I'm including "manga about a couple that just hangs around" under this category (this stuff is the bigger offender for me, because I only read manga and rarely watch anime). Actually, I've noticed a trend where "literally any drama beyond really mundane stuff" is weirdly absent from most romance stuff these days. It's just series after series of "look at these adorkable people." I want drama!

If you want good drama, I heavily recommend Ikkoku Nikki. It has some yuri into it too, but it's not the main focus.

My first experience with a boring cute girls doing cute stuff anime was Aria. It's like a vacation brochure to a place that doesn't exist, and Neo Venice is a lame concept.

Speaking of shows / manga where kids just kinda do stuff and nothing else happens, I've been watching 2018's Mitsuboshi Colors with my buddy and it's pretty good! It's about three grade schoolers who claim to be the protectors of their town but all they do is gently caress with each other and harass the local cop who is apparently their archnemesis. The kids are very precocious and insensitive in a way that's both believable and highly entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX4H2GdD20U I tried reading the manga, but something about the scanlation didn't really click. There's still some good bits in there anyway.

The Japanese have basically perfected straight-man humor via manzai. I lol'd at the part where the girl says the teacher will ask "You kept him alive?!", but entirely because of the delivery of the line and its reaction.

Oglethorpe posted:is Majo tu Yajuu good? It's...okay? I dunno, it's got good animation and art and some neat fight scenes but I didn't feel like there was much to the plot. It's a bunch of arcs (with one exception) where the two protagonists go to investigate some weirdness happening somewhere and invariably throw down, often with a witch. I watched it because I was kinda hoping it did something fun with gender (as Guideau is presently trapped in the form of a woman because of a curse but can temporarily break it to assume her true form as a weird monstrous male/genderless? entity) but it really didn't. Guideau just kinda wants to track down the witch responsible to undo the curse and doesn't have much to say about anything unrelated to that one goal It's fine if you just want some light action stuff in a fantasy setting with a bunch of characters that mostly carry themselves in an understated manner, but I feel there's a lot of better alternatives

Pener Kropoopkin posted:So the whole premise was that Japan is a fascist hellhole that cultivates crime for the purpose of repressing it and they could just leave the whole time? Leaving is an option? I'm not even talking about your average assassin, but the average Japanese lives in a carmageddon 24/7 when they could just leave? The implication is that the child soldier death squads and heavily-armed terrorists are relatively ignorable for the majority of the population unless they're directly involved with the small clique of maladjusted oddballs playing cops and robbers with each other. Sure, you might turn on your TV and see the Joker having a shootout with schoolgirls at a major landmark, but you've got your board game group this evening, so really, who cares?
