The big guys are nothing, and I have a feeling what I meet in the desert will be the same. I don't really have a problem with the difficulty, but I outlevel everything so quickly just checking every nook and cranny.

Yeah you know what, I think I might get a mod like this too, on top of the difficulty tweaks and class/augment rebalances. You do level up very quickly if you're doing full clears and fighting to kill everything you encounter instead of just running.

Level 30? 35? I honestly can't remember when I did it.

Basically as soon as you get to Bakbattahl. But it really depends on how much you struggle to kill stuff as the quest involves escorting a NCP through some high level monsters. You can run past monsters to get there, but you can't really avoid them while escorting him.

I mean I guess you could run to where the quest ends, drop a port crystal, go back to where he is, pick him up and use a ferrystone.

The tavern has a beer symbol. The bed symbol is a different building where you can actually sleep. I don't know what buying a round actually does, maybe raises some affinity from the patrons?

That sucks, but yeah taverns have a frothy beer mug icon, inns have a bed icon, I think there's one place where an inn is situated on the second floor of a tavern so that might have been your confusion.

Improve Vocation has no immediate effect, but is supposed to give you higher stat increases upon leveling up while a specific Vocation. Not too useful for me since I probably won't be leveling much in the near future. Improve Skill halves the stamina cost of a specific skill you can select. And with that I think she's about as good as I can make her for her level:

Feel free to take her out for a spin if you're on my friends list, I'm curious to see if it leads to her using Erupting Shot more often.

I took her with me today on my low-level journey to unlock Magick Archer early. She jumped into the brine almost immediately.

Tambaloneus posted:

Getting to the quest? You could do that immediately. Running away from enemies is pretty easy and you can take the ravine under Checkpoint Rest Town to get to Battahl. Just be aware that when you go through the goblin/saurian cave to get to the volcano island, you should REALLY bust up the rocks holding back water before jumping in the horrible saurian pit since it will clear a way through the rubble.

Now, completing the quest to escort slow back pain man without him dying? That's tougher. Could rely on high level friend pawns, but if you lose the escort guy I think you're just screwed and can't be MA on that playthrough. Bring a bunch of wakestones for both him and yourself. You can clear most of the mobs before you start the escort, but some saurians will spawn when you accept it. Probably best to just carry him and run past the golem.

the launch skill seems like a trap on warrior pawns. This much higher level hired pawn with that skill is doing less damage than my vocation 1 personal warrior pawn because he basically doesn't attack. he tries to do it in any situation whatsoever and canceling it with "wait"->"go" will just make him do it again a second later.

The real meat of the game is in the side content, but huge swathes of the side content are easy to overlook and miss. Exciting locations and quests that you only find if you go out of your way to explore in the wilderness with no direction, but insanely high enemy density with very repetitive fights against the same poo poo that discourage you from spending time discovering what's out there.

I love this dumb game a lot but quest discovery is definitely the biggest pain point to me. I really wish that anyone with a quest would pop up on the minimap in the same way the escort quests do once you get close enough.

Endgame thief drip is sick. (Not pictured are the daggers I gave her once I fully upgraded them. Also, what kind of photo mode doesn't let you freely rotate the camera? Urgh.) Her Highness is ready to adventure and loot stuff in your world!

Postgame was a lot of fun, I liked fighting the bonus bosses and the whole change in environment, although I didn't really stick around as much as I could have. I did my best for most side quests but I failed a couple and didn't do a few more (never found the grimoire girl everyone mentions, never did the beggar quest or the guy following the arisen, never followed up on the bandit hideout guy who got jailed or whatever, never did anything with wilhemina or whatever that some people mentioned was a thing). I already posted my biggest complaints (difficulty, density, the way the story is structured, lack of layered equipment & skill slots). I'll play a bit of NG+ to see what's going on there but I think once they release a DA/BBI style DLC it will be hella awesome.

it's good for you
Finished the game, and stopped for now at the true ending. Some thoughts:

(big spoilers obviously)

The lack of several really good things from DD1 is really strange.
  • Feste, Edmun Dragonsbane, Elysion
There's barely any antagonistic people in the game and once you get to Battahl the Vernworth people (other than the Sovran pretender for a few seconds) don't show up again. Elysion was an actual villain, Phaesus is just...there?

