Frontpage was a mix of people with realistic understandings of what the gig was and some people who thought they were turning it into a thriving social media career

The movie review crew in particular really thought they were taking over the internet with their terrible reviews.

Not only did Jeffrey offer to make him whole, he had no obligation to since he did not purchase Lowtax's debts and made the offer only because he felt bad for the people Lowtax ripped off.

That, over the course of only a few months, turned into someone writing long screeds about how rude and unprofessional Jeff was because "hmm I didn't remember it like that, but did you make the offer to anyone else?" and literally zero reflection from the OP.

did like the writers ever get paid

you can tell this was an aspiring front page article writer because they use 10k words to explain "no I didn't get paid, sucks I wanted to work and stay"

BoldFrankensteinMir posted:

He did not! We all got stuck for thousands of dollars of unpaid fees and the only message Jeffrey has answered since was to tell me "I don't have your money, get it out of Richard" in a very curt turn. He doesn't have to pay us so he didn't, and that was it. I don't feel bad disclosing this because it was not a business-like conversation at all. It really disappointed me, because he had seemed like an okay guy to work with before that, but after the sale he wouldn't even acknowledge any of us anymore. The way he handled it was thuggish, and unprofessional, and rude.

But you want to know what's really messed up? Many of us were willing to come back anyway! I know, it's incredibly stupid, but that's the power of low standards in employment for you. If the conditions had been even just a little bit better (keeping up on the fees, actually having a real store to sell prints of article art in, no gross toilet-humor in phone meetings with the editor-in-chief as he drives around in the leased sports-car he embezzled from your opaque budget; little things!) a bunch of writers and artists would have forfeited their back-pay and stayed. Some of them are still hanging on in the Slack channel last I checked, and I don't blame them. An audience is a rare and precious resource, especially when it's people in your own community that you care about. I admit, when Jeffrey told me I was poo poo out of luck on collecting back-pay, I offered to forget it too. I said I'd come back and write Comedy Goldmine or Photoshop Phridays or even both again, if he just actually paid me a fair wage for it, and I'd write off Richard's theft as a loss, and not hold it against the new management. I never heard back, which I took as a no. Like I said, not a business discussion. Just a man telling me "I ain't got yer money" and walking away.

Keep in mind, we were promised forty bucks an article which we had to split with the illustrator. We're not talking about a lot of money here, considering the amount of work we did. A lot of those articles had days of work by multiple people poured into them. Even Phridays and Goldmines took half a day at least to assemble with our horrible CMS, with an assistant helping me I couldn't always keep up on the weekly schedule it was so much work. But even our very cheap fees were never paid, we all got robbed of years of back-wages that had been justified with lies about the business's profitability, and nobody cared. It was a really sad way for the thing to end.

I think everybody has sort of given up on the Front Page already, which sucks, but I can't bring myself to get in the way of it anymore. I love it to pieces but if I can't even give the work away that's just too pathetic even for a freelance writer to take. And we take a lot of pathetic jobs, let me tell you. If we had real contracts with real payment schedules on them for the Front Page, you know, basic competence? It would be a totally different idea. But everybody's way more interested in under-the-hood things here in the forums, which is cool, though I notice they seem to have no real deadlines associated with them, at least not ones that are transparent. That's how I know "the Front Page might be considered after all of these vague goals" is not a real timetable, it's a nod to the yet-to-be-executed prisoner still in the room. Between that and how little he valued our work or even being professional with us, I think it's pretty clear Jeffrey's just waiting for a quiet moment to kill the Front Page for good. I just wish he'd get it over with because I really loved that publication and the people involved and it's excruciating for all of us to watch something we loved standing in the gallows while a crowd throws fruit.

