Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
There's an article in Al Jaz about the Russia / China veto:

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/22/un-security-council-does-not-pass-us-resolution-calling-for-gaza-ceasefire

Haven't read it in full yet but not sure it was a genuine call for a ceasefire. But neither Russia nor China are to be entirely trusted either!

88 pretty sure I don't have to explain what 88 stands for to regular posters / lurkers ITT!

But 88 also = 23 x 11

It's not ok for the current situation to happen and both wars are/have degenerated into unjustified bullshit, but the current situation will continue to happen because one or the other of the major powers has an incentive to keep it happening because it serves their interest and/or annoys the other guys.

I feel that. I think it's more a combination of us being in a thread centred around discussions of this kind of thing, combined with easier access to unfiltered information from outside the liberal consensus. I think most people's parents probably tried to shield them from the worst as kids as well which is why it always seem like things are worse now.

I'm convinced though that trad media is only going so hard on changing the narrative re: Palestine because they still think that's a thing they can do. I don't think media strategies have fundamentally adapted at all to things like social media, liveleak, whatsapp groups and such.

I think it'll be even longer before they start to catch up with stuff like deepfakes and the latest development in the future is terrifying and it is happening now news.

I have really mixed feelings about that link, on one hand it's so Interesting and exciting when used right but on the other hand holy poo poo is that terrifying. That's the first instance of that I've seen and that's really eye opening...

But also, yes, I entirely agree with you about traditional media not being able to keep up and is having far more access to information these days that simply wasn't possible in the past. Some of the things I saw on telegram RE the Ukrainian war was so bad that I had to delete the app and I couldn't bring myself to trying to get that same kind of information again on the Gaza conflict.

I'm sure similar things happened during both Iraq wars and also Afghanistan and maybe it's personal perception and me having blinkers on, but it just feels so much worse now and like a much bigger deal now.

A shorter fuse on a bigger powderkeg if you like.

OwlFancier

Even absenting the horrors of drone warfare, the coalition forces on the ground in Iraq got up to some spectacularly horrific things, multiple instances of them just gunning down civilians in the street.

It's not the sort of thing generally reported on because much like the horseshit over the UK murdering people in NI, the press just doesn't really take the line that Are Brave Boys could possibly do wrong.

That's just war, some people wage war with the explicit intent of wiping out entire populations of people, other people just view that as an acceptable side effect and call it things like "strategic bombing" but nobody wages war without killing a lot more people who didn't volunteer to risk their lives than the press would have you believe.

THUNDERDOME LOSER 2021
Eight billion people around, and hundreds of nations, make a lot of chances to grow some weighty evil. I will not suggest that as the cause of any evil, or say that nothing should be done. I am saying this: Even if there wasn't much chance of evil in any given case, the number of cases will likely keep pace with the chances. The end result is that the media will always have frightening or sickening or angering things to point a camera at, and they will have every reason to show that picture off alongside their own words.

That's just in a hypothetical world where there aren't forces or incentives to goad evil. This world, on the other hand: holy poo poo.

We all know why things which shouldn't happen often happen anyway: the discussions of fabulists, philosophers or even ordinary people do not conjure their ideas in the material world. The closest thing to this kind of magic is not on a large scale, but to take what little control of ourselves we can and manifest that instead. No control is given to me over questions like 'should NATO intervene?' Every control is given to me over questions like 'should I be reading this?'

To that last question, the answer is not what it might look like I've implied. I'm curious about the world and it's rewarding to share my concerns with like minded people. To that end why not learn about what I cannot control. With that said, sometimes I have other things to do, like write a post about how I supposedly have better things to do.

There are solid arguments behind the Russia/China/Algeria veto.

This is buried in the middle of a sidebar comment piece with no explanation that their arguments are for a stronger ceasefire, and is the only recognition anywhere in the piece. And of course the final sentence, long after most people will have stopped reading, grudgingly admits that the US has repeatedly vetoed ceasefire resolutions. No mention that the UK has also vetoed ceasefire resolutions.

Pretty much every time I see a news story of interest my first instinct (like it seems others have) is to go to Al Jazeera and see if they have a relatively objective report.

AJ article above posted:

The proposal backs the “imperative” for “an immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides”, differing from previous draft resolutions vetoed by Washington, which demanded an unconditional ceasefire.

The US draft resolution also ties the ceasefire to the ongoing talks to secure a truce deal that would see the release of Israeli captives in Gaza.

“It says it’s important that there is a ceasefire; it doesn’t seem to be demanding one,” Al Jazeera’s diplomatic correspondent James Bays, who had obtained a copy of the draft resolution, said earlier this week.

“And it’s also linking this ceasefire directly with the release of the remaining captives being held by Hamas and other groups in Gaza.”

Yeah. Unless she got rushed in for something else, conspiracy fans, and the cancer showed up on scans. But bowel cancer, for example, could have caused an intestinal blockage, which would need an ambulance and emergency surgery.
