UK also has a social safety net (tatters of one anyway) compared to the United States where people are going to ruin themselves chasing that high.

The sudden change is honestly as much of a problem as anything else. Sports betting in the US has always had an extremely bad reputation, even compared to casino gambling. I've been watching this massive advertising push normalize and de-stigmatize it in a pretty insane way among people who should absolutely know better, and that's ridiculously dangerous when you consider that you have access to this poo poo on your phone.

It already feels like sports gambling is approaching a point where it's going to be about as normal as walking into a gas station and buying a lottery ticket.

I never get the last word, and it makes me very sad.
I still remember poker being something old people played until I went to college, when suddenly the World Series of Poker went from some ESPN2 off-broadcast to fill time with to some cultural phenomenon. It felt like overnight every guy my age was buying poker chip sets and doing weekly Texas hold'em games when they barely cared about poker and gambling before that. I wanna say it was that movie Rounders that kicked it off but it may have been cashing in on it afterwards, I dunno. Anyway, all that poo poo was, and still is, dumb as hell.

I am seriously thankful gambling does nothing for me.

The only time I’ve ever done it was back when sketchy websites started popping up. I made like 100 bucks a game betting against the panthers to cover the spread because John Fox felt like a four point lead was insurmountable.

the fact that the guy who came out of nowhere to win that tournment was named "moneymaker" and that the explosion in the popularity of poker from that time is literally called the moneymaker effect is a little too on the nose

Yep. I had a weekly board game night with a pretty large group of friends around this time and two of them suddenly got extremely into poker and started insisting on having a few games whenever we got together. Which was fine up until the point they wanted to play for real money and got immediately told to gently caress off.

Even if you're one of the lucky ones and you make money from it, it still changes your brain and how you associate with sports.

I was a huge sports kid. Playing travel baseball/football/hockey/basketball on 3-4 teams at once. I loved the tactics, the strategy, might of ended up coaching.

Drunk in college I gambled on hockey in the olympics. I'd played some poker and had a site w/ prop bets on it. I bet Sweden to win and all sorts of prop bets on Henrik Lundquist to get shutouts. I think I won 6 grand which at the time felt like what I make in a year. My autism was pretty good at picking stuff I had hyperfixed on for years and I knew Henrik was running hot coming into that format where he's even stronger than NHL.

Started down the fantasy hole. We rebooted a baseball keeper league 2x and I had to leave. It was "not fun" to participate in for anyone else. I pulled a Jordan and did 6 titles in 8 years. There was an entire sub-rulebook discouraging and punishing my daytrading. Abstractions of WAR/OPS and WHIP/ERA+. Environmental Factors, schedules. My brain was warped and ruined beyond repair by a vast arbitrary competitive landscape.

Gambling ruined sports fandom, still fun to play tho.

We already decided that eating at applebees is worth a million dead americans, so why would we bother banning gambling? Freedom of treats is the first priority and everything else follows.

My silly pet theory is that the indoor smoking bans only got through because it made restaurant dining/bars more palatable to people that otherwise wouldn't want to deal the smoke. The idea being that it was ultimately better for business and only incidentally aligned with public health considerations. Very possibly wrong about this.

The USDA points out that US food spending has recently been at an all-time inflation adjusted high, and that non-home spending took the lead over the past two decades:

Not sure it supports this hypothesis but that switch seems significant.

I think it's more that there was a very huge public information push about the dangers of smoking. In the late 90s there was that massive lawsuit where the major tobacco companies had to pay out billions, part of which went to fund the Truth Initiative which started running all those ads about how many people cigarettes kill each day

tbf if you just avoid western AAA and mobile gaming and you just dont deal with that. there's approximately 9999 bazillion great games without any of that. you have to kinda intentionally seek out lootbox garbage

sports you pretty much just have 1-2 channels owned by like comcast or disney or whatever, and like a handful of monopoly national leagues all slinging draftkings around.

i haven't played games in a long time now but i was under the impression the lootbox poo poo had invaded mainstream gaming pretty hard and wasn't just around the mobile poo poo fueled by whales. i'd also heard it's more about aesthetics than pay2win tho with the more mainstream games.

anyhow i guess the sports equivalent would be watching pickup basketball at the rec centre instead of nba stuff :shobon:
