Actually to be honest I think the island really needs that. Addiction is out of control, but we are still in the phase were no one talks about it. Charlottetown has set up an outreach centre, but as usual the nimbys are out in force against it. I spent enough time on the west coast to know this is going to get way way worse.

People get busted here periodically with 100k+ fentanyl pills, a memorable bust had one pill for every person on the island. People handwave it away saying they are just being trafficked through the province, but that makes no sense. No one drives through PEI to get somewhere else. I used to live in a small farming village, about ~500 at the absolute max. On and just after benefits day we'd have multiple ambulances a day. I'm in Summerside now, the locals are convinced it isn't an issue, except a couple homeless. Again, having spent time on the west coast I can tell who is hooked, and it is a lot more than a couple homeless.

Keep an eye out for postings in the future. The cons are gutting healthcare, but that is going to turn around. People here are about to riot over housing and healthcare. We had a by-election in my old riding, it was a diehard conservative stronghold for decades. At my polling station in 2015 (16? I forget) only like myself and one other (my partner I hope) didn't vote con. The Greens (who are good in PEI) swept it in the by-election. The media made some noise about it, but I bet the cons are making GBS threads their pants. I cannot stress how conservative the riding is, and especially the village i was in. You'd get run out of town if you let people know you didn't vote conservative. The polling station workers harassed me and my partner for not living by conservative values (living in sin!).

Edit: Somone recently got busted with ~1 million doses of Fent. I'm sure that is a bit inflated by police, but it was nearly 2kg of pure fent. Insane.

I don't follow? Conservatives and pills are a thing for sure. Utah was famous years ago for having an absurd opiate consumption combined with very little open discussion of the issue. Is that what you mean? The old-timers in my village would talk about how the local doctor would "prescribe" them all bottles of some opiate for cash back in the day. So people there have been hooked on opiates since the 80s at least.

Bleck are you saying the whole village was in on it?

Virtual Russian
Sep 15, 2008

Nah, it was just that some doctor used to prescribe it for cash. Not really a scheme. I'm sure that happened all over. I'm not suggesting the conservatives are pushing pills as a party, just that highly conservative areas get hit by addiction just as bad, but no one talks about it in those communities so it just burns out of control.

Edit: but also yeah, rural martitimes be bleak as hell even in the near past. Things are a touch better now, but not much. In NB a decade or so back nearly a third of the province had an income under 10k. There are a lot of factors there, but no matter how you slice it that is poverty.

In 2010 when I first went back to visit friends after moving away for university, I wondered why people had taken to calling it "Scummerside." I assumed it was just the usual petty township rivalry, but when I got there, it kinda made sense. As a kid I never noticed the lack of opportunities there. I dunno what people can even do to get above minimum wage if they're not at CRA or working remote in tech. Excluding seasonal jobs, that is.

The story my NB relatives have told me about drugs in the Maritimes is that it comes in through the ports (eg Halifax) and then gets smuggled alongside other goods. For instance, Summerside's 7 car dealerships competing for the custom of retirees and CRA employees get their cars from Halifax, and drugs could get hidden in the bodywork.

On one memorable occasion, there was a big cocaine bust at Dooly's in Summerside. The day before, my uncle had driven in from Halifax on his motorcycle to visit us, but said he had to stop in at Dooly's first, to visit his "motorcycle buddies". Late in the evening, my dad went to check on him at Dooly's, but was stopped at the door by a brick shithouse of a man. Instead my uncle was sent out to mumble a vague excuse and convince my dad to go home.

Uncle motorcycled back to Halifax overnight, drug bust implied to be HA the next day. Quite the coincidence!

Anyway, we haven't been especially close to that uncle ever since.

Anyway, we haven't been especially close to that uncle ever since.

Summerside is honestly a lot more vibrant than even just ten years back, but still looks and feels like a shittier poorer Moncton. I think another car dealership is going in, but don't forget about the like seven competing furniture retailers! That Dooly's still has a bad rep. Summerside area was very cheap, so now it is filled with folks from out west that just work remote. The population nearly doubled since the pandemic. Retailers for stuff that can't really be found on amazon are doing extremely well. The furniture people all drive Audis and BMWs now, but besides that there hasn't really been an increase in opportunity. There aren't better jobs, just more bad ones. The influx of people working remote does nothing to build community wealth, it just increased retail sales, but the cost of housing has gone up about 400% since the pandemic. You used to be able to buy a house here for 70 - 150k, now they all range from 300k - 750k. MY rent is still reasonable by western standards, I pay $1200 a months for ~1100 square feet. Before the pandemic I'd have expected somewhere between $550 and $650 for the same place. I also had a connection there, so I'm paying slightly below market rates. Plus the guy gave me a free month because I'm a maritimer. His Ontario born son-in-law arranged everything and his eyes did a Tex Avery when I gave him the first cheque. He literally came back to me after like 20 minutes and said "the rent is too high" and gave me a free month. He's a solid dude, fixed my car for free too. A dying breed of maritimer.

The locals are beyond furious with westerners that move here. Being poor here used to be ok, bleak for sure, but if you had any full-time job you'd be guaranteed to be able to buy a house. Most people survived on only 6 - 8 months of full-time, the rest of the year on pogey. That way of life disappeared overnight, but if you are an illiterate 55 year old farm hand you are just screwed. I don't know what those people do to survive. I've had customers of mine from Ontario complain about being harassed constantly when people see their plates. Little do they know they've got it easy. Back in the 80s and 90s the locals would burn your summer home down in the winter while you were away if you pissed them off. I know a museum director who locals mailbombed (almost killed his son who got the mail) all because he was from away and got the job over an islander. There has been an uptick in arsons on the north shore where the cost of living climbed the most. So maybe old habits die hard?

Growing up in the maritimes I always understood that our drugs came from Montreal, maybe with Hali on the up things started coming in there. I always heard bikers got stuff in Montreal and then distributed from there. No matter what no one is trafficking through PEI, there are only three ways onto the island, I can't imagine that is good for smuggling. What is found in PEI must be meant for distribution, but I could be wrong. I don't know more than what I observe, I haven't touched anything worse than weed since my early 20s.
