at least they found an actual black guy to voice Jeff-erfly, unlike Mikiko's VO which is absolutely a white lady in a walmart geisha outfit holding her eyes back with her fingers while she reads her lines at least it's not quite as offensive the Shofixti from Star Control 2 https://youtu.be/m_e-U6kH1ks?si=V_JMDyY4he2bznO3 game developers in the 90s really got away with a lot

Psycho Circus is competently made but the whole Todd McFarlane aesthetic plus how dreadfully seriously it takes the lame story does no favors to the already bland gameplay.

The Kins posted:The funny part is that IIRC Kaiser actually likes Lithtech. He worked on one of the FEAR expansions as a level designer at the start of his career! I wonder why there was a very limited custom level & mod scene for later Lithtech games. I know there wasn't an example level included in the FEAR SDK, which made things much harder to work out, but the modding scene wasn't really that great for NOLF2 either. Was it mostly a "Very poor documentation" issue for NOLF2/FEAR, or were the tools/map editors Monolith included just really naff?

Embracer has sold Gearbox off to Take-Two. Of relevance to this thread is that the Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem franchises are included in the sale. Which realistically means absolutely nothing for their ongoing continuation or availability, but look, it's a slow news day.

Also Half-Life 3, but I'm just gonna keep waiting. It is a fascinating set of circumstances.

Marathon 1 has some fun levels. G4 Sunbathing is no-notes good, it’s probably the oldest FPS level that still feels right to me. I also like how aggro the late game is with crowds, the Pfhor ship levels and in particular the last level of the game throw massive enemy counts at you, very cool stuff. But there is a definite sag in the middle where you’re just going through mazes full of hounds, wasps, and if you’re lucky, lava too. Biggest problems are 1) elevator stair puzzle in Colony Ship For Sale. What a disaster lol. 2) too many mazes that don’t really feel like a spaceship. Whimsical layouts are fine with me but some of this is just wolfenstein tier 90 degree everything. 3) wasps, absolutely repulsive and contemptible enemy, M2 deserves big credit for replacing these with the drones which fill the same mechanical role in a far less annoying way I also miss the dual shotguns. However I will die on the hill that the enforcer weapon in M1 is vastly preferable to the M2/Infinity version.

It's a shame that M1's low points are so low because the terminal texts are my favorite of the series by far, the music is great and sound design is fun, and I have so much love for the soft shaded "90s Mac enterprise software" aesthetic everything has. I even like a few entire levels! There's just a lot of aimless bumbling around with limited direction, a couple claustrophobic corridor mazes too many, and Colony Ship is a total show-stopper even for a series vet. M2 and Infinity have aged like wine, though. Modern controls and niceties really let the level and encounter designs shine, or at least they don't explicitly hold them back like my old 68k did
