Why are these stupid cunts so obsessed with pubs? The industry is dying and nobody under 30 goes to them any more, but they're all convinced they're cornerstones of the community, when in reality pubs like that are mostly populated by the same four or five bitter old twats taking up a table for the day because they hate their wives.

I remember doing something back in , what , 2009? On some london hack who had started a “save the boozer” campaign. I met her and she took me around some of these threatened “boozers” that , to a man, all reeked of stale lager, fags, piss and regret, had some miserable poo poo of a landlord and 3 sad old bastards nursing a pint of mild. I genuinely left her thinking “let em loving go”

The annoying thing about Python is the environment / package management. For such an easy-to-use language actually getting it set up when you’re inexperienced is a loving nightmare.

Once that’s done it’s good though, I was pleasantly surprised to find out it is used outside of academia and that I could earn a good living using it.

There are some pubs that are genuinely cornerstones of the community, the Irish pub that put on trade union events, let us host anarchist meetings in the back room, and helped people fill in benefits paperwork comes to mind, and the little local one made by a British Gas engineer who quit because the new management treated people like cunts and instead teamed up with a chem eng to solder together a whole brewery and make beer is cool too.

There are some that do genuinely have that level of attachment to people who have little else and a need for community, but yeah they're worth supporting for different reasons than 'every chain pub' or 'pretend hipster gin palace'.

However for anything past 1995, it's just too complex to handle entirely, compared to the benefits of C++. Just the automatic handling of vtables and stuff allows a level of abstraction that makes writing complex stuff so much easier. With todays processors (and graphic sizes), the CPU grunt work is usually much less of a bottleneck than reading/writing data, which is why motherboard and RAM speeds make the biggest difference. The few places where the CPU has to do very heavy lifting, you can usually get most of the perf gains with some tortuously complex C (including gotos!) that lays things out in a different way for the compiler to then build the more optimal output from. Less readable but more efficient, and it takes time to do properly*, so this is only in the last weeks during crunch when people are swearing about why the Switch version stutters when you go through doors or some such poo poo, and probably affects 1or 2 files out of 300,000.

Pubs are dying because young people don't go to them because drinking in a pub is a lot more expensive than it used to be, young people are - relatively - poorer then they used to be in terms of salary, and the rental market is a tax that disproportionately targets the young so they're less likely to stay in the same place long enough to get attached to a 'local' (if they can afford to go to the pub regularly with their meagre take-home pay).

So yeah, campaigns run by middle-class hacks and crackheads like 50p Lee are virtue-signalling in the purest way possible.

At least in Glasgow there's a local/central dynamic for pubs for young people. If you go to a pub in town on a Friday or Saturday night in Glasgow you'll find them packed to the gills with working age adults from 18-60. Some skew younger, some older, but there' plenty of people under 30 in them. The places that are dying are locals, because if your friends are scattered all over Glasgow because you have to take what you can get in terms of a rental, why the hell are you going to meet up in the pub that happens to be closer to one or two of you while being a trek across the city to reach for everyone else. if it's not an old man pub, it's a wetherspoons, purpose built to be somewhere you can meet your gran in for lunch and otherwise devoid of any culture or charm.

I think the deepest irony is that the thing that could actually save these places is the 15 minute city. If you live in walking distance of your work, your local is where you'll go for drinks. It's a place you could stop in at on your walk home. But no, they want us driving to offices, and driving home, and what reason is there to stop at the pub when you need to drive home? It's not like you can stop in for a drink.

100% agree. Having experienced what it's like from the other side, they are shite to perform on too. There was always zero intimacy, the sound was nearly always poo poo (at least in the pre wireless IEM days), and everything was so rushed by the organisers. The trick was to pretend you were having a good time and pretending you could hear a note of what you were playing. The best gigs at festivals could be found around campfires in the early hours.

Not a Blur fan but if I'm at a festival even if I'm not off my tits I'm still singing along with that because its all part of the fun. Americans are just poo poo at being crowds. Its why theres so many reaction videos to English football chants, they're stunned by the creativity of a group of people putting together a simple but entertaining rhyme about another team to the tune of Sloop John B. They just can't process it. I remember when WWE did their show in Wales a couple of years ago and loads of Americans were stunned that the crowd sang Edge's theme. They didn't realise they were allowed to do that.
