Not looking particularly likely for SBF getting any sort of lighter sentence when the judge just out and out told him he committed perjury during the sentencing hearing 10 minutes ago or so. Witness tampering too. I hear courts hate it.

Maybe it's my general opinion of the crypto world but 25 years federal time seems.... fine? Like I don't think that we should sentencing people to 100+ years unless it's necessary to keep society safe...

Yeah, I don't like that the rich, white business crime fraud manchild got a lighter sentence, but his lighter sentence is in line with my tummyfeels on what a max incarceration should ever really be. It's a very complex reaction.

There's no way the sentencing guidelines actually recommend 110 years, because the federal sentencing guidelines only go up to like 30 years and then life. (And as far as I know, the only federal crime you get life for is murder.) There were several counts of fraud and whatnot, but federal sentencing guidelines also say that you basically just take the greatest sentence of all the counts and that's the sentence. (You essentially serve your time concurrently.) On the plus(?) side, federal time doesn't have parole, so 25 years means 25 years.

My cynicism almost goes the other way, it feels like they're nailing him for loving with rich people's money when there's countless other corps getting away with all sorts of financial fuckery. or the fact we're still waiting for Trump to see an ounce of consequence for his countless crimes and legal fuckery.

It's a very complex reaction. I think I understand where you're coming from. It's a reasonable sentence for the crime that was committed, but it sucks that only rich white people get reasonable sentences while poor people of color can go to jail forever for doing things that aren't nearly as bad (or for things that are entirely harmless). Basically, this is a time where a rich white person got treated in a way that should be standard for everyone.

Staluigi posted:how many years would they have to run those tug escorts to equal the cost of the bridge collapse event. like a hundred, two hundred Quick lunchtime math from numbers I could find: seems like the tugs cost maybe $5000 average and there are around 300-600 big cargo ship movements in that port in a year (hard to exactly tell what numbers are for what vessel types). The cost estimate for replacement is like $400M so it'd take like 100,000 of those tug fees to reach that cost. So yeah it seems like somewhere on the order of 300 years to reach the same cost. Bar Ran Dun might have a better idea than my quick look though.
