turns out, canadian tax laws categorize tips as controlled (taxable) vs direct (not taxable). Controlled tips is stuff like tip pooling where the owner pools together all the tips and splits it among the staff. This counts as business income so it�s taxable. Essentially, if the owner is involved in *any* process of the tip collection/distribution, including deciding on which distribution system to use itself, they owe taxes. Automatic service charges count too.

Direct tips are anything where the money goes from the customer directly to the employee and are not taxed.

the government is telling businesses to make their employees form a own tax council and have the employees manage anything related to tips. this includes storage, how tips are distributed, and handling the distribution. they also need to provide a separate safe for storing tips that�s accessible only to employees. im sure this will cause all sorts of problem especially since so many tips are cashless, some are making their employees use this third party software to access their tips but it costs employees a fee to get their money lol just a poo poo show all around
