I feel like a genre that boasts both a movie called The Gate and a beloved character called the Cryptkeeper would be more welcoming to gatekeepers but y'all ain't ready for that conversation

And as a bonus, The Gate loving rules. Like a feature length Goosebumps book played totally straight, with a lil' babby Stephen Dorff. Lots of amazing stopmotion monster effects too.

Being a gate keeps people from straying. Being straight keeps people from gaying. Makes you think.

Agreeing with the empty quote here. Horror can be a lot of things, that's what I was kind of getting at here. I'm the last one to say "that's not horror". Justin Godscock fucked around with this message at 23:46 on Mar 19, 2024 |

August Underground is available for rent on YouTube so I watched it. It's really more of a dark comedy than anything.

I wonder how far afield you can get, what movie could you make an actual argument for being horror but if you did you would annoy people because it's obviously not horror.

Pope Corky the IX posted:I'm still slowly making my way through Fall of the House of Usher (watching it with a friend whenever we get together) and I feel like the show is losing track of what's going on at this point. Like there are one too many plot threads that are actually making things more convoluted than they need to be. I just finished "Goldbug" (sixth episode?) and the scene where Mark Hamill comes in with a stack of photographs portraying Carla Gugino hanging out with everyone from Mark Zuckerberg to the Vanderbilts was only saved by the performances. I wasn’t a huge fan of this overall, I think Flanagan kinda lost the plot at some point and just wanted to showcase his stable of actors doing stuff. It wasn’t awful or anything but a series that has Carl Lumbly and Mark Hamill in it is tailor made for me, but it felt like it dragged a lot by the end. I think it also got a bit hung up on constantly reminding us money is bad. Yeah, I know, I don’t need this huge monologue about how shutting down Hollywood for a year or whatever would fix all these issues. It felt very over the top since Flanagan is (I assume) much wealthier and powerful than I’ll ever be, but he’s presenting these ideas like the average person isn’t already aware of that.

The Catfish movie, the one that spawned the show, is ultimately about a man discovering he’s been conversing online with someone who does not exist. Instead, he’s stumbled upon a fictional person created by a lonely, socially isolated woman. He is unaware of this until he travels across the country to meet the woman he thinks exists.

I've seen people snap at others about Poor Things recently for being bloodless horror, even though it's literally a take on Frankenstein (and opens with a suicide victim being further tortured by being resurrected against their will)

I watched Poor Things last night. That first third is literally just Universal Frankenstein, there's a whole bunch of sleaze and unnerving horror involving Mark Ruffalo's character, the climax is full of dread until the finale, which is medical horror. It's a whimsical dark fantasy and it has splashes of great humor, but it counts.

Id avoid the Maggot Cut, it doesnt really add anything besides sexual assault/child murder, despite its claim it develops Maggot as a character it really doesnt. If the content (not the gore but the sexual assaults and stuff) bother you id still reccomend to skip through and find the gore scenes, bc I know you love SFX and they are truly beyond impressive. I pick up people and embalm them everyday and if I didnt know it was a fake movie id believe it was real. def want to know what you think!!
