They got plenty of iron ore and coal, and they do still have a steel industry even through it has suffered under sanctions. Otherwise, plentiful oil could also flow into their agriculture as well.

So, when the USSR collapsed, yeah it turns out that SSRs were not designed to be self contained nations. While I do get where you are coming from with this comparison, it's rather different in terms because of the fundamentally different economic policies. The collapse could have been much worse technically, but given the fact that the USSR didn't consider redundancy a problem made places like Almaty, Samarkand, Baku, Yerevan and Tashkent (and elsewhere) to have significant productive capabilities by themselves - not to mention agriculture outside those hubs. Of course, that capacity of resilience didn't mean much with shock doctrine affecting in accord to how much each place went along with it - Lukashenko in Belarus opposed liberalization with success, the country maintained its full suite of metallurgy/mechanical industries, petrochem and it has one of the largest fertilizer concerns of the world. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan went full market reforms under Nazarbayev and became a primary resource exporter, losing much of its own self-reliant capacities - much to the benefit of Chinese industry (and Russian, later on). It had tremendous GDP growth, but a crash of individual welfare throughout the 90s and only started to recover in the 2010s (thanks to not only to Chinese trade but also direct investment)

dead gay comedy forums posted:the mob and neoliberal banditry are pretty similar things in the end of it lol Capitalism is ultimately gangsterism, a predatory few get to have all the nice things at the expense of everyone else. That's why the empire gets along so well with organized crime, they share the same ideological hostility towards socialism and have a common value system in how wealth should be distributed. They successfully weaponized organized crime against the commies, from japan to italy/france to south america.
