I'm fully expecting the final Omnislash confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth will be replaced with Sephiroth receiving a three-way smackdown from Cloud, Zack, and Aerith

After all, Remake recreated that scene with just Cloud, and Rebirth did it again with Cloud and Zack. Naturally, that means we're adding a third in part 3, and c'mon, that's gonna be Aerith, right? Like whether she's alive or a lifestream force ghost or a meta-entity or whatever.

I'm really curious what their design for Ultima Weapon (the sword) will be. Its original design would I think look a bit cartoony in HD, probably. Then again I also think the Umbral Blade in this one looks wildly out of place so maybe they'll just go for it.

Feel like they'll just forget about Cid smoking. It was a Thing but the only things that really hinged on it were one comedic limit break animation which could be replaced with literally anything else and one brief gag during the ending when he gawps so hard at Holy that his cigarette falls out of his mouth. In a fight between that stuff and avoiding a rating change I feel like avoiding the rating change would win. Sadly.

I don't really think Cid has changed that much from the original. Like he's still gruff in Rebirth, he still yells. It's really easy to imagine this Cid yelling at the crew to drink their goddamn tea. It's just that we haven't been to Rocket Town and met Shera yet, so there just hasn't been an opportunity to show Cid's darker elements.

He is extra nice to Aerith but that makes some sense with the added detail that Cid knew Ifalna back during his Shinra pilot days and so wants to do right by her daughter.

Cid feels very warm in Rebirth, which is not vibe I got from the OG. He's gruff but he's written as someone who appears to be a genuinely warm and helpful individual.

I think if he tells anyone to "drink their goddamn tea" it will be written with a certain amount of winking humor rather than making him sound like an angry psycho.

I've said it before but Cid is genuinely warm in the original too. He comes across a lot worse because of the introduction + the fact they translated him as cursing a lot in the original.

Like here's an example of some of his lines from the English script:

"Let ol' Cid show ya how it's done!"

"Yeah! I'm all for it!"

"Yeah. Right. Hang in there, Tifa. Don't worry. I'll stop by again sometime.""

"Hm...... this ship's gonna save the Planet, huh? Ain't that gonna be just a little tough? Oh man, that went straight to my heart. I'm a man, too! Okay, I'll do it! Everyone, follow me!"

Also a fun emphasis, Vincent speaks to Cid: "Cid...... I wish I had your go-get-them attitude."

Dude is absolutely not a sullen jerk outside of his introduction and interactions with Shera. He is literally a 'go get 'em' kind of guy.

Yeah, you're probably right. I played it once at launch back in 97 and didn't vibe with it super hard so I never revisited it the way I have other Final Fantasies. So I trust your interpretation, but in my one playthrough I didn't really catch that. I feel like in Rebirth they wrote Cid that way from the jump and it felt very palpable to me, for lack of a better word.

Oh, no, they absolutely change how he comes across, but a big portion of that is changing his introduction so he isn't yelling at everyone and being abrasive in a way we discover later is not really accurate to who he is.

I don't think there's anything sad about the removal of smoking from mass media in general tbqh. There are other ways to get the same point across without also effectively giving free advertising to cancer sticks.

Yeah, I think a major difference here is that we're (presumably) getting Cid's introduction in reverse. Instead of being introduced as an abrasive, abusive rear end in a top hat in Rocket Town, he's introduced as the nice-but-rough-around-the-edges pilot he is to, well, most people who aren't Shera. So instead of seeing him be an rear end in a top hat first and then seeing his warmer, kinder side, we instead see his kinder side first and (again, just assuming) will see a new side of him when we go to Rocket Town in part 3.

i feel like "smoking is bad" has reached sufficient saturation of the public consciousness that as a character trait it now exists primarily as a way to highlight a character as reckless or inconsiderate which fits with cid's original characterization

That is literally the opposite of Cid's original characterization where he actively destroyed his own dream to save someone who was telling him to let them die.

that's a very odd read on someone who was just barely considerate enough to not kill someone for performing too many safety inspections and was then extremely bitter towards them for many years until it was revealed that the specific part they were inspecting was about 5 seconds away from exploding

In fairness, if you're still performing safety checks while the launch is counting down, someone has done something wrong, although I forget whether Shera was particularly responsible for that or not (and we do know that she was right to be concerned).

