IIRC family court cases are 50:50 where both parents actually bother to show up, but a depressing amount of time the dads just don't.

In hindsight, it's amazing that the party apparatus opted for him. When Sturgeon resigned I assumed it would be Angus Robertson or Keith Brown effortlessly stepping into the job. Instead they cleared the road for Yousaf, who underperformed in the leadership election against a bible bashing terf running the worst campaign ever (albeit, with the overwhelming support of the Scottish press).

Now some of what's happened, like the Sturgeon stuff, has been totally out of his control. But he's clearly shown, either through incompetence or bad advice, that he's not up for the job. I'm expecting a resignation probably tomorrow unless one of the major parties does a U-turn. You simply can't run a a government against a hostile parliament by relying on the support of this person:

Toilet Rascal
Mermaids have published a a response to the Cass Review clarifying which parts have been gleefully misinterpreted by the press and which parts are actually poo poo.

Misinterpreted:

quote:

The Cass Review does not, as has been misrepresented in the press, recommend a blanket ban on social transition for any age group, and specifically recognises the rights and agency of young people to present how they choose. Dr Cass calls for early access to support for young children and their families so that they can be supported around decisions relating to social transition.

quote:

The report acknowledges the efficacy of puberty delaying treatment for some trans young people, while arguing that the evidence base is insufficient. The report also recognises that most young people receiving puberty suppressing treatment on the NHS aren’t doing so until it is too late for them to be effective (an average age of 15) as a result of long waiting lists and significant barriers to accessing care.

quote:

Young people have told us that they are worried by suggestions in the media that Cass has recommended a block on transition until 25, particularly for neurodivergent young people.

The report recognises that there are huge gaps in support for young people due to long adult waiting lists and the end of youth services at 18.

Actually poo poo:

quote:

We have significant concerns about mandatory participation in research as a condition of access to treatment, and the way in which this area of gender care has been politicised far more than any other.

quote:

The review makes unclear recommendations about private and overseas care which may have implications for those using these services, both in their ability to access this care, and potentially accessing NHS services in the future.

quote:

We are also concerned that the report implies that neurodivergent young people who are autistic are less trustworthy in articulating their trans identity than their neurotypical counterparts or that this capacity is limited until their “early 20s”.

Overall:

quote:

We are deeply frustrated with the lack of clarity throughout the report, which has enabled wilful misinterpretation and the spread of harmful misinformation. Clear and accessible language is vital, especially when services are operating in a context where there is significant hostility to and misconceptions about trans people, particularly in the media.

All in all a bad report, but also most of the things the usual suspects are saying about it are lies.

My cynical take is that the Greens have been polling too well in Scotland and the SNP see them as a threat in the General Election (whenever that is). Not winning seats but splitting the vote enough that they will damage SNP chances. There was also the possibility of the Greens pulling out first, so at least by this move Yousaf can appear like it was his idea and not forced upon him.

This has the added benefit of pleasing the loons who might vote Alba, and maybe stymie some of those voters slipping away too.

And riding the tiger of right wing maniacs always works, and is a good idea for sensible briefcase technocrats.

Also gg pissing off the one bloc in Holyrood that is not psychotically hostile to the SNP, well played lads.

He was never a very competent politician when he was a cabinet minister. He fumbled both roles and seemed to have a habit of not making friends. He's not dissimilar to Sunak I suppose - a glorified accountant to some degree.

Yeah, it doesn't solve every problem but an improved service from Inverness to the central belt is at least a start. It gets goods off the A9 & onto the rails too.

All the chat of dualling the A9 is just pure head-in-the-sand shite. Yes, what we really want is to encourage more people to drive. Going off this from the Scottish Government, for 2021 net greenhouse emissions were 41.6 MtCO2e*. The single largest category of is Transport, accounting for 10.9 MtCO2e, with cars counting for almost half that while railways count for just 0.1 MtCO2e.

Build railways.
