given how terrible people are with their phone charge, this dont bode well for e-cars. like if batteries were hot swappable it might happen, but that were require all the car makers to have a level of uniform standardized consistency when they cant even get turn signal lights , climate controls, radio, etc to be standardized

As the battery gets fuller it slows down. the attached diner is a fine idea (I'm sure the food is being done by someone other than tesla). the drive-in movie is a dumb gimmick but I guess this location is going with a 50s diner / drive-in gimmick. PhazonLink posted:given how terrible people are with their phone charge, this dont bode well for e-cars. uh, it works fine, plenty of people have electric cars now they're much better for people who don't do much long-distance driving of course, but even if you're doing a long drive they're fine. you take a 30 minute break to park and charge instead of a 10 minute break to piss and fill the tank.

30 min break to charge is a deal breaker That is assuming you don’t have to wait for a charger to open up Hot swapping batteries is the only future. It’s apparently what chinas is pursing

euphronius posted:30 min break to charge is a deal breaker That's not gonna work because if the batteries are interoperable across cars, every tenth battery is gonna be a Tesla. It'll be like when SOG booby trapped Vietnamese ammo crates with explosive and the bullets would just randomly explode a month later. The EV currently works perfectly if you have basically a daily, in-city commute. Preferably from a home with a charger, to a workplace with a charger.

euphronius posted:30 min break to charge is a deal breaker man sitting on a horse: "these auto-mobiles are never gonna take off. stopping to fill up with gasoline? why, freckles here fills himself!" do you really not know anyone with an electric car yet? for a normal person who doesn't do 600 mile trips every week this is not a huge inconvenience, you stretch your legs a bit. also if chargers are frequent enough on your route you can charge for less time slightly more frequently. like, 10 minutes to add 150 miles of range instead of 20 minutes to add 200 miles. euphronius posted:Hot swapping batteries is the only future. It’s apparently what chinas is pursing hot swapping batteries has major downsides because the batteries are super-expensive and are the main thing that depreciates in the car apparently the chinese company doing this makes you lease the batteries. leases are lovely deals. (they're a luxury mark so lovely deals are normal)

Anyway real talk if you're not interested in Elon's clones personally serving you at his diner while you charge for 30-60 minutes the future - probably in the 2050s if we stick to our guns on gas phase out considering ICE tech is at a point you can get 20 years 200kmi out of current late models and that is possibly going up - is you're gonna rent a car to go long distances. Either through a 'classic' grandfathered rental service with gas beaters for rent or a premium electric rental service where you need to pony express them every 200 miles.

euphronius posted:30 min break to charge is a deal breaker It really isn't. What road trip have you ever gone on where you haven't taken a thirty minute break. How many road trips do you even go on a year? 99.9% of the time a normal daily use of a car would not even use 20% of the battery and you just plug it in at your own home at the end of the day. I drive an Ioniq, charging stations are just a nice convenience I sometimes top off at when I'm doing something else. Checking to drive around has never been an issue. Driving from Alabama to Illinois I have to make stops and breaks but no more than I would have anyway.

Totally agree the niche case of suburban office worker commuting is good for electric cars It does not take us 30 mins (which will skyrocket if electric cars are broadly adopted ) to go to the bathroom and get gas on road trips, no. More like 5-10 mins
