yes China is going to lose this war on its doorstep. They're just going to give up. It's not impossible that China fucks up and loses a shitload of men and ships, but the more pressing issue is because of how dangerous that would be to them being as this is happening right there next to China, if they gently caress up then we go straight into ww 3. This doesn't end with a defanged China that see's the light and becomes a neoliberal democracy because they lost a few landing ships.

Lol at this entirely predictable series of events in Australia.

The sarcastic phrase of this novel once again rings true

quote:

Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people’s ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.”

For non-Australians, the Port of Darwin was leased to a Chinese company for 99 years in 2015. The Northern Territory government (where Darwin is), and the Federal Government all belonged to the same right wing political party at the time: the Coalition was in federal power from 1996 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2022. The then federal treasurer Scott Morrison, who later became Prime Minister in 2019, approved this lease to a Chinese Company. Coincidently, the Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Robb, resigned shortly after the lease was made, then immediately got a job working for the same company it was leased to. I'll just quote parts of the article as it's quite long, but corruption/incompetence seems to be the usual suspects.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-03-08/fact-check-scott-morrison-port-of-darwin-china-landbridge/100888740

quote:

In October 2015, the Northern Territory government, led by the Country Liberal Party, sold a 99-year lease over land and operations of the Port of Darwin for $506 million to Landbridge Group, the Australian subsidiary of a Shandong-based energy and infrastructure group owned by Chinese billionaire Ye Cheng.

The deal immediately attracted controversy, given concerns about Darwin's geographically strategic position close to Asia, and the proximity of the port environs to defence activities by Australia's Navy and its US allies.

Then president Barack Obama raised his concerns directly with then prime minister Malcolm Turnbull during an APEC meeting in November 2015, and asked for the US to be given a "heads-up" in future...Mr Morrison also said the absence of an authority to approve or reject the deal was "the problem that I had to fix, and I fixed it, and we put legislation in place to make sure that we kept a hawk eye on what was going on in that… port". That raises questions about whether the federal government, knowing the deal was being negotiated, could have fixed the problem before it was finalised in October 2015.

As well, Mr Morrison's comment about lacking the "power to approve" the deal steps around the question of whether the government had the power to reject...Most acquisitions or investments in Australia by foreign individuals or entities must be vetted by the Foreign Investment Review Board, which advises the Treasurer if the deal may be ‘contrary to the national interest'.

Reviews are done on a case-by-case basis, and the process is not transparent. The final decision is up to the Treasurer. The treasurer at the time of the Port of Darwin lease was Mr Morrison, who assumed the portfolio in September 2015...On October 13, 2015, the minister for trade and investment, Andrew Robb, said it was "a powerful sign of the enhanced commercial relationship between Australia and China flowing from the China-Australia free trade agreement."...Four months after the Landbridge deal, Mr Robb resigned as minister. He quit parliament at the July 2016 election, and almost immediately accepted a job as an adviser to Langbridge....Mr Jennings suggested no one in government seemed to have properly focused on, or fully grasped, the implications of handing the port to a Chinese entity.

Well, the Coalition is currently in Opposition. They're currently berating the government for not being tough enough on China, demanding more military buildup, whilst constantly praising AUKUS for how much it won't benefit Australian jobs & industry and how we need the nuclear subs ASAP...which won't arrive for decades if we're lucky. Curiously, they're very dismissive and quiet on why they leased the Port of Darwin to a Chinese company, as it's in close proximity to US/Australian military bases. The colour of money to their pockets & donors is the real colour that matters! :smuggo:

I got probed for pointing this out, but research suggests this, and the furry thing, is the result of autistic children hitting puberty and not being able to differentiate sexual ideation, the source of their sexual urges, from media they enjoy. If they hit puberty and start experiencing hormonal arousal, attraction, while watching anthropomorphized children’s cartoons, they direct the feelings towards the source of their other “good feelings”, because they can’t figure it out. Thus, furries, a fetishistic practice that is nigh universally composed of ASD people. Similarly, if they consume Japanese animation, they similarly confuse their bodies’ arousal caused by puberty, a “good feeling”, with the source of their other “good feelings”, Japanese cartoons, and direct their urges there.

e: The reason these communities are not “just sexual”, as people are quick to jump all over in defence is the same as the cause, ASD. There’s a high prevalence of “asexuals” and so on. Essentially because they weren’t able to interpret sexual urges during puberty, many still can’t now, and their excitement and attraction, while rooted in sexual pathology, is not necessarily erotic. They don’t experience or understand their intense attachment to anthropomorphized animals or Japanese animation as rooted in sexuality, some don’t understand sexuality at all, so they aren’t lying, there are many people intensely involved in these fandoms for whom their participation is not sexual - per se.

There’s been some work done on this since the 70’s at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and UofT.

For example Sexual Behavior and Autism Spectrum Disorders: an Update and Discussion by Kellaher,

Having highly restricted interests and having sensory peculiarities in ASD may possibly set the stage for developing fetishism and other paraphilias in individuals with certain sensory profiles among other factors. Non- sexual restricted, repetitive interests and behaviors in childhood may morph into sexualized, if not frank sexual, restricted, repetitive interests in adolescence. The same tactile or olfactory peculiarities manifested by various stereotypic behaviors seen in childhood may similarly influence the development of sexual behaviors later on. That is, early, inadvertent conditioning to sensory stimuli that is appealing during pre-puberty may lead to a powerful union between specific ASD sensory-seeking and sexual arousal through masturbation. This notion of early conditioning to deviant stimuli is not a new concept [51]; it just has not been isolated as a factor and empirically studied.

