Colorado was the first place they tried to pass "person hood" via referendum, and the questions and hypotheticals I would get daily were the ones that popped up in Alabama after that recent decision. Abortion politics in Colorado even back in the 80s and 90s were always pretty liberal, and up until now we always played defense rather than offense. The crazies would try to ban something or require something and the sane would always vote it down. Obviously, in 2008 Colorado went for Obama big, but even our internal polls had something like 51% No, 25% yes, and 20+ no opinion/not enough info. The fact that we won 2008 by such a wide margin was a genuine surprise. The next state that tries to pass personhood was Mississippi in 2012 and it was defeated with 58% of the vote. In loving Mississippi! Those campaigns were a loving blast. Our office was in the planned parenthood and we would get harassed every day and even got followed by the big red truck, with huge bible versus and gross fetal parts pictures strapped to it's side, when some of us went to lunch one day. My other anecdote was at a big convention for all ballot issues, candidates, etc in Loveland. Cory Gardner was running for the house and some of his dude bro college staffers and one college aged woman staffer came by and tried to debate us. Our policy was not to engage the crazies and we didn't. We offered condoms instead. About an hour later the woman came back by herself and was shocked it would ban birth control, in vitro, etc. You could see the wheels slowly turn in her mind that, yes, that guy you work for hates you having bodily rights.

The thing that continues to annoy me the most about all the assholes who want a Gilead are so stupid and unable to grasp anything but hammer to the face text-text is that EVERYONE was miserable in Gilead. EVERYONE. They think their lives suck now, so they want to tear it all down and put in a country where women are property and can be treated however they like? Guess what: In a Gilead equivalent or whatever these assholes would poo poo out, there's still going to be a pecking order and you're almost certainly not going to be at the top of it. And if you are, somehow, there's legions of men below you who want your spot. You can never relax, never enjoy yourself, your every minute is looking for the knives. And if you're down among the legions, well...you're right back where you started, except now women are even MORE inaccessible because oops, they belong to the top of the pecking order. Life for misogynist assholes got 10x worse in Gilead: yeah it got 100x worse for women, but these types really don't strike me as people who are willing to suffer THAT much just so the people they don't like suffer more. By that, I mean I do feel there's a degree involved for all the 'I'll let myself get hurt if the people I hate get hurt worse', and a Gilead greatly exceeds that degree for these weak, pathetic shits.

In some ways it is way stupider than how stupid it obviously is, the whole thing is really about having to do the dishes even though women are obviously biologically better at cleaning the house and having to do laundry is a waste of the obviously better pursuits they are entitled to do, like drink a beer and watch TV while their wife mops. I think the purest and most outwardly ridiculous case of authoritarian biotruths I've seen is reading an excerpt from some piece written by some conservative crank (wish I could remember what it was) which had an aside recounting his horror when encountering a nerdy young black guy, like he was witnessing something perverse and unnatural, as though said young black nerdy guy could only have been corrupted by his liberal peer group and he was merely suppressing his natural instincts for being cool, boisterous, and trendy.
