although it's slowly being dismantled there too)

The concept of renting is fine, it's just the current implementation where capitalism has been allowed to run riot in the USA, Canada and UK.

I mean, in principle, yes, when you rent what you are paying for is for someone else to deal with installing and maintaining critical furnishings, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades on the property, dealing with the deluge of paperwork involved in owning land, solving the terrible riddle of finding the single plumber in the city who both does good work and returns calls ever, etc, and all of that stuff is a gigantic headache so I can definitely see the appeal.

Of course, in reality, the landlord has strong financial incentives to take your rent and do jack poo poo, because even if you get fed up with the fact that the toilet hasn't worked for a month and the fridge emits a horrible screaming noise every hour, they can always find someone else to rent to for whom "broken toilet and demon fridge" is still better than the alternative. And if you complain, they have all the money and are thus in a better position to out-lawyer you or just do a regulatory capture about it.

Growing up in SOCIALISM this was the way: almost all (new at least) real-estate was owned by companies, that were in turn owned by their workers or the state. You got "tenants' rights" which was a long-term very-low-or-no-fee rent that was closer to ownership than rental. Everybody signed up for a "list" to get one of those, and you moved up or down the list depending on seniority and the size of your and other families and thus needs. Everything was categorized by size and made to match those needs, so when new building was built or an apartment was moved out of, whoever is on the list got it next. Rinse, repeat. Of course, there were some issues like the demand always outpacing the supply, and some corruption in the process, but those sticky bits are unavoidable when dealing with mushy humans. Then, capitalismfeudalism came back. :(

Animals are just like children in that if you acquiesce or appease them then they will take advantage of you fwiw so every time you complain about an animal doing thing you don’t like it’s because you didn’t train it not to and/or don’t remain consistent and firm with the training.

So just be sure to blame yourself.

Yeah, I'm just splitting hairs, but the reality is they still have your rear end over a barrel if you have any financial hardship at all. Name on the house means fuckall when they can still gently caress you about anyway. Mortgage still better than rent imo, not like the landlord is gonna fix poo poo properly/at all in my experience. I've had maybe 2 decent ones in 20 years, there's no way in hell I'd ever rent again.

Plumber? Good work? My landlord has a family friend who can do basic plumbing & maintenance and will always buy the absolute cheapest replacement parts possible. It's undoubtedly breaking some law to get an unlicenced dude to do the plumbing & gas & electrical work in a rental property but what the gently caress can I do about it?
I often end up doing a lot of the minor repairs myself because I know I'll take way more care over it than that guy

Also my landlord has contracted a real estate agency to handle the rent collection + renter applications + most of the necessary paperwork and legal stuff
