I think for my next playthrough when they finally release any big DLC I will get a mod that decreases player XP earned from small mobs (but leaves vocation XP the same). I've just got done exploring everything in Vernworth and about to do the coronation, but I'm already level 40+. The big guys are nothing, and I have a feeling what I meet in the desert will be the same. I don't really have a problem with the difficulty, but I outlevel everything so quickly just checking every nook and cranny.

This could be a big help, in my repeat run I'm like halfway through the initial Brandt quests but I decided to wander off to do the Sphinx riddles, unlock Trickster and Magic Archer, and put portcrystals down in the Volcanic Isles/Bakbattahl and generally fart around. Now I'm over level 30 and everything in Vermund is pretty much irrelevant, and I tried to run from most fights but occasionally had to stop and kill some things (I was surprised that I could, frankly).

You get a boost to dcp (as well as xp) gain for running around with support pawns that are a much lower level than you, or none at all.

I really liked how the ending sequence gives a highlight reel of your most used/longest travelled with pawns as well as showing who your best friends among the NPCs are.

Glyndwyr was my second closest friend despite me fobbing off his requests to do escort quests three times.

Postgame was a bit confusing, I think I was meant to talk to NPCs more before going to the glowing points of interest on the map but I could never find anyone with anything relevant to say on that subject, even if the journal entries suggested some stuff was following their plans.

no, my controller batteries have lasted an unusual amount of time playing this compared to most of the other games I play.

You have been called out, in the ways of old.
I don't think it helps that it's using vibration feedback for a lot of little things. At one point it was just non-stop 'bzzzzzzzzzzzt' vibrations when I was fighting the poison asps alongside a troll and a gryphon.
My controller runs out of charge very quickly anyway, but it's very fast on DD2.
The dualsense battery has always been anaemic, and games like DD2 just highlights it.

My controller has lasted about as long as it usually does. Are you spending lots of time out of breath from sprinting so the controller loudly makes panting noises?

E: you should be able to use Warfarer to replicate DD1 versions of Assassin and Magick Archer easily enough. Mystic Swordsman fans out of luck though.

I went back to DD:DA after about 20 hours in DD2 - not because I disliked my time in DD2, was having a lot of fun, but more because it makes sense to wait on patches and DLC for DD2 while finishing the game I always liked but never got more than 20 hours into.

I somehow seem to appreciate DA all the more now, probably because I've played a *lot* of Monster Hunter in the years since DD1 came out - starting with World and going back to some of the older games. I appreciate DD's combat style a lot more now.

It's been a real blast so far. Just clearing out the quarry, so I'm really very early in the game.

I even chose not to mod the game except for one that tweaks MA/MK to have a slightly rebalanced stat growth where one point each is moved from the phys/magic defenses to the phys/magic attacks. Plan to use any and all classes as I choose and not try to min/max at all.

It's a lot of fun, def go back to DD:DA if you're even remotely interested.

My biggest problem with DD back in the day was trash mobs feeling overwhelming, the trek with the oxcart to the capital killed my interest every time because of the constant harpies and bandits, everything felt like it hit way too hard and had too much sponge health. I'm curious how much of that is me playing dumb or if it was an actual issue.

That was my memory from my first runs too, but I picked better skills this time through. All of that felt pretty straightforward, including the Saurians in the well. I think DD2 has a better intro sequence and I was better at the game this time.

But the 3 Ogres in the Quarry are another matter, though maybe I shouldn't have gone there straight after reaching Gran Soren. I brute forced the first one, but then went back to the city to figure out a better skill load out and also to craft better healing. Fighter feels really good so far, now that I've got some skills.

I feel like I'm engaging more with the game's systems this time. Crafting better healing for myself and pawns for eg., not chewing through Greenwarish that can provide significantly better healing through crafting.

Unlike the original, you get the Eternal Ferrystone right away when you get to Gran Soren - infinite but limited fast travel right out of the gate. There's also a very early Portcrystal at the bottom of the Everfall, make sure you pick it up in that first visit. So it's quite the gentler start than the original game when it comes to getting around.

The combat does feel more consequential so far than DD2. It's easier to die/you have to stay more watchful. I may even put in a slower leveling mod to keep that feeling as I'm enjoying having to engage with the game's crafting and stuff.

Told to go talk to city leaders to evacuate the city

Go to Vernworth - Disa is locked in her room?
talk to Sven, who now has a crown - he says I need to talk to Brant
talk to Brant - he says if the world is ending I need to talk to Sven
talk to Sven - "Brant told me the world is ending and we need to evacuate", but he needs to convince his mom and I need to convince the ox-cart drivers to help
go to Disa's room, pick her up, carry her to Sven. Sven "hey thanks for bringing mom to me"
go to the Ox-cart - Allard is throwing a tantrum because he wants to use the carts for his valuables. I pull out my daggers and he runs away screaming, then the ox-cart driver says thanks, quest complete.

Go to the Elf village. Talk to the leader
Leader - "We elves will stay here"
talk to him again
"we're staying"
again
"no"
again
"ok you convinced me, let's evacuate"

I can see this kinda poo poo being frustrating or whatever but I just laughed.

I may be crazy for this but I can't help but feel as though the ogres, trolls and chimeras have had their difficulties neutered in this game. The hardest time I had with the chimera was during the sidequest where you had to get the poison lover to be doused in chimeric snake venom. They're barely a threat otherwise and can either be chain stunlocked with well-placed shots or slashes, or get too lost in their own attack animations to really hit anyone? Comparing them to DD1 where climbing was far more effective at dealing damage encouraged the player to get real up close to them and it felt like their AI knew how to deal with that. Like I beat the Medusa earlier and it felt like they didn't have any idea where the party was.

I'm looking at merging a couple of DDDA mods and unpacked game_main.arc. The names of the files that control vocation ranks are interesting, they don't match the names we see in the game itself.

- Mage rank growth is in a file named Magic User (LvMagicUser.lvl.xml). Perhaps reflecting Itsuno's interest in early D&D?
- Mystic Knight is Paladin. Another nod to D&D?
- Ranger is Hunter. Well, there goes the D&D theory as Ranger was in og D&D and in AD&D wikipedia says.
- Magick Archer is Trickster. So that vocation name was already in the original game.
- Sorcerer is Wizard.
- Warrior is Battler.
- Fighter, Assassin, Strider all have the same names for their files.
