If I wanted to add $60 to my monthly Mediacom bill to get TV (I only have Internet, and for that I already pay $115), I could watch Cubs games on Marquee ... but I already use an ex-girlfriend's YouTube TV account, so, yeah, I'm not giving Mediacom even more money than I already do.

So the Orioles didn’t end up manipulating Holliday’s service time? Why did they send him to the minors in the first place? Were they planning to manipulate it and then realized it’s a bad look?

I think someone said this was the last possible day they could call him up and be rewarded draft compensation if he wins rookie of the year.

My guess is they were originally planning to hold out for an extra year of control but between not getting off to as hot a start as they wanted, Westburg looking like crap to open the season, and Holiday currently making AAA pitching look like a bunch of little leaguers, they realized the better move was to call him up and you might as well do it within the window that might get them draft pick compensation if he can snag RotY.

He's 20 years old, only made it to AAA last September, and is learning a new position.

NYT posted:

Ippei Mizuhara, the former translator for Shohei Ohtani who was fired late last month amid allegations he stole millions of dollars from the baseball star’s bank account to cover debts that Mizuhara owed to an illegal bookmaker, is in negotiations to plead guilty to federal crimes in connection with the purported theft, according to three people briefed on the matter.

A guilty plea from Mizuhara before a federal judge — likely to include an admission of a range of facts related to any illegal conduct — could confirm the account that Ohtani gave to reporters two weeks ago, in which he said he had no knowledge of what happened to the money.

Those briefed on the matter claim that prosecutors have uncovered evidence that Mizuhara may have stolen more money from Ohtani than the $4.5 million he was initially accused of pilfering, the people said. In particular, the authorities think they have evidence that Mizuhara was able to change the settings on Ohtani’s bank account so Ohtani would not receive alerts and confirmations about transactions, the three people said.

TMZ posted:

Shohei Ohtani had no idea his translator was gambling millions of dollars, and the feds have concluded not only was the Dodger star NOT involved in the scheme, he was a victim of fraud ... law enforcement sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ Sports.

The feds have been investigating Ippei Mizuhara, Ohtani's longtime translator, close friend, and functionally his manager. Mizuhara gambled away millions, reportedly at least $4.5 million, and after the story broke he said Ohtani had covered the debt.

Our sources say the feds, who launched an investigation last month, have concluded Mizuhara was lying -- that Ohtani was completely in the dark over the gambling debt, and Mizuhara embezzled from one of Ohtani's accounts without the pitcher's knowledge.

There’s the answer to everyone who wondered how Ippei could make those kind of transfers without Ohtani knowing.

My initial assumption that Ohtani was trying to help out his friend by repaying his debts was indeed wrong, I will never doubt the innocence of our boy again.

yes, as has been reported by many in the last couple weeks, this is not uncommon for rich athletes to give a trusted friend and assistant access to one of (they often have many) their accounts to handle bills etc for them, particularly for Japanese players for whom English language banking transactions can be confusing. This isn’t even the first time someone with such access took advantage of an athlete.

Yeah but Phoenix likely doesn't have access to the channels the show Mets and Yankees games. MLB blackouts are based on TV, not in-person attendance. Of course that's still total bullshit in a lot of cases (as mentioned before with Iowa and a lot of other areas).

I'm more talking about, "Hmm, here's an Ohtani article on Twitter. I wonder what people think." Then every comment is someone with an AI generated pic of Jeter shaking Pete Rose's hand beneath the twin towers commenting, "OHTANI IS A BET MAN!"