I'm saying that if Cid was uncaring and reckless he would have launched the drat ship. Also every character around him seems to treat him with a ton of respect, the Highwind crew basically is like "Cid is awesome, we're all defecting just for him, specifically, because Cid is great." If he was uncaring and reckless he wouldn't be the guy everyone, including the rest of the team, points to and goes "he should lead us."

killing shera in this scenario is not "uncaring" except in the most absolute sense of the word. if you are driving and see someone lying down in the middle of the street, and when you ask them to move they say "no dude, it's fine, just run me over", running them over is an insane thing to do. like, genuinely psychopathic behaviour. the considerate thing to do is to try and help them. the inconsiderate thing to do is to yell at them for making you late, and that is the choice that cid picks and sticks to for like 5 solid years.

cid is established to be a legendary pilot and also, unlike heidegger(who those guys were working for), not psychotically evil. that doesn't make him a nice guy, it makes him a guy with leadership experience, a high level of competence in a necessary skill set, and the basic level of human decency that even assholes are expected to have.

Cid had two choices, stop the launch or not stop the launch. He couldn't delay the launch, it had already started. He couldn't go down and help her because, again, the rocket ship was already taking off. He made the choice specifically to rescue her at the cost of his dream, which is what he should do but it is still the active choice he made in that moment.

And again, Cid is explicitly a nice guy. Everyone likes Cid. He is not treated as a horrible grump who is just so talented they have to put up with him. They genuinely want to help him because he encourages them. The Pilot on the highwind who levels up over time is being trained by Cid (he mentions it) and thinks Cid is the bees knees. The way he treats Shera is exception, not rule.

Eh, he's pretty gruff in general. He's like a drill sergeant to that guy. And again, the choice in the moment of whether to kill shera or not is not a nice vs. mean choice. Literally anyone with even a shred of humanity in them would make the same choice. It is not a high bar to clear, morally speaking. I'm pretty sure in an even halfway sane world killing her in that scenario would be straight up illegal. This is shinra we're talking about and they're fully run by psychos so no doubt Cid would have been fine but, again, anybody who wasn't totally insane and evil would have done exactly the same thing. This is an "abjectly evil vs. everyone else" choice. The "inconsiderate vs. considerate" angle kicks in once you've cleared the low, low bar of not killing them for being in your way and is determined by how you treat them afterwards, and boy does Cid not do a great job there.

He's not though. Like, again, that's largely the product of the translation.

Cid in the Japanese version is brash. He's flippant and casual and hot-blooded. He speaks loudly and arrogantly in a way that is genuinely charming and fun. He's gruff to Shera but to everyone else he's like a hotshot pilot type. That's his entire archetype, he's literally a fighter pilot cliche. Half his lines are stuff like "Who do you think I am? I'm the great CID drat it" or "Heh, so you've got the guts to approach me? I'll never forget you" or poo poo like that.

Can I timidly say that it just seems like Cid has a professional existence and a personal one and the fact that he inhabits both of these worlds in contradictory ways is the reason anyone remembers anything about him as a character at all.

Like. We're fairly convinced at this point, I think, that maybe some of how we remember Cid's character in general is the product of either mistranslation or misrecollection. Is the same true of Cid's treatment of Shera? Is his resentment of her a translation error? Maybe he doesn't literally shout and swear at her but did they at least not invent the sentiment?

I just think these two things are different dimensions of a character.

No, his treatment of Shera is absolutely in the Japanese version too. Like directly after the party meets him, Tifa (IIRC) is basically like "So, uh, you let everyone talk to you that way?" and then she explains her history with Cid. Like to be clear, "Cid acts one way with Shera and a different way with everyone else" is 100% accurate to the character and is supposed to look bad, to the point the cast comments on it.
