I would say probably the former, as we know COVID infects endothelial cells that form the lining of blood vessels. It makes sense that COVID perforating the walls causes leakage.

UK Guidance for the Public: Minimize Contact with Wild Birds

CDC Guidance

#17,955

Today the UK government has published guidance for the public to avoid or minimize contact with wild birds.

quote:

While its release may be linked - at least in part - to the recent rise in `Parrot Fever' cases being reported in Europe (see WHO DON Update & Risk Assessment On Psittacosis In Europe), many migratory birds are now heading north for the summer, and the risks of spreading avian flu to humans - while low - are not zero.

There are suspicions that Chile's human H5N1 case from early 2023 was infected via shorebirds near where he lived, and just a few days ago we looked at a seroprevalence study from Borneo which found evidence that HPAI H5 may have spread to humans via migratory birds.

quote:

While we've seen general advice to avoid contact with wild birds before (see CDC guidance), today's release from the UK is perhaps the most detailed to date.  It stresses avoiding contact, and if that isn't possible, the value of wearing of PPEs (gloves, eye protection & masks, etc.), and the importance of post-contact disinfection.

While the risks to humans from infected birds remains quite low, that risk is arguably higher for dogs and cats which roam outside (see Netherlands: Utrecht University Study Of Stray & Domestic Cats For Evidence Of HPAI H5N1 Exposure).

quote:

While it is still a long-shot that H5N1 will spark a pandemic, we have entered a `new normal'; one which demands we adjust and adapt to this constantly evolving threat, or risk suffering the consequences.

Sometimes I wonder if I should just give in and stop masking when I have to go into the office (which thankfully is pretty rare for me).

But then, one of my (remote) coworkers has been sick for a couple of weeks. They were starting to feel better, so they decided to go through with hosting a family gathering. Her dad got COVID from it and had to be hospitalized for pneumonia. She insisted this was ultimately a good thing because it convinced him that he needs to be taking his Parkinson's more seriously, because of his overall fragile health.

Another coworker's grandson missed his christening because he and his family had COVID. But apparently he's a really tough baby, so it's all fine.

These loving people. NEVER STOP WEARING A MASK.

you'd be surprised at which one gets less flack. nobody fucks with you if something confusing enough is on your face. and then the initial two seconds of confusion dissipate as soon as you start talking normally and they hear your intentions and address them. and then it's a normal interaction

Trader Joe’s recalls some cashews in 16 states due to salmonella risk

www.cnn.com - Tue, 19 Mar 2024 posted:

Trader Joe’s is recalling select cashews from stores in 16 states because they may be contaminated with salmonella, the specialty grocer said Sunday.

The affected 50% Less Salt Roasted and Salted Whole Cashews are sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Only four lots are recalled, Trader Joe’s said. Packages that are best before February 21, 2025; March 1 2025; March 8 2025; and March 10, 2025 are affected.

The California-based, privately-owned grocer, which operates more than 500 stores in 43 states, said no illnesses have been reported yet. Customers who bought the affected products should throw them away or return to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.

Earlier this month, 61,000 pounds of the brand’s popular steamed chicken soup dumplings were recalled due to possible contamination with hard plastic from a permanent marker. Last year, Trader Joe’s issued a cookie recall because some cookies because might contain rocks.

lmao. My wife is getting her annual physical this morning and just texted that 4 different people asked if she was sick because of the mask, lol. And there are now signs in the facility emphasizing that masks aren't required unless you're sick. Perfect logic, save the preventative measure for after you're already ill. Never mind that she's in remission for an autoimmune illness.

I know it's been said, but seriously feels like living in a Twilight Zone ep. We woke up in a world where being sick is "normal" and wanting to stay healthy makes people keep their distance from you.
