It was genuinely kind of hosed up and upsetting having Nana see her adult son physically abusing her grandson. That's some really heavy stuff, and I'm not sure if the text even accurately acknowledges how upsetting that would be for someone in Nana's position.

Edit: and to have it happen because of her own actions/choices, and with a son that (IIRC) she last knew as a young child before she died

it seems extremely extremely obvious we should've cut 10-20% of the lead up for more time with this alone. It's one of the most potentially actually interesting character beats in the entire series and because horikoshi won't engage with the world or characters he made and has no interest in the interior lives of women it just lands with a thud.

e: like the actual text will never explore the idea that nana pretty obviously simultaneously succeeded and failed re: her son, on her own terms, by both saving his life and materially contributing to the defeat of the baddest guy but also failing to build a world where her son would be cared for, let alone any observations that go beyond that surface level, and the few panels we get can't carry that.

So, Shigaraki? :haw:

They actually have a character in this arc who actively didn't want to be redeemed and continually lashed out at the people trying to help him to the point of blowing himself up into a flaming skeleton in the process of trying to kill those people in Dabi, and the manga still came down on the "we still want to save him" side of things.

I'm still not sure we can consider Dabi "saved" considering he's a blind torso at this point.

I mean, I don't think it's terribly likely, given how most other characters Deku has reached out to have survived through pretty clear death flags.

Shiggy successfully blows up Japan, leaving himself and Deku as the only survivors of the named cast. Shiggy flies off to do the same thing for the Yellowstone supercaldera. Deku knows he is so close to breaking through to him!

Fans broadly agree it's fine since 99.9% of victims were background characters, tragic backstories means no agency, and shiggy was not an evil baby.

Hmmm.

Liked this chapter, though it was very very short.

I do think it’s given itself a hard job because “A true hero saves everyone, except that one guy but he was an evil baby so he doesn’t really count” is a difficult moral to pull off*... but I think his chapter did a good job positioning shiggy as a self-loathing edgelord lying to himself and laying the groundwork for how much AFO has been manipulating him.

But I really don’t give a poo poo about AFO as a character anymore. Not for a long time. Vanquished villain raising a successor just to spite his heroic nemesis was an interesting plot beat, evil villain trying to bodyjack his protege and become the ultimate lifeform just feels cartoonish and pointless. I suppose it was kind of unavoidable that AFO would show up in this mind realm because AFO is such a big part of shiggy’s backstory but last page makes it looks like we’re going to get a bunch of AFO quirk ghost bullshit which is most unwelcome. AFO said that All Might should’ve died to spur his disciple onwards - if only he took his own advice to heart like 50 chapters ago.

*especially when the guy you’re tying to save:
A) Has killed like a thousand people and is currently trying to blow up a country
B) Is basically invincible, so trying to redeem him is the only chance of winning rather than being a moral choice

I think it would work to some extent from a "no child is born evil" angle (as long as you please ignore the toga in the corner) but I think for me it would be as much of a copout as literally reverting shigaraki to childhood in many respects

Given the panel where Tenko says "Who would explain why I was born this way?" has the AFO tech-tendril effect on it, I don't think there's any other route here tbh.

Maybe AFO stole his original quirk and gave him Decay instead of just giving Decay to a quirkless kid?

The AFO quirk ghost basically feels like the culmination of what AFO was trying to accomplish in the first place. He wasn't just rampaging to be a nuisance; he was actively trying to get to shigaraki to give him the remaining portion of all for one, which AFO (the character) hoped would essentially let him bodyjack shigaraki iirc. I assume we'll get an actual explanation, but best I can figure is that Deku breaking shigaraki's deeply held notion that he's a vile person who can only destroy and no one cares about him left him in a weakened state and it was enough to let all for one get a proper foothold.

Valentin posted:

It makes sense though since it parallels deku being quirkless and getting one for all from all might. It also is like, the most stereotypical marvel movie thing ever that at the end of a hero's introductory solo movie, they fight a dark mirror version of themselves (iron man vs the iron monger, captain america vs red skull, and black panther vs killmonger are the first ones to come to my mind).

I'm not gonna claim they're good developments necessarily, but they at least make sense in my mind.

right, but her desire for blood parallels shigaraki's ostensible desire to destroy. if that's all just AFO brainwashing, she becomes basically our only example left of "my quirk made me kinda crazy in a socially inappropriate way," which imo fails to pay off a lot of what was interesting thematically about the league of villains and the "individuality" idea of quirks. "it is our social duty to rescue and reintegrate even people with violently antisocial tendencies, and to recognize how our society exacerbated their obvious issues" is much more interesting a note to end on than "don't, uh, don't let an evil dictator engineer generations of familial trauma as part of his long-term plan to rule japan and personally ruin the life of every AFO holder"

I'm assuming AFO has just been monitoring Shigs and waiting to adopt a successor rather than him straight up being the guy who gave him decay.

I dunno, this whole flashback thing is going pretty well. Its the sort of thing i'd expect it to take several chapters because we're in the final arc of a modern shonen battle manga and this is like the core of this confrontation.

I guess I mean I was predicting a version of this where its 1 chapter each for Shigs trying to justify to himself that he wanted to murder his family, him talking about how needs to be the villain because of all his villain besties he's fighting for, and then AFO showing up to reveal he's been behind this the whole time. So genuinely a lot briefer than I expected that this all came out in one chapter.

It was Plundersaurus Rex's dream to be the greatest pirate dragon ever.

I thought it was clear that AFO gave Shiggy Decay because he was the stranger with his face hidden at the very, very start of his origin flashback.

yup it was pretty well established that there is some part of AFO's psyche within shigaraki at this point, he was just angry/whatever enough to overpower it and now deku is loving with all that

It's pretty unsatisfying to have Deku finally get through to Shiggy only for him to ultimately reject being saved("I have to keep being a hero to the villains of the world") just so we can have All For One come back with the "It was me all along!" villain speech to be the actual thing that gets Shigaraki to stop trying to destroy the world. What, are we going to find out All For One made Shiggy's dad beat him, too?
