One time i prank called a bear buildin workshop and said I wanted my mamaws ashes put in a teddy from where she loved them things so well... The woman on the phone did not skip a beat. She just said, "Brang her on down here. We've did it before."

You can break that stuff, or in some cases get them to do it. It's great.

You could have climbed him in other ways, like jumping up or maybe climbing the back side of his legs.

it's less "scam" and more that you're paying a premium for getting an item immediately versus finding it in the wild somewhere. not every item is in a chest, though a lot of them are, but knowing where they are is another matter entirely

to add onto this, you're likely to fall into more money than you can spend in any given area if you're doing a little exploring and questing. that stuff may seem out of reach now but you should be able to afford it and upgrade a bit before you move on

What's the deal with gear? Are vendor prices a scam or the primary way to upgrade?

If you can't afford new gear, check the upgrade possibilities out. Very early gear seems to have extremely low costs there and at level 1 needs no additional items; we're talking like 20 to 40g in a place where the inn costs two grand. The boosts are small with just a single upgrade but even a few points on each piece of gear bridges some of the gap to equipment, and I had random crap lying around that let me get the second rank in some stuff without trouble. The popup box said upgrades have different effects depending on the blacksmith's training and style, so I guess late game we'd want to be more cautious and where we upgrade our poo poo, which is a pretty cool touch tbh

I was just fighting a cyclops and climbed him, stuck a powder bomb in his back, jumped off and detonated it, and then turned around and used Ensnare to grab him while he was off balance. My Arisen gets a hold of his head with the cable and gives it a sharp, sudden yank that just loving slams his face into a nearby rock, it was one of the most brutal moves I've seen in a game in awhile because it just had such a sense of impact to it.

Sleep, rest, do your best.
Ensnare is good to the extent that I think despite the lack of bow, Thief might be superior to assassin. Trivializes harpies and other light enemies, interrupts attacks on normal sized enemies you can’t just knock over immediately, can even throw large enemies off balance if you get the timing right.

If it also let you zip-line to enemies to do a flying kick it would be the perfect skill.

So you can't really climb over the mountains, there's an invisible wall, but you can grab onto ledges using bomb jumps through invisible walls and that sometimes lets you climb higher. I got to some weird spot and it auto saved and I had to run all the way home once I eventually found a semi safe way down bc the reload penalty lol.

Also, gonna toss in re: gear that is another system that rewards changing classes. You'll find weapons of varying quality throughout your journey and being willing to adapt will give you power at a low monetary cost compared to targeting buying the best gear for one class early on - but do as you will, nothing wrong with either approach.

Spoiler for details without giving away the whole bit: there's a side quest later that asks you to return to the spot you picked up your first Seeker's Token & return under a time limit, if you don't you can't progress to part 2 of the quest.

Mine was easy cause it was the one in the little drop down between the border outpost and Melve that you run past in the beginning of the game.

Where can I find advanced vocations beyond the first two? I thought the elf Arborist would lead to Magic Archer but no dice.

Goddamn the exploration in this game is incredible, everywhere looks amazing and I just want to keep going and going until I'm so laden I can barely move.

Random NPC asked me to escort them well outside of known territory, got chased by a loving dragon bellowing challenges at me for half the distance, found a new town, headed north, found ANOTHER dragon fighting a cyclops, escaped into some castle ruins after Experiments With Ballistas Went Awry, and now I'm doing combat riddles for a giant actual goddamn Sphinx.

I have a bunch of vocations at max or near max and I think Thief's Headsplitter/Skullsplitter is the highest raw damage per second attack I've seen. By the time you get Desert-level weapons it vastly outpaces even high-end Sorcerer spells - in fact, it makes every other damage-dealing attack in Thief feel wimpy by comparison. This is probably less true at lower levels since its power comes from hitting a ton of times very quickly, so against enemies with high defense relative to your attack it will be worse and may deal less damage than a single big attack.

Mystic Archer seems like it may be close in raw DPS when I get max rank - especially the Ice attack that shoots homing arrows that repeatedly pirece their targets and just keep hitting for a while, and the stone/physical spell that can hit one target like 12 times. Sorcerer is definitely outclassed by the time you hit the desert, and Mystic Spear doesn't seem very damage-heavy at this point either.

Warrior is very very strong early on but it it has kind of fallen off as my Attack eclipsed enemy Defense because of how slow its hits are - as a thief I can Skullsplitter 50% of one health bar off a minotaur 1-2 entire times in the time it takes to wind up an attack as a Warrior which won't do as much damage as a single Skullsplitter.

For Magic Archer unlock:
(Minor/vague spoiler)
If you find a big cave in the desert where an NPC at the entrance warns you against going inside then you get an achievement when you enter, you're on your way

(More specific, spoiling an area name)
An imposing cave in the south part of the desert brings you to Volcanic Isle where the quest is.

(Spoiling exactly who/where it is)
When you get to the Volcanic Isle (through the imposing cave in the south end of the desert) you'll find a short bald guy complaining about back pain. Give him 3 flowers to cure his pain, then he will lead you to his house. At his house you'll meet his wife, and the husband will throw out his back again. Offer to lead him to the Hot Springs. Once you do, his wife will appear and thank you for helping him, then tell you to visit her home later to learn how to be a Magic Archer. Pro Tip: You can just talk to her again right away to learn, without having to go to her house later.

Man, I got a tutorial popup about dragonblight or whatever the pawn STD is and :staredog: You can only get rid of it by passing it on to someone else. I got rid of that pawn as soon as I could (I found it outdoors or I would've immediately replaced it) but now there's no knowing if I have it instead. :negative:

sorc's broadly powerful in terms of tackling groups and has a handful of spells like high maelstrom that chew through large monsters, although thief's still probably the best player vocation numerically. i don't think anything in the game can outpace the raw DPS of skullsplitter, and you can stagger most large monsters instantly if you hit a vital with carve

i know warrior's whole fantasy is the "slowly charge monstrous attack" thing but i think it's genuinely too slow in DD2, and the risk-reward of standing stock still while you charge a swing just isn't there when thief can outdamage you with a single cartwheel
