I don't think that the yoofs are ruining music or that there isn't any good new music around these days - I discover good new music basically every week through Spotify... but the above is true and makes me sad. Apparently people (or at least, young people) don't really listen to Albums anymore, just individual tracks.

Some albums, when listened to *as an album* are transcendental.

My britpop story: I've no idea how the music industry works these days, but before the internet took over, A&R managers held the key to whether a band made it or not. A band I was briefly part of in 93-94 was being wined and dined by A&R tapeworms from Sony/Edel, and it just felt so loving toxic. I ended up bailing after a crazy A&R bash in London when the illusions just shattered for me.

The band did eventually sign a 5 album deal, or rather the egotistical lead singer signed the contract under his name and regarded the other musicians as session musicians. So they were purchased a load of new instruments and given a list of sound engineers, studios and other staff to choose from, and £100,000 was ploughed into their first album.

It was unbelievably poo poo. It was purposefully mixed badly, had terrible cover art and had no TV, magazine or radio promotions. To fulfil the record company's contract, ONE COPY of the CD was sent to each of the major record stores. Needless to say it didn't chart... lol

The other 4 members of the band got to keep their instruments and walk away, but the lead singer still had another 4 albums to produce before he was free of his contract. Not only that, but he was also personally liable for £100k+ of growing debt to the record company. Every demo tape he submitted was binned on sight, and they simply stopped picking up the phone to him. He could no longer perform using his own name, and could not sign another record deal or produce another album until the other 4 albums in his contract had been fulfilled.

Lots of bands used to get signed up to these 'kiss of death' contracts which were used as tax write-offs. While the band had the illusion of control, every studio/engineer/producer/etc on the lists they were given were part of the same parent company.

e: lol, I found the cover

Smart casual is one step up in smartness from casual.

For men:
Jeans> Chinos or smart khakis, cuords etc.
T-shirt with print on > T-shirt with solid colours or stripes or something smarter looking, or a polo shirt, or a button shirt without tie, probably untucked and possibly short-sleeve. I think if you're wearing a T-shirt you might also need a blazer over the top to make it smarter. Could also wear a sweater of some kind, or a cardigan?
Trainers> Something smarter than trainers: slip-ons with a leather(ish) upper, deck/boat shoes, etc., smart sneakers.

For women:
I have no idea. I guess a similar sort of thing you'd be expected to wear in a moderately smart office, but not like, a business suit. No jeans or trainers or printed T-shirts probably still applies.

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
I'm finding 'new' (to me) music all over the place :)
The youtube algorithm is giving me some excellent suggestions of late.

I absolutely love this one - it's real "happy music" (if you ignore the Red Army is performing it) - and I'm a bit partial to bass-baritone (Leonid Kharitonov who sings this, Paul Robeson who I've listened to for years).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3scgW-aghr4

Then I'm as likely to listen to this and stuff like it (actually yesterday evening, I listened to a whole load of this type of stuff blue-grass as it suited my mood).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCEHQ_nhxOA

Or this - and apart from being excellent (new) prog metal I like the age range of the musicians in this group:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ie77apU0RA

(I had a listen to the 100 Gecs - not for me. Not because I'm an oldie, just because not my kinda thang - do da kidz say that kind of thing still?)

Oh and this one I discovered this fantastic metalcore band a few years ago when a friend took his own life:

The cumulative fashion and cultural impact of all of them combined is less than the influence Avril Lavigne had. If you want to argue for UK music having a legit cultural impact it's drill from the cities and the post-covid folk festivals revival.

Giant is one of the songs that defines my conception of my own life, I love it, but pretending Calvin Harris/Rag 'n Bone has some wider cultural significance is just silly. There was a time when UK music conquered the world, it was when the rhyming slang for going on the dole was "on the rock and roll", our welfare state and the access to technology created a moment in time when meaningful art could be created and more importantly heard, but that moment is ended.

Fun fact: I deliberately didn't mention our lad Ed Sheeran because he was, technically, already mentioned, as he was the guitar tech for Nizlopi of the JCP song fame, but also was gonna bring him up because of the Bring Me the Horizon connection.

As for Adele... she's loving Adele, need I say more? Although I will admit that powerful as her original rendition was, my emo heart still loves

Take up your rifles
I used to have quite wide ranging musical tastes but Spotify somehow decided the only new music I'll like is psychedelic folk so that's all it suggests to me now, just an endless parade of men and women with guitars and fiddles singing songs about what it's like to be a mosquito or an irish pirate queen or whatever. So now I'm way off the pulse of new music because what loving normie has ever heard of Fish In a Birdcage.

I mean, I guess it's not wrong, it's generally done a good job (if we don't count the time it tried to force me to like The Mountain Goats).
