just so you know the game takes away most of your valuable plot items in NG+ except empowered godsbane, for some reason but it lets you keep the platinum card to wilhelmena's place (don't judge, the guy at the entrance sounded like he would sell useful things, he does not. curse you itsuno for making it seem like there may be something useful there)

There's actually two legit copies of Death Knell of Nations that I've found. Another is in the Waterfall Cave near the start of the game, guarded by a wight.

Apparently there's also a second copy of Howling Blizzard too, since I have one but never had to trade for it. No idea where I picked that one up though.

There's a good side quest for this where the game practically screams at you "make a forgery of this grimoire" and even so when I was done a hired pawn said this outcome never occurred to their Arisen

Framerate around the capital is more stable now. I still get spikes when going into other sections but Im guessing thats it loading assets and other NPCs. What I'm guessing is that there wasn't any occlusion going on before? At least like some AI occlusion or something like that, I see NPCs pop up more frequently now and when they do there is a spike in cpu usage, but before it was like the entire thing was capped because the CPU couldng chug fast enough even when entering the cities outskirts.

It's the same place, the cave near the start of the game has a chest with Nation's Death Knell and Howling Blizzard, and opening the chest triggers a fight with a wight. I believe it's also the same place where you can encounter a chimera very early on, if you miss the cave you might not see one for a long time.

It's a pretty cool cave to have so close to the beginning, and would be a rude awakening if you decide to ignore the "travel to the capital" quest and go exploring at like level 3. Chimeras in DD2 seem tankier than they were in DD1.

I had to jump ahead to the present in this fast moving thread because I've accumulated some questions/problems I could really use some help with.

  • How to deal with stun lock as a fighter?

I'm about level 8 in both Fighter and Warrior and I'm having a hard, hard time getting Fighter to feel good, it's only such high level because I want to like it. I've recently reached Battahl and the "knacker" goblins can knock my rear end up and down a hillside, never giving me a chance to get back up. Even if I perfect parry the first one, I can be hit out of my follow up "execution" animation after pressing Y. This just isn't a problem with Warrior, who seems gets hyper armor and hyper poise.

  • Do I need to save any "valuables", like Jasper?

I did hold on to them for a long, long time, worrying they might come in handy, but when I reached BakBattahl and had sticker shock with the prices I finally let them go.

  • Tips on Mystic Spear Hand?
I only dipped my toe into it and it was a bit like Fighter where I felt to vulnerable for a melee character (I find the two toughest characters are warrior and, ironically, Thief once you get the dodge toggle skill.)

  • Have I "missed" Magic Archer somewhere?
I don't need to hear anything narratively specific, but I've reached BakBattahl and if someone could tell me whether I should just remain patient or whether there's somewhere I should back track to, I'd appreciate it.

Mystic Spearhand gets a literal invincibility shield that allows you to just ignore attacks.

Magic Archer and Warfarer are unlocked right before the end of the game. Magic Archer is difficult to miss.

the story is really amusing but it's honestly garbage. i haven't played the first one in a very long time but i remember it being much better. that might be because the recycled ideas felt a lot fresher when seeing them for the first time, idk if it was actually better.

For me personally, the answer is no. They are apparently used as upgrade materials occasionally, but I have never had to use them in that way (having upgraded various pieces of Warrior, Archer and Thief gear). If you do need them for that purpose, they won't be hard to find, and worst case scenario you can just put up a pawn quest and ask goons to complete it. My advice, just keep one or two of each in storage, and sell the rest.

I would keep at least one of each main valuable (jasper, onyx, and tiger eye) in storage just in case because I can confirm I needed to use a tiger eye to enhance some Magick Archer gear with Elven smithing. My guess is that since the item descriptions for these valuables tell you where they're rare it means that 1) you get more gold if you sell jasper in Battahl or tiger eyes in the Elven territory than you would elsewhere and 2) some upgrades to gear and/or weapons might need those valuables depending on the smithing type. Since I needed a tiger eye for Elven smithing I'd bet certain Battahli smithing upgrades need jasper and certain Vermundian smithing upgrades need onyx.

dd1's story is just kind of there too, i felt like the dragon had more to do and say though for sure than in 2. i also felt like some storylines had unsatisfactory involvement in the main story, like the godsway and the fake sovran. there just wasn't much to those. the dragon being so weirdly silent was a bummer and the fight with the dragon was also kinda boring unlike the gauntlet stuff leading to the dragon in 1. i appreciated talos as a setpiece fight but there wasnt much to it

Confirmed, this is how it works. This also applies to certain types of food, such as quinces which go for a lot in Vermond.

Money is not enough of an issue that the average player would ever need to take that into account, but it is a nice touch.

Best I've got is try not to get hit. I'm still on fighter for 200 more dkp and I absolutely kick poo poo in until a single goblin throws a rock at me, then I get my poo poo stomped for like a quarter of my health.

Most of the Steam reviews are due to performance issues and microtransactions. If your rig can run the game well enough and you ignore the MTX (it's very ignorable but there's a lot of it when you look at a list) there's a good game in there.

this game is very good but it's also janky as gently caress and probably overpriced. it's hard to say how many of the negative reviews on steam are actually based on reality or the result of mass Gamer hysterics over someone's imaginary DLC implementation

Zedsdeadbaby
Jun 14, 2008

You have been called out, in the ways of old.
The bad reviews are mostly down to poor PC performance and microtransactions. The PC performance concerns are very valid, the MTX concerns much less so (they are no different to the typical minor examples you find in most modern PC games)
If you have ever played any of the Monster Hunter games, that's kind of the same the same gameplay feel.

the truth of the mtx is you literally do not need a single thing they're selling, it's all available in normal play. the performance issues are real if your CPU is underpowered. the game rips though

I dunno about this, I felt quite the opposite, the game just seems incredibly dull and basic those first few hours. To be fair like 25+ hours in a lot of it still feels pretty dull and basic but there's enough oddball stuff to keep me going, plus I like the vibe of setting out on a long journey, being on the road, having to camp, exploring nooks and crannies. Which I'm about to do, finally finished those lame "sneak into castle/jail" questlines and got permission to trek to the next zone.
