yeah there's a bunch of blogs that also talk about it, e.g. https://www.savespendsplurge.com/the-ultimate-actual-homemade-oat-milk-oatly-like-not-slimy-creamy-not-watery-that-works/ has some good steps and pitfalls. i mean ultimately it's very easy to do, basically just oats+water+enzyme. but there's slightly different ways you can do it but the amylase is the only non-skippable step imo. ive tried it without and it was loving horrible. I did it with it a few years ago and it was vastly better, although if you aren't adding oil and some stuff it will taste a bit different than store but close enough.

I still usually buy Oatly just because I'm lazy and I honestly don't drink that much much 'milk' or make that much lattes at home so a carton lasts me like a month.

Yeah, part of the reason why it speaks to me to be honest is, I tend to buy quarts of oat milk, use a little bit of it, and then forget it until it gets funky. I hate wasting food, so my hope is, if I can make at least an acceptable version of it myself, I'll be more likely to use it all, and hey, maybe it will even save me a little money over time. Thanks again!

speaking of which, this was just in the new yorker today: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/persons-of-interest/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-trad-wife

you could say it starts as sort of a the right-ish reaction/reinvention to the stereotype of sexually-free-spirited dyed septum aloof NYC heiress. but it's more just an example of the social media influencer industry algorithm being a self-replicating beast adopting the aesthetic of 'cottagecore escaping the milieu of urbanity for 'picturesque rural cottage free from modernity stressors'. much like how all the tech companies like to ape brick walls and steel gantries and rustic doodads in turn-of-the-century factory-settings, it's an algorithmic influencer version for the vouyeur-as-consumer base of consuming the 'cottagecore' with the immaculate home

it only exists because social media exists. simultaneously it doesn't really exist: it's simulacra, a facade. it's not a real 'movement' or 'thing', it's a fictitious aesthetic that social media algorithm has ranked higher for profitability.

e: lol found this, this thecut (very lib-brained) article is brutal https://www.thecut.com/2023/09/tradwife-content-influencers-conservative-ideology.html

quote:

Unlike other creators in this genre, she used to be a popular bisexual vegan ASMRtist and OnlyFans creator, posting under the name GwenGwiz. It would appear that once she started making serious money on OF, she moved to the suburbs (or exurbs — opinions vary) and, as she frequently professes, got interested in submitting to the will of a man.
...
These young ladies are warning us about the toxins in vaccines and plastics from rooms made with building materials whose off-gasses I can smell through my phone screen. I was young once too, and playing pretend like you’re in Little House on the Prairie can be fun. But ultimately, you put on your puffer coat and head out to Target for your tampons and Nespresso pods like everyone else. This is just a hunch, but I suspect many of the tradwives of TikTok are going through a phase, and if we look in on them in five years, they will have moved on.

TikTok tradwives go much harder on the ideology and on the smutty side — the overwrought Christian hashtags, the fetish dresses and cinched aprons, the milky-white cleavage — while actually showing us much less of the life itself. The showing happens on Instagram, where ideology is concealed behind lush gardens, cherubic baby-fat rolls, and actual homestead kitchens. What Instagram lacks in buxom bosoms and hashtags it more than makes up for with perfect evening light and natural blonde hair

Hannah is an icon for aspiring tradwives, but, like Gwyneth in the wellness space, she occupies a logistically and energetically unattainable tier. Both women have some kind of spiritual Red Bull coursing through their veins, matched with unlimited funds. She is married to the son of the founder of JetBlue, which explains the bottomless farm budget. She is Mormon, which explains the number of children (seven). She went to Juilliard, which explains the dancing. There isn’t really much mystery here. I’m sure she has a small army of young Mormon babysitters who help with the kids. There is abundant child care in Mormon Utah; it’s part of the culture.

What is irksome about Instagram tradlife isn’t the question of “How does she do it all?” It’s that the visual appeal overrides whatever ideology lives in the background — and that’s the point. When Hannah Neeleman engages with chic rich-hippie brands like Rudy Jude and DÔEN on Instagram, she’s deliberately blurring the line between aesthetics and ideology. It’s in her best interest as a creator to cast a net wide enough to contain progressive homesteaders as well as the Quiverfull set, and she’s very good at this.

I think it's as real as every other conservative influencer grift - they identify an asthetic to sell to their audience, do it for six months or a year, and then rebrand when the idiots have moved onto their new fixation.

HELL SERPENT
Lipstick Apathy
r/Minneapolis - AMA 4 year Uber driver

quote:

I see a lot of misinformation happening in this sub about the ins and outs of this industry. Ask me anything.

I don't know where a lot of that studys info came from but it does not represent my experience. I pride myself on the analytical way I approach this gig and my ability to make a living from it.