For example, I evaluated a young man with ASD whose interest in wolves as a child transformed into a preferential canine zoophilia as an adolescent. During puberty, he began masturbating to depictions of females dressed up like wolves, known as “furries”, and shortly thereafter he switched to viewing online hardcore bestiality videos featuring dogs. One day he was arrested for climbing into a stranger’s yard and masturbating while touching a dog. This young man revealed his insatiable interest in wolves as a child and how he was drawn to the appearance of their soft fur. In adolescence, he began noticing the scrotums of large dogs and felt urges to touch them. He admitted that seeing and touching the fur and scrotum of a large wolf-like dog sexually excited him. As commonly observed among ASD individuals, he was particularly interested in sensory parts of ‘the whole’ for his sexual arousal. Eventually, this led to his offending behavior.

Which makes sense, because the love between therápontes is higher than base erotic attraction towards women. While the latter is hormonal and determined at birth, the former is cultivated through shared experience and is, in Lewis’ typology, agape, a higher expression of love than eros. You might marry a woman, but you’re not expected to regularly kill or die for them. It’s your therápontes with whom you have a real connection.

This is pulling a quote the sub-section labeled "deviant sexual behavior" describing one person among pulled from a table of "deviants," most of whom in the chart faced criminal charges. That's a hell of a sub-category. But the section leads off with this:

quote:

Several cases of deviant sexual behavior by ASD individuals have been published over the years, yet formal study of deviant sexual behavior in this group is lacking. One might say we are not there yet because we are still in an enlightenment era of collecting normative sexual data on ASD individuals. In due time, specific studies of deviant sexual behavior in ASD may yield information on the prevalence/epidemiology.

I wouldn't select one sample of one person under such a heading and disclaimer to suggest a broad trend this way. Especially when the author is using a lot of "may/might" type words rather than stating levels of correlation more clearly.

quote:

Sexual Interest and Experience
Recent research confirms that high-functioning ASD adolescents and adults have as much capacity for sexual behavior as
so-called neurotypical, or non-ASD, persons [21••, 22•, 23•,
24, 25, 26•]. It was formerly believed that individuals with
ASD had very little sociosexual experiences due to core social
deficits and asexuality or inappropriate sexual behaviors [4,
13–15, 33–35]. In a recent study, high-functioning ASD adolescent were not significantly different in their self-reported
level of sexual interest and sexual behaviors from agematched Caucasian neurotypical adolescents [21••]. Similar
percentages of adolescents in both groups viewed explicit
sexual media including internet pornography and both groups
started masturbating at around age 13. There was no significant difference in partnered sexual experiences between the
groups. Unlike past studies, this study used direct reports from
a homogenous group of high-functioning ASD adolescents to
obtain the data. This in and of itself was groundbreaking.

Similar to the self-reports by ASD adolescents, highfunctioning ASD adults living in the community exhibited
levels of sexual interest and sexual experience similar to
non-ASD adults [26•]. High-functioning ASD adults did not
significantly differ from non-ASD counterparts in their
knowledge of sexual language, interest in sex, or depth of
sexual experience. The authors identified self-selection as a
main limitation because only those ASD participants willing
to reveal their sexual interests and behaviors would be
representing the group.

In contrast, a 2011 study of surveyed high-functioning
ASD adults yielded findings supporting differences between
non-ASD and ASD in their sexual experiences [24]. However,
the authors determined that there was poor reliability of the
sexual education and sexual experiences subscales in their
modified version of the Sexual Behaviour Scale (SBS) [36].

The original SBS did not include questions of normative developmental sexual experiences in childhood such as kissing
and petting. On the modified SBS, 21 high-functioning ASD
adults self-reported significantly less sex education, fewer
sexual experiences, and greater concern about future sexual
intimacy compared to 39 age-matched neurotypical adults.
Poor reliability in the subscales, however, cast doubt upon
the findings of actual differences between the ASD and control groups.
Both of the above studies dispel the notion that asexuality
predominates, at least in high-functioning ASD individuals.
The high-functioning ASD individuals were as interested in
sex as their neurotypical counterparts. Indeed, asexuality did
occur at a higher rate in the ASD group compared to the rate
among the neurotypicals [26•]. A 2009 study similarly found a
greater presence of asexuality in the ASD group though it
must be noted that Basexuality^ included any failed attempts
at social relationships.

Also from the source you cited in your post:

quote:

The data is dispelling antiquated notions that ASD individuals are asexual, sexually unknowledgeable and inexperienced, and/or disinterested in relationships. We still have a ways to go in examining paraphilic or deviant arousal sexual behaviors among ASD individuals. This manuscript provides an update on sexuality research in
ASD in the last few years.

FF posted:

The source you listed also calls some of your claims up thread as “antiquated” and “dispelled” reference your views on asexuality and ASD.

Either you are hastily reading/skimming or just selectively quoting to support your broad argument.

The Elegiac Poems of Theognis give this a better treatment, but clearly gentlemen prefer bonds.

Please tell me you tell your wife this.

Tappan zee is the same tech, longer distance, 5 Billion is a good ballpark guess. It could be 10 or 4 but probably somewhere in there.

It was also in the mid-2010s when costs were already significantly different. I would say probably 6-7 billion at this point and that still took 5 years.
