The Perfect Element posted:Finally playing through ff7 remake cos of all the rebirth hype. Honestly my first playthrough of Remake I thought it's a solid 8/10, if you have nostalgia + like the story maybe higher. But my 2nd playthrough on hard turned it into one of my favorite games of all time. Honestly the ability to use items to heal makes the game way way too easy since you can heal with Aerith + have materias that heal on dmg + benches + items. When I played it on hard , I realized I basically didn't know poo poo about the combat system, you can't use items, you can't waste mp on healing only and benches feel like a Dark souls bonfire. Like optimizing the materia links is not needed at all in normal, aggro juggling by switching character is useful in perhaps a few times. The only good thing normal teaches you, is asses enemy weakness and focus that. Like on normal I never used Cloud's punisher parry but on hard it's broken especially some of the VR battles like the secret battle + Gackt fight because you can have full atb bars the whole fight. This is not a "it gets good after 40 hours jrpg post" but more of a it gets amazing great at 70+ hours. If it's not good for you in the first few hours you probably won't make it there. But ya FF7R is a game I always recommend to replay on hard and since your progression carries over you can try out some of the later skills/weapons more. It should be named NG+ since its more that than a different difficulty level. Also I usually don't care about trophies or platinum but this was one of the best platinums because it's a good mix of side stuff, high difficulty and getting you to try everything in the game.

Ulio posted:Honestly my first playthrough of Remake I thought it's a solid 8/10, if you have nostalgia + like the story maybe higher. I'm really surprised more people didn't realize punisher is a drat auto parry. That alone made some of the one on one fights a cake walk. I started it on normal back in 20 and think I got as far as the first duel and it crushed that fight for the most part. I do think for both Remake and Rebirth they did a poo poo job teaching people how the system actually works. It's kind of important that it is explained well because of how it looks. About complaining about games, I personally think most big releases have at least some aspects that make them interesting. But I tend to mostly reserve my complaints for accessibility stuff, as it is incredibly important to me personally and it is a new field without set standards for implementation. Plus I just appreciate it in terms of its innovation potential. I just wish people didn't rally around pet releases as points of defense or ridicule. Very few games are beyond saving and no games are above criticism. And the hype cycle, boosted by say nothing content creators and overworked impressions driven journalists creates so much downstream stupidity for talk around any given release. People take it personally if you criticize a pet favorite of the moment and collectively poo poo on chosen releases. It's just a mindset that Twitter created and even with its slide into irrelevance people can’t seem to shake the mindset.

Towers can be metaphorical, they're any activity you do where the reward is more activities on the map I don't remember if FFXV had that or if you just had to spot stuff and stop to look at it

Hard mode is a ng+ thing since ur character stats/ materia have to carry over. You need this stuff. Its just chapter selects though, you can revisit anything in the game on normal difficulty or hard mode after you beat the game initially. I think its a good idea for ng+ing games

Maybe I'm a weirdo but "open world bullshit" never really bothers me if the core game itself is fun. Sure, it's a tired design trope, but so are things like skill trees, y'know? If it works in a given game then I don't really mind it being there. For me, Rebirth was fun enough that its open world stuff was mostly a good time for me, because it just gave me more reasons to hang out with my FF7 buds and play the fun combat. Are there potentially better structures? Yeah. I actually wonder what it would've been like leaning more into the Ghost of Tsushima style of relying mostly on diegetic indicators of where to go, without the map icons. Or it would've been cool to have more party banter in place of some of the Chadley dialogue. But "it could be better" is always gonna be true, and having ample room to improve doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, at least for me. Then again I'm also the weirdo who never cared about "anime grunts" (despite not really watching anime) so it could be I'm just easily pleased. My hypothesis is the problem with Ubisoft open worlds is less the structure (icons, towers, etc.) and more that there's just an unavoidable blandness somewhere at the core of many (not all) of those games. You can just kind of feel it as you play--even if you're having fun, there's a hollowness to the games, or at least that's how it feels to me. I think that blandness gets attributed to the entire suite of design tropes on an aesthetic level but IMO it might actually be deeper than that and not necessarily inherent to open world tropes. "Ubisoft towers" have become a sort of shorthand for that kind of bland open world, to the point that when a not bland open world has them, it's assumed to also be bland. The platonic ideal of Ubisoft Towers is The Crew where you reveal the map by driving up to satellite stations.

In Rise of Ronin you reveal the map by simply doing open world activities and sidequests in any order you choose and it's great.

It was very weird that they decided to write a direct sequel to Doom 64 like 25 years after the fact and barely following up on anything from 2016 at all.

To my understanding Rage 1 is pretty forgettable, except for that scene in Breaking Bad where Jesse Pinkman plays it with a light gun. Rage 2 is supposed to be somewhat better, I think?

From everything I’ve heard about it, Rage 2’s quality can be best described as “yep, that’s a video game”.

Rage 2's shooting is tremendous and it could've been an incredible linear shooter. Alas, it's open world and suffers as a result. I'd say it's worth playing if you like FPS's and don't have a backlog, but it's probably best to just mainline the story missions rather than driving around to every little location on the map