  • Bluemoon Tower
You visit this place at least twice in DD1 and it takes the place of a lengthy set piece dungeon. It's incredibly memorable. DD2 only has Dragonsbreath tower which pales in comparison and the endgame tower which also pales in comparison other than looking really imposing for the latter half of the game. What else is there? The Mountain Shrine?

  • Watergod's Altar
This was an awesome introduction to DD1's dungeons and felt like a D&D set of encounters. DD2 mostly just has caves and a few short dungeons that don't feel anything like the Watergod's Altar.

  • Witchwood
I'm not saying the Elven forest or the magician kid's hut miss the mark here, they're pretty good, but the Witchwood was a more thematic location for getting lost in an area than the Misty Marshes in DD2. I dunno. Maybe I just want some quest NPCs sitting in the Misty Marshes.

The structure of DD2 feels so anemic. I don't understand how people can say DD1 felt unfinished moreso than DD2. The progression from Wyrmhunt -> Investigate the Cult -> Kill Grigori -> Deal with the Everfall -> Confront the Seneschal was fine to me, and throughout all of that you kept up with characters like the King and got to see his downfall. The writing and delivery of the cult leader and Grigori himself far surpasses anything in DD2, despite having similar subjects. Characters like Phaesus in DD2 feel flimsy in comparison. The cutscene with your beloved under attack in DD1 was great (and sometimes hilarious) to watch while Grigori talked on, and in DD2 he just holds your beloved in his hand and says a few lines? Come on.

I love the larger new world and enjoyed playing the game as much as I did, and a lot of the changes to vocations are good. The game also LOOKS really loving good. But holy cow DD2's narrative doesn't hold a candle to the surprises DD1 kept in its back pocket. I'll see if my opinion changes after working my way through the true ending.

Vookatos

Close to the end, and while I enjoy the second game a lot more, I respect the first game more.
I'm guessing Capcom yet again didn't give the team enough money or time, because it feels like a very safe sequel. The original was an overambitious game but it was also 11 years ago, and the sequel barely has any new interactions with the world. The enemy roster being almost the same in particular hurts it a lot.

What's also really surprising is a lack of proper dungeons. DD1 had a watery ruin, a castle, crypts, a tower... Sure, there were very few of them, but they were interesting and big, and no matter what my Steam achievements tell me, no caves are not "dungeons". There's not a single place that felt similar to the cool gauntlets of DD1 aside from one optional cave I've found, and even then it looked like most other caves.

Also, while the appearance of the number II in the title card is a hype moment, it feels like the game is gearing up for a second half, only for it to be like 10% of the game.

I've enjoyed the game a lot, and it's been a while since I was so dead set on just exploring, but I really wish the game was given more time and/or money so it wouldn't just be Dragon's Dogma 1 But World Is Bigger

Morroque
Mar 6, 2013
I wonder if the concept of "dungeons" may be something game designers are moving away from these days. The Legend of Zelda was a series which typified their use, but then they had a game where they decided to make a bunch of little, bite-sized dungeons that could be completed in only a few minutes, instead of the comparatively large ones from before that supposedly took hours. The turnaround on that change was so successful that darn near everyone is doing it now.

... but I also wonder if it isn't really a matter of scale. With seamless open-worlds like these, having no loading zones or other dedicated boundaries, everything loses its sense of proportion after a while. They could drop a DD1 location right into DD2's engine and it would feel smaller because everything else is just that large. Maybe it's possible that a lot of the very large cave systems in the game are actually quite comparable to the "dungeons" of eld, but we're no longer capable of assessing it objectively because everything needs to be that much larger, just to pass.

I did it in the highish 20s with a mostly maxed out first vocation (Archer). You'll want to follow a guide if you're skipping the story quests, and if you have the RC hiring some stronger pawns helps a lot for encounters you don't run from.

And as someone else mentioned, be prepared to grab the final escort and just haul rear end with him if you encounter anything you can't handle.
