I legitimately don't even understand who Highspeed Etoile is for. We literally just had two car racing anime last year - one street, one circuit - that, whatever you want to say about their overall plots and characters, at least made the racing look good. Here? Enjoy dull as hell races with no sense of speed whatsoever, where half the drivers are AI bots for, uh, reasons.

Like, it kind of feels like an advertisement for a mobile game, but I don't think there is one? Or even an upcoming one?

edit: Given some of the prominent company names they presumably somehow got to support it, maybe it's a tax write-off.

usually the answer is as simple as some producer thought a girls racing franchise would be interesting, got the sponsorships, but didn't land a good anime staff.

High Speed Etoile very much feels like it's trying to sell it's self as Umamusume but for racing and I can see maybe that's why it pulled in all the sponsor logo's from some big companies. Cause Umamusume gets the big money and if this is a hit I can see everyone thinks it's cash and potential mobage money.

Except you know the first race had all the speed of Hard Driving from Atari and we got the great background characters that don't even get the luxury of having faces. And despite some decent 3D models their is no style to the animation and action feels like it'd be rejected for a Simple PS2 game. it feels like a waste of the Nana Mizuki and Fujima designs

This show is awful but it's my kinda of awful so I'm in for the long haul

ahhh okay i have heard of uma musume but i've never watched anything from it. does it get really in the weeds on horse racing the way that etoile does with its weird near future prototype racing?

like i 100% did not expect how etoile just ended up feeling like a racing tv broadcast for 80% of its runtime.

Yeah, the races are in depth in Umamusume and it has a weird setting that the show plays up., It's just Umamusume is horse racing which means the races are short and the show (especially season 2) has actual creative staff so the races have style and drama and feel exciting unlike what ever Etoile's race was

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

The problem with the comparison though is that the Uma Musume mobile game was already known to be coming (for several years no less) before the anime even aired - hell, the game was initially supposed to have launched the same year. They'd already rallied interest in the concept and anime before it even started, even if the real moneymaker ended up with a lengthy delay. The whole thing was part of a big multimedia push from the very start.

Here? Etoile's just been tossed out with very little fanfare, and certainly no announcements of some related property.

it's so loving weird that, if it's a show about setting up this property to be a big gacha thing or multimedia franchise or whatever, their introduction to the world is going this direction and not like, following ballerina girl around and introducing her and the core racer group and then having an actual race be in an episode or two when some stakes are established.

i feel like i got what they were going for - like i said, it's like you're watching an anime try to do a wipeout or extreme g version of the 12 hours of sebring or super gt or some poo poo - but it's edited down to 15 minutes and it's an insanely dry version of that with zero stakes. like, why do i care that third place guy, who doesn't even have a face, is trying to lightcycle boost past max verstappen king guy and second place queen lady? i've watched the real version of this kind of racing and i'm baffled by the approach.

also for the record the deal with the girls band cry subs is that some guy posted mostly done subs, someone else stole them and MTL'd a few random lines and inserted some memes, and then splashed them all over various piracy sites

so the guy who actually did the TL isnt gonna fansub it anymore

I hope that someone scrambles to license Girls Band Cry before next week like what happened with Bravern. The clips I've seen look nice, animation sorta reminds me of DreamWorks TV show spinoffs of their movies, oddly enough. Not a bad thing though, I like the character animation.

I don't say w00t in real life
I've had decent success with MTL for other japanese and korean television shows.. dunno if i'd want to watch an anime that way tho. lovely that someone stole an incomplete fansub and passed it off as their own.

Whisper AI even without MTL would be incredible for speeding up fansubs since it already outputs decent SRT files with almost proper timings.

There’s other ways of watching anime?

cave emperor

Watching anime, three good first episodes in a row.

Wind Breaker: Wasn't planning on checking this out, but I'm glad I did. "Punks with hearts of gold protecting the neighborhood" is a great premise, and based on the OP and ED it looks like it'll have a fun cast of characters. The big fight scene looked really good too, hopefully they can keep up this level of quality.

Girls Band Cry: I thought this looked really good. The 3D animation looks amazingly smooth in motion, and the first episode was peppered with little sakuga moments. Not exactly the most original premise, but it's got a lot of energy, and I'm a sucker for band animes in general. Two middle fingers up.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night: Looks great, very colorful and lively animation. Very similar actually to Girls Band Cry in its narrative setup. Definitely planning on sticking with it.

Having the audio with no subs is better than what they sometimes do, which is have the audio but subs for an entirely different show, which also happened multiple times to multiple shows last season.

They've done both to Villainess Level 99.

the perfectly legal free sites have functional subs for jellyfish. weird!

girls band cry: this was fun. classic rural girl goes to the city plot. the failed songwriter with the jazzmaster is a lot of fun and the cg is pretty stylish. i didn't think it was amazing but i'm in for more.

meanwhile

jellyfish can't swim in the night: there's a lot of directorial flourish here, they do really cool poo poo like using the train as a metaphor for the lead's aimlessness and crazy time jumps/rewinds that are really cool. i wasn't into the rest of it - they're trying to set up this renegade artist collective with the main girl teaming up with the failed idol and also having some kind of commentary on how everyone's trying to be big online or have a social media side hustle now and how that affects the people making art. neat concept, the execution didn't land for me at all. on top of they do some sketch, leering stuff with the main character like undressing scenes, cleavage shots, and bath scenes that were definitely gross.

Toei still continues to be real good at cgi animation. I kinda of want them to do the upcoming Maho girls sequel in 3D
