One of my favorite things about finance social media and news is they all posts graphs and half the time include some blurb how it is the fault of "woke", "china", or "socialism". They have no idea what any of those words mean.

every company has to cut costs in order to increase shareholder value, that's just basic business. WHY they are cutting costs tho, well now, that's all up to their personal politics.

is this like 2009 Detroit where your $1 house comes with $30k of back taxes and is completely uninhabitable requiring even more money to demolish and clean up?

Most of those houses didn't come with 30k in back taxes, it was usually just a couple of thousand dollars

The real issue is that 90% of the houses in Detroit that were vacant had to be torn down and rebuilt and the ones with usable frames still needed to have banks finance the loans to remodel which wasn't ever going to happen in a million years

The projects that got finished were either ones with a commercial purpose in mind or were the result of wealthy failchidren with trust funds trying to recreate alphabet city closer to their plan b university

Cities like Detroit and Baltimore are what it looks like when the housing as an investment model fails. They can't be revitalized because they're never going to be desirable real estate investment markets, if you can't turn a profit on the house nobody is gonna loan you the money to live there anyway

There's no Tarasoff duty in business, your first duty is to the shareholders my dude.

e: actually, Tarasoff wouldn't apply even since the crime has already been committed. I think that as long as you're not aware of it before it happens, you're good not report it to law enforcement (although maybe you need to report it to the shareholders under Sarbanes-Oxley? Corporate governance is not my strong suit.)

As an aside it's be really nice to see corporate personhood pushed in the other direction a little bit wouldn't it?

Like when Boeing kills a whistleblower you obviously can't arrest Boeing the person but maybe Boeings board should have to elect an executive to take the murder charge you know what I mean

what would probably happen is that the boards would create a new fall guy position, where they pick some random shmuck to be compensated as an executive and enjoy all the perks but their job is to be the designated capital punishment victim

... reached a deal with RWE last year allowing it to destroy the village in return for ending coal use by 2030, rather than 2038...

... RWE appealed to activists to peacefully “end the illegal occupation” of the site it legally owns.

Serious lol at that "concession" to end coal mining sooner that will definitely really happen and not be pushed back instead. Great trade, classic liberal nonsense.

it's so hosed up. the US does the same thing to applachia, senator douchebag from w. virginia has presided over an astounding amount of absolute destruction of land. Just completely unusuable for anything after the coal strip mining operation has gone through, leaving unpacked, unstable rubble that can't be built on and watersheds full of nasty toxic chemicals. They blast the hills, dump the rubble in the valleys leaving a desolate wasteland behind.

E: I think the first one is a western coal mine. Just as destructive, but not in applachia or under the loving gaze of senator man chin, (D-Coal)
