I hadn't seen it mentioned, but I found the answer to the intent stares. It turns out that, in a lot of 4H type competitions, you have to maintain some form of eye contact with the judges (because you're part of the livestock presentation). The previous year of this competition, one kid was docked points for not maintaining enough eye contact. Everybody thought the call was bullshit. So this year, in a form of malicious compliance, they decided to stare directly into the judges souls.

when looking up the staring thing, I also found out that in the rules, a judge may or may not drop shavings on your pig and you have to notice it and brush it off. Which is wild that there's a special capricious fae judge that exists to sometimes dole out old-timey folk tale inconveniences to make sure your head is on a swivel.

I may be a rural hick, but I love farm shows. Like every kind of them. Go to the fair, eat some junk, have a few pops, go watch the oxen pull and the pig prantz. It's an awesome Saturday.
