One thing about Persona 5 is that it’s very specifically criticizing Japanese society rather than global fascism or whatever the more politics-brained people expected. Some of the villains are loosely based on actual news stories from over there and the last dungeon (and the overall prison theme) is about the bad sides of Japan’s collectivism, like the work culture and willingly being a cog in the machine. The public turns a blind eye to the villains’ actions because nobody wants to stand out or have to think about it, like a kind of bystander effect.

Of course the solution ends up being blowing up the deity representing all that and going “ok cool maybe stuff will get better now” but I guess that’s just how most Persona games are.

I don't see how any of that counters any of the criticisms of the game since I don't think anybody expected it to be a criticism of fascism, and that's really only a small part of the game anyway

Also the criticism it does have of a facsist leader is insanely shallow and stupid. The metaphor they use for it is that of a giant ship being literally steered in the wrong direction, come on

Like there's unsubtle and then there's that. They're not even unsubtle in service of making sure to drive a point home, they chose to make it a literal cruise ship being steered over a waterfall or something (it's been a while since I played it) because their criticism is fundamentally braindead

For anyone who is equally confused, I saved you a Google. It just means DCing (e.g. unplugging your Ethernet cord) when your opponent is about to win and you're about to lose. Relevant because W/L counters are a thing, also matchmaking so you can just avoid losing to climb rank.

I haven't tried to play a fighting game in some 15 years and I don't want to claim to be smarter than a game dev or something but I feel like it would be really easy to prevent this phenomenon by simply making it so that if you DC it counts as a loss for you and a win for your opponent. Like that seems like the easy counterplay here and I'm not sure why you wouldn't do that.

You could say it makes it easy to throw rank to smurf against newbies but it's also easy to, you know, AFK at your controller

yeah i think "Steered" is the thing that actually prompts them to find the correct keyword lol

anyway i think the obvious complaint is that if you are going to put in outlines of political commentary in your game, you should probably do something more interesting with it than just say "corrupt adults are bad" or something.

The first arc of P5 is incredibly compelling stuff, unfortunately each successive arc is progressively less so

i think it is pretty well documented that the game had a badly tortured production which is probably also why the english localization is considerably below Atlus's usual standards.

it wouldn't really surprise me if the stuff in the first arc was written at a significantly different time than a lot of the rest of the game

yes, other games do that. this is one of those things that tekken 8 is weirdly behind the times about.

More games should have annoying dungeon traversal puzzles. Atlus toning them down in Royal and in that SMTV patch is a sign of developer cowardice

Cruise ship was weird for same reason spaceship was because all of the other ones are themed around heist movie settings. Art Museum, Bank, Pyramid (grave robbers are p famous), Casino, Castle (Lupin III goes to castles a lot including his most famous adventure Cagliostro where it’s in the literal title)

Then cruise ship??? And spaceship??? What famous heist stories took place on a UFO?

I mean its specifically a Star Wars pastiche and uh a New Hope is built around an offscreen heist (which we see in Rogue One) and a undercover rescue on the Death Star.
