That's VAT not NI though?

A pensioner who actually has a job (I am just realising this is presumably you) will presumably pay NI on it but usual sources of Tory pensioner income (like...pensions, public and private) don't pay it, and I would never peg (err. no pun intended on other conversations itt) you as a Tory voter.

Yeah I realised that after I posted it I was thinking more about the idea that it was only pensioners who vote tory rather than the VAT / NI thing but didn't zap/edit it because I got a phone call in the middle and forgot to.
I'm not a state pensioner yet.
(I get a small previous employment pension about £60pw). Still over 2 years to go.

Once you reach state pension age, even if you're working you don't pay it at the moment though maybe it might change because you may have already paid in well over the number of years. I'm into my 39th year of paying it at the moment.

ed sorry this post is a bit jumbled up & disorganized, I'm multitasking (aka eating my lunch simultaneously).

Regarding that Teledyne factory that was targeted by Palestine Action, a youtube auditor visited the site, and the protesters were successful in closing the factory down. There's been a hell of a lot of rain since the roof was damaged that will have leaked into the building.

The protesters definitely slowed down production of whatever specialist components they were manufacturing there, and even a delay of a few days is a significant victory imo.

She thinks she's a centrist and she thinks she's representative of most of the UK* "everyone just wants to be in the middle" - she thinks private schools are centrist and the other thing she blames Labour for is the thing where if you are a couple & one earns more than £50k - her husband - and the other earns less (she's on about £14k - part time) you don't get child benefit but if they were both on £32k (giving same gross total) they would get child benefit and this is Labour's fault despite the fact that the tories have been in power 14 years - so it obviously suited them to keep the system - and didn't change it until this year which happens to be election year.

*heck - maybe she's right about that and maybe this group of people - mid 40s with a kid at private school - will ignore everything else & vote tory on this, their red line? I know she's pretty clueless about almost anything politics - my other colleague & I both have left wing views & we are sometimes gobsmacked at how ignorant on any number of political issues the centrist one is (she doesn't do politics).

I don't get why folks are saying community fibre will have the best service. It might be the 'best' place for your money to go, but the best service comes from an ISP that has both the technical and organisational infrastructure to provide good service along with knowledgeable staff that aren't just reading from a script.

A lot of new FTTP deployments will be like in the US where you have no choice of provider and therefore no incentive to maintain decent service. This is compounded given that most of them have had massive investment from private equity to get the fibre in the ground and eventually they're going to want a return on that investment - which means increasing margins and enshittification.

I am with Zen and have been for years. I've worked in ISPs more than a decade (not Zen) and any time I've had to call, the person on the phone knows more about that technology than me.

The HICBC came into effect in 2013 and was announced in the 2012 budget by noted Labour Chancellor *checks notes* George Osborne. So sounds like she is just deluded in more than one way.

To be fair HICBC is a really stupid tax - anything that temporarily increases your marginal rate is pretty stupid. There's plenty of dumb things about our tax system that both progressive and conservative governments should be motivated to get rid of if they were interested in being a competent government and not just terrified of bad headlines if they were honest about what our tax system should look like. VAT on private schools however is a good tax; and since only a small percentage of children are actually in private school I can't imagine this middle-class-but-not-rich demographic who piss away their disposable income on a private school is very large at all. Personally I think anyone with a household income <150k are absolute fools to even consider private school. Maybe even more than that. It's so insanely expensive and just putting away that cash to buy your kid a home is going to benefit them much more.

I still think she's just an extreme example of the colossal failure of blairism as a personal outlook.

Her and a bunch of the other 90's celebs are all just massive wankstains who imagine themselves to be cool and trendy and progressive because they thought of themselves like that in the 90's and have never actually engaged with the fundamental failings of that period or how it actually carried on a bunch of older hosed up poo poo. Less a change in substance, but a change in branding.

So it is utterly unsurprising that she would repeat stuff like that. Because in the 90's she would have been saying it about gay men.

You think the person who wrote werewolves as a metaphor for AIDS, and had the major character who was a werewolf contract his wolf-AIDS as a young boy because a pack of elderly werewolves sought out young boys to infect for their entertainment, might have bought into to homophobic tropes about gay men?

it's tempting with hindsight to question why they didn't (it would have torn the party asunder), but they should really have just dished the poo poo on the labour right, properly hosed them up

as it turns out tearing the party apart wouldn't have mattered much because we now know the party will never again serve the interests of the country's shat upon

Thames Water troubles swell as parent firm defaults on debt

Thames Water has seen its troubles deepen after its parent company defaulted on part of its huge debt pile.

Kemble Water has formally told lenders it failed to meet a deadline to pay interest on £400m of debt due on Tuesday.

The water giant has also asked lenders not to take any action as it explores its options.

Thames Water's 16 million customers will not be affected.

This notification confirms an announcement on 28 March that Kemble would be unable to repay its lenders as interest and principal payments - including a loan repayment of £190m due at the end of April - come up.

It has issued a formal notice to its bondholders, but asked them to take "no creditor action" in order to enable a "stable platform" for negotiations. Companies sell bonds to investors to raise the funds they need, paying the money back over time with a premium.

Incoming taxpayer bailout in 3, 2....
