American military adventurer and pro-slavery radical William Walker, who briefly ruled Nicaragua as its dictator in the 1850s as part of an effort to annex the country to the US as a slave state before the locals booted him out, escaped alive and spent the rest of his life attempting to build a slave empire in Central America in 1860 he was arrested by the British while attempting to raise volunteers for yet another invasion, and rather than repatriate him to the US, the local British commander decided he was more trouble than he was worth and handed him over to the Nicaraguans, who were very eager to get their hands on him, and promptly put him on trial his entire legal defense hinged on his argument that 'filibusterism' isn't a word, which, while technically true, was also missing the point the court was unconvinced and he was executed by firing squad

Carter initiated America's neoliberal reforms plus began funding terrorism in Afghanistan to get the Soviets to invade. I'm not as clear on this last point but I think he was also the beginning of America getting bogged down in the middle east in the way it currently is. Basically started half the bad stuff ongoing today. That's funny, to me, because he really sped up the destruction of America.

He also backed a bunch of fascists in Latin America- eg helping cover ip the assassination of Oscar Romero- but again Reagan did it worse and more openly so everyone forgot

Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan because local communist party was in deep trouble and Iran revolution had made islamism compelling alternative for muslim population. Carter started support after invasion.

A funny politics thing I remember is that as early as May 1979 the CIA was meeting and planning with the forces of reaction in Afghanistan and in July Carter authorized directly funding them. The Soviet invasion happened on Dec 24, 1979. To this day no one can recall which event happened first, a classic historical mystery. God bless our first neoliberal, evangelical president Jimmy Carter. le epic peanut génocidaire

Wikipedia posted:In May 1979, U.S. officials secretly began meeting with rebel leaders through Pakistani government contacts. After additional meetings Carter signed two presidential findings in July 1979 permitting the CIA to spend $695,000 on non-military assistance (e.g., "cash, medical equipment, and radio transmitters") and on a propaganda campaign targeting the Soviet-backed leadership of the DRA, which (in the words of Steve Coll) "seemed at the time a small beginning." If soviets invaded because of radios, then doesn't this mean that the soviets were loving stupid? Morons, even?

It cannot be understated both how much the Soviets didn't want to invade Afghanistan and how much of a total gently caress up the PDPA were in forcing their hand (aided by the US stirring the pot ofc) Also the general secretary got smothered to death with a pillow which might be the most ignominious way for a world leader to go

But wikipedia posted:The first CIA-supplied weapons were antique British Lee–Enfield rifles shipped out in December 1979 However, radios were probably more important than guns. I understand Afghanistan was relatively heavily armed at the time and radios are very important for modern military operations. Don't take it from me though, here's the people making these decisions quote:https://history.state.gov/historica...e%20insurgency. Also, I would like to apologize, I misspoke in the throes of delirium from my painkillers, the Soviets didn't invade but were asked to assist with quelling this foreign sponsored insurrection.

In the course of the discussion one female MP spoke out alleging that an unnamed male colleague had been watching pornography next to her in the House of Commons. Initial media reporting likewise did not name the MP.[28] Before he had been publicly identified as the accused MP, Parish was interviewed on GB News and said that the MP should be "dealt with and dealt with seriously".[29][30] quote:Asked if he had been "done in" by some of his colleagues, he replied: "I think probably I was."