First things first. In order to make money doing this you HAVE to reject 80-90% of the rides that are sent to you. They just aren't worth it. I have a lot of experience seeing how Uber uses drivers anxiety and fear of not making enough to push them to take non profitable rides.

Quick few points. Uber generally takes more than half of the money you pay as a rider. Uber uses threatening language to scare drivers who don't know their rights as independent contractors into taking more bad paying rides. There is no rate card currently. No time and mileage guidelines for pay, the prices are simply made up. Any longer rides are generally paying slightly over 67 cents a mile. Nothing factored in for your time whatsoever. I think that's because they can't pay less than the Fed tax write-off for some reason.

Ok I'm here if you have questions. Please use me as a resource instead of using assumptions to make points about this issue.

Edit: well I wasn't sure if this would get any attention but if anyone sees this that has anything to do with making these decisions wants to contact me for perspective, I'd love to talk. I'm not associated with any groups that have been pushing any of this and I do see flaws in the way both the mayor and the city council have approached this issue. The things I can agree with is the pay certainly needs a significant increase and Uber must be transparent about pay, safety and changes to their system.

quote:

Pay mostly. Most rides either are too far away to pickup to make it worth my time or don't pay enough to make it worth my time. We get nothing for the time and mileage it takes to get to a rider. Most rides that exceed the min payment of $5 are barely paying over 67 cents per mile.

If someone is close to me and going a very short distance the $5 min makes it worth my time. If they are going from downtown to 35th and Hiawatha for that same amount, I reject.

Edit: Im adding this here to get seen.

If you as a rider have noticed pickup times being way off, rides being cancelled often or just not getting your ride accepted. The reason is because Uber does not pay consistently or fairly. There could be 5 drivers a block from you but Uber will low-ball the pay and they will all reject. Now it's pinging around many drivers around the city that may or may not be close to you. Uber just wants anyone to take it. It doesn't matter where they are. The number of rides if seen that are 15-20 mins away from me paying $5-6 for a quick ride are insane. I bet at times there are 50 drivers between me and you but I'm being offered it because Uber is desperate to get anyone to take the bad fare. Some drivers think they will get punished for rejecting rides and take it because of the semi threatening messages they get from Uber when they reject too many rides. Now you have a 15 min wait for a driver so you can get a ride to the corner store. All so Uber can keep more of the money you paid.

quote:

If you throw every other thing away and only look at this one point, it's really all you need. Uber cannot risk real competition. Lyft and Uber absolutely collude on pricing and how their apps work. If Lyft lowers rates, Uber lowers them too. Each company only has to do slightly better than the other to get an edge when they are both using the exact same business model. They are both comfortable with this arrangement because in the end it mostly gets pushed into the drivers.

What they cannot handle is a completely different business model coming in and gain market share using a better model. Most people check both Uber and Lyft when they order a ride and decide which one to use. They are so similar that they have to check them both because at any given moment it could be a different choice. If you bring in a competitor that is making money off drivers subscriptions as opposed to riders payments, you now get lower fares, better pay and everyone is happy. People will stop checking Uber/Lyft if there is a big enough supply of drivers for the demand of rides.

I'd go as far as to say Uber would be willing to lose money in this market simply to keep that risk at bay. If that idea caught traction in other cities it could very quickly hurt their bottom line.

When I was a little kid, my father begged, borrowed and saved to buy a small factory that made taffy apples. Cost more than $1,500,000. The first year he only made $100,000 in revenue. By the time we were done with high school he had paid off the factory and he was making a nice living every year.

The money that it takes to buy the factory (nvidia chips) is the investment that must be made to make the taffy apples. (Though ironically I believe inference must and will be done on CPU)

We are in minute one of the AI business and the rate of growth of revenue is massive. This article does illustrate who is selling the shovels and making good money at the moment.

Nobody (American) wants to work as a postdoc anymore

quote:

According to the latest data release, 62,750 postdocs were employed at U.S. institutions in the fall of 2022, a 1% drop compared with the year before. But the trend diverges sharply by citizenship. From 2021 to 2022, the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents working as postdocs dropped from 29,755 to 27,289. The 8% change is the largest year-to-year percentage-wise drop in the history of the survey, which has collected data since 1980. Meanwhile, the number of postdocs with temporary visas increased by 6%, from 33,573 to 35,461, about the same number as in 2020

Much of the shift can be attributed to employment numbers in the biological and biomedical sciences, which saw a 3% drop in the total number of postdocs from 2021 to 2022 and a 10% drop in the number who were U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It’s not clear from the recent data release what’s driving the trends. But the declines coincide with a boom in hiring at biotech companies. And data from a separate survey released by NSF last year indicated fewer U.S. Ph.D. graduates in the life sciences are pursuing postdocs than ever before, with an increasing number heading to industry.
.

The survey data is incomplete but anyway the NIH minimum postdoc salary is $54k so shock and surprise that graduates are looking elsewhere.