It is still absolutely amazing to me just how hard the FP crew worked last spring to try and turn it into the real public-facing hub we all know it ought to be, but there was just never any support, ever. A dozen people busting their asses to promote and preserve this community's creative output, because you all know Imgur is gonna die and take our entire legacy with it, right? That Phridays and Goldmines are our only backup of many of those images, and there are currently no serious suggestions for alternatives? The Front Page team were amazing workhorses with sincere reverence for their community, and I will be proud for the rest of my life to have worked with such amazing people. But at the same time I will always be astonished to have seen so many devoted people working so hard just to be treated so badly, by their bosses, by their audience, by their own drat community they were trying to help. It really was heart-breaking when we all found out Lowtax had never intended to pay any of us and nobody cared. Writers and artists with kids, people working real hard for table-scraps that they really needed, and yet ultimately all they got was "there's a front page!?" and a kick in the butt for all their efforts. It was a nightmare even without considering the other, more atrocious abuses going on even further behind the scenes.

So yeah, sure, it could work if we did it right this time, but it always would have worked if we'd done it right. Lowtax was the textbook parasite-publisher for at least the decade I worked for him. There was no point in the Front Page's recent history where it wasn't dancing the best it could despite a 260-pound parasitic twin growing out of its rear end and gobbling up all the nutrients as expensive cookies. At any stage a very reasonable injection of resources or just some basic support from the readers would have done wonders. We were never unprofitable, that was a gigantic lie we all swallowed for years. Hell, we weren't even allowed to set up a pledge drive for ourselves during the 20th anniversary, turns out because Lowtax was afraid it would take money away from his patreons which turned out to be slush-funds, the fink. The only thing that ever stopped us from having an incredibly cool and valuable Front Page is criminal mismanagement, and we were even able to limp along somewhat respectfully despite that hobbling disability. It's profoundly sad to think of all the opportunities to promote and grow these forums through the Front Page we had, that got stifled again and again by embezzlement and then were thrown away without ever getting a single fair shot. All things considered, it was amazing we ever had a Front Page at all.

Thanks for reading, friend! Some of my favorite graphic design work ever. If there was any chance in Hell of a fair deal for it I bet I could get Worm to come back and write another installment (I still have the templates). It worked for the 2017 revival (which he donated btw) and we kept in touch, I actually have contacts for a number of the old FP writers and I know if things were better they'd consider returning. But as it stands, no, I could not in good faith ask anybody to come back here and get poo poo on again, it's not fair to them.

TL;DR If you're gonna kill the Front Page just kill it already, Jeff, God drat.

Jeffrey of YOSPOS posted:

Dude I get you are upset but let's make things clear.
1. Lowtax owes you money, not me. He hired you and didn't pay you and that blows. I didn't purchase his debts, that would be really fuckin' dumb, and in your situation I would have considered retaining or getting a consult with an attorney. Probably no remedy there.
2. Back in August, months before I took over the site, I offered to make you whole anyway. You said you didn't want that. I didn't and do not owe you anything but, in the interest of what's right I offered to pay you anyway because I wanted to see you paid. I meant that. Why are you coming here saying otherwise? Editing out your real name sorry for the shoddy mspaint. Screenshot comes from the former frontpage slack channel.

I am sorry that I have not had the time or energy to work on the front page on top of the regular site. It is sad that it has been neglected, but it's never been a priority for me. I'm sorry this means your work was interrupted. There will eventually be something more than nothing there.

BoldFrankensteinMir posted:

I guess I remembered that exchange very differently, I apologize. But it was still really annoying how you never followed up on it, or on any other attempts to contact you over the following months. I'm still not trying to recoup anything from you, I stand by that, but did you make this offer to anybody else? There were a lot of people who got screwed out of smaller amounts and it's just hideous how protracted the whole situation has become.

Again, sorry I forgot your offer, at the time I was still trying to actively get Lowtax to pay up so I wouldn't have tried to double dip on the amount anyway. But there's a lot more to this than just me. Everybody on that team deserves to at least have it offered, and if that's already happened then I retract my objection completely.

I never wanted cross words with you Jeffrey, you seemed like a decent guy, but you really did just kinda disappear on me in the middle of stuff. Thanks for the prompt response.
