I've mentioned before, we cannot entice the company that potentially makes shells to do so, because their orders from the automotive industry are more profitable.

gradenko_2000 posted:Also the USSR had plenty of consumer goods. It was Gorbachev's reforms that caused the availability of goods to go down, because without GOSPLAN to mandate that a factory manager had to produce baby socks and wooden toy cars, factory managers would instead chase after the highest-margin products. No more baby socks and toys, because of capitalism. This was always a thing though, and it was part of Gosplan's job to crackdown on anyone doing something like that.

Lostconfused posted:This was always a thing though, and it was part of Gosplan's job to crackdown on anyone doing something like that. By 1987, companies had to fulfill state contracts but otherwise could do what they willed on the consumer side and so shortages started as companies tried to game the system as much as possible. Also, enterprises could go bankrupt if they couldn't support themselves otherwise. It was basically internal wrecking. The key to it wasn't really Gorbachev himself really, but Andropov who had promoted him and was willing to let Yakovlev back in who was clear was anti-regime. Chernenko tried to throw water on the issue by demoting Gorbachev but he died and there wasn't enough resistance left in the politburo to stop him. Basically, the Soviet Union didn't die in 1991 but in March 1985. Btw, Chernenko was ethnically Ukrainian ironically enough.

Look at the US as well from the 1980s to now. A country isn't killed on the streets, it is killed in the backrooms. ---- Andropov is an interesting question mark because for most of his career until 1980-81 he was doctrinaire and generally a hardliner but beginning with the Polish crisis he made a right-turn, including appointing Gorbachev and other liberals to the politburo and experiencing some light economic liberalization. A lot of things had let slip under Brezhnev but it seemed Andropov led a more sudden acceleration. ---- hmhb fan posted:lmao and Ireland know what it's like to live next to an expansionist Britain (and are still occupied in then north by them). I think in the case of Brezhnev and Andropov you had old men who had been comfortable for quite a long time, and at a certain point they "tuned out" so to speak, and became more and more influenced by younger party members who had their own ideas. Granted, in the case of the Soviet Union, you had people in government who were not just not interested in the socialist project but honestly could barely contain their open hatred of the country, which is why it is so bizarre.

if you put too many nitrates on plants they get burnt up sorta like the osmotic pressures from other salt ions. don't think you can cram so many nitrates into a plant that it can do much of anything to a human body before killing the plant...

There are some studies that show there can be issues with nitrates in very high concentrations, like in production facilities, but it isn't really a reason to use them in everyday agriculture. I assume by "black market" they mean their father would buy roadside vegetables people were growing from their own plots rather than state or collective farms.

ammonium nitrate fertilizer costs money. why would they waste it if times were lean? applied directly to the dirt it can get into water supplies, though, and it is carcinogenic. that's one reason it's frequently injected as an aqueous solution a few feet underground
