Things that got shittier for no good reason: You can no longer find technology reviews in writing, because everyone for no reason started posting video reviews instead. Probably because it's harder to block their ads that way? I'm sure there's some way in which there's money in it, despite production costs being higher than for written text.

There are too many bad product reviewers that flood google's search engines.
And people pay to have their bad products review well, so the same thing keep popping up.
The reviews are so bad that it doesn't even seem like a person touched the product.

The good product reviewers get squeezed out because it is less profitable to make written reviews.

Take 1 tablet by mouth daily.
Someone should make a website where you put in a YouTube link and it spits out a transcript in plain text.

I generally don't suggest going to Reddit, but for getting reviews on consumer goods it's absolutely worth adding that to your search string. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than sitting through 15 minutes of sponsored Youtube content, or sifting through the hundreds of AI written reviews that are utterly meaningless.

Open a youtube video, open the description, scroll down, click "show transcript."

Ok it's not plain text I guess, but it at least exists somewhat for most videos.

My parents tried to have me hook up their sound system and we wanted to make it so that we could have it so that things went to the sound outside but amps these days being designed to stop splitting and encrypted audio streams and all that made it near impossible and all this digital lockdown of audio just making it impossible to have a slightly custom sound system without spending a billion dollars made me so angry. It's blatantly these days more about wanting to lock you into buying all compatible systems since nobody is going to be pirating things like this.

In the end I could've maybe done something with the final speaker outputs but then I would've needed more knowledge about electrical engineering and mechanics of amplification and resistances and some secondary amplifiers and I kinda just gave up.

What kind of poo poo are you using? Schiit for one still makes dumb power amps in the three figure range and I am sure there are others too.

Have you seen how hard the SEO poo poo has latched onto that? Last time I did that the reddit thread was the third result.

Things that suck that isn't tech
-- summers have gotten humid, hot, and mosquito filled. I never see any dragonflies or fireflies or butterflies or any of the cool bugs. Just mosquitos, flies, fruit flies, and ants.

-- because of a crap ton of construction and essentially no shits given to air quality or waste there is a smog that blackens your snot in the Kleenex.

-- so many cereals cut back on oat flower and been throwing more cornflour in their recipes. I like having cereal instead of a desert wje. I am having a sweet craving.

Yeah I can't really blame the kids. Companies like Apple have made their products like bumper bowling and cut off access to the nuts and bolts of everything. If something goes wrong you have to take it to them to fix it.

The enshitification of tech might even have a long term effect on critical thinking and problem solving skills.

It is amusing that any search algorithm allows (not the specifically searched well-known site) to rank above (the specifically searched well-known site) regardless of SEO, unless they're directly paying for the top spot.

found this article mildly interesting. Google's algorithm was updated to actually try and rank useful reviews higher, based on actually testing the product.

so the content mills (little known brands like Better Home & Garden and Popular Science) overnight started mentioning they'd tested 67 air purifiers hands on at their "labs" but then they just list the same copy paste list of lovely air purifiers they get the most affiliate money for.

thats fair i guess i was considering a relatively brief period in their history when search was actually good at finding information and fostered the mainstreaming of the internet as a result ... for a few years, before the inherent forces of capitalism really set in

(you could also argue - successfully - that was only possible due to the mainstreaming that came first)

Google wasn’t even good in terms of accuracy it was easy to use, looked nice and had no or minor ads (lol)
